6 TllM OMAFIA DAILY IWR : AIMW , 17. 1811. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Opened Weak and Ol&wl fltroug pith * fractional Qniu. CORN WAS FIRM AFTER A WEAK OPENING I-nrgo Kccpli > tf uml I'lna Wenllicr Sufllclon to C'ntise Heavy Keeling In the Out * .Market I'rcivltlont and OlltC/VaO , April lO. Whtat openid weal and closed strong today , with a gain of ' /i for JIay. Favorable crop reports caused th early weakness and reports of crop damag the later strength. A liberal dccrcaeo It the visible supply nlso aided In the recovery Corn was firm and gained tic. Provision were very strong nnJ closed at the top of a 108 advance In pork. Wheat got a weak start from the bcarlsl nature'of the early news. Foreign advice were to the effect that showers prevailed It IJngland and a private dispatch from Strut * burs , Ofirmany , sahl that heavy rains wen Kentral there and that crop prospects , whlcl before were good , Mill remained BO. Itnln had fallen In Kansas , ninl of all the planku li the dry weather platform of the recent shor bull campaign the drouth In California alone remained. Kvcn that was Jumped upon this morning , a dispatch from New York , re reived here about thu opening , reporting rail In northern California. The amount of whca on passage had Increased 012,000 bu. am India appeared to have shipped more liberal ) ; than of late , llecrbohm's cables gives 320,000 lii. as India's contribution to the quantity afloat. The receipts In the northwest wen ngaln liberal. All these matters put together caused a decline In price here of Ic per bu In twenty minutes , compared with Saturday's closing. The business done during the dc ellne was not very tic-ivy , and after the de cline trading became quite slack , but wltl Indications of returning confidence ainoiif , holders. May opened with sellers at G3c , as against COUc. al the close on Saturday. In the next two seconda there was aomo busi ness done al G9'ic , followed by a rally to BO-lic , ami then by a decline to GOiic. . July , which closed on Saturday wortli only from lc to 1'ric more than May , Improved to a premium of from ITic to L'o In the first hour. The sentiment of the crowd underwent a complete change on account of the con siderable decrease In the visible supply , and an advance to from C0c to COUc for May and CHfcc for July was the work of a very few minutes. There was a reaction In May to fi9c , but sellers did not offer much. Closing cables came weak and caused an other spell of comparative heaviness here. May dropping again to C99ic. After the V c decline which follovci the report of the weak closing cables there were some more harrowing drouth dispatches from California , which started the crowd to buying again , and the market went higher than before and closed at CO' ' c for May. The corn market was strong , after a mo mentary ( It of weakness at the opening. There was no change of moment In pre viously existing conditions to account for the strength unless the greater buying disposi tion of foreign houses In New York could bo accepted as warranting more firmness here. Tlio visible supply decrease , 1,400,000 bu. , and the publication of that fact , was the cause of some strength In the middle of the session. The business was not heavy. May opened at 38-4c , as against 38',6c ' on Satur day. It Immediately began to improve , and reached 38e. The market was at Us best ns business was coming to an end for the day , and JIay closed at 38in and July at 38c , or Vic higher than Saturday. Large receipts and the fine weather suf ficed to cause a heavy feeling In the oats market. Opening values were at from Ic to Vic under Saturday's last quotations , but at noon had gained Vic over the opening quotation. The market showed a still more steady feeling at the close , and prices re acted where they did"on Saturday. Provisions opened with a bounce of from 15c to 20c over Saturday's closing rates for pork , from 7V c to lOc over that day's final prices for lard , and from Be to lOc higher for ribs. That was only the beginning of a very strong market , which remained of that complexion to the close. The strongest phase of the market was prevailing as It closed , with everything at the top of the day's range. Pork closed for May at $13.30 and for July at $13.40 , being a net gain of 60c per bbl. Lard for May gained 32V2C , and May ribs closed 22Vic higher. The feature of the share speculation at the opening of huslncsa was Sugar , and this stock monopolized the dealings up to noon , the rest of the list being stagnant. The stock was bought by the gatno brokers who manipulated the deal on Saturday , and presumably for the same clique. IluyltiK was quite brisk , nnd within less than three quarters of an hour an ad vance of 2V4 per cent had been established. As usual , the probability of a change in the tariff bill more favorable to the refiners was claimed to be the motive for the Improve ment , but It Is not unlikely that better pros pects had n good deal to do with the ad vance , Before 11 o'clock the purchasing movement hail lost Its force , ami the price began to eag off gradually , the last sale being made at a figure li per cent below the highest point touched , leaving only a caln of % per cent on the tluy. After inM- day Chicago Gas jumped Into prominence , and an advance of 3 % per cent was quickly made , but in the subsequent dealings 1 > ,4 per cent of the Improvement was lost , the closing price being 1 4 per cent better than the last sale mailu on Saturday. The general - oral market was very dull , and the shares which are usually active fluctuated within narrow limit ; . St. 1'iuil was sold by London and the local traders , declining 2Ti per cent , and closing at the lowest point touched. The other grangers were weak. In sympathy , llurllngton making a loss of % per cent. Northwestern V < per cent , and Hock Island } i per cent. At the close the tone of spec ulation was heavy , and compared with Saturday's closing prices were Irregular. The railway and miscellaneous bond market was active , but rather weak all day , al though Bomo shares recorded gains. The week opens out with a very respect able run of Block for n Monday. Thcro were nearly 3,000 fresh cattle on mile and the supply , as usual ot late , was matlc up very largely of boot stners , although th > yo was a very fair sprinkling of hay fetl west- eriiH , which weld largely no rccdorc. All clas.'OH of IniyptB were on hntitl early after suplles , and dealers lost little tlmn in getting down to huslnesH. The bullish , oven excited , tone to pastern advices gave seller.i courage , and they were not at all modest In the prices they asked for their holdings. Hiiycrs were very anxloim for the cattle , however , and where weight and quality suited they did not hesitate to pay a lOc to 16o advance over Saturdays prlccn. The good light and medium weight cattle were particularly nought nfter. hut It was not hard to Hell any kind of useful cattle today. Dressed hoof men wore good , altlve buyers , and them was an improved Inquiry for ox- porters. Business was brisk from the start and soon over , the marKet. closing up strong at the advance. Tlio strength and activity of thu fat cattle market was In a great measure reflected In the cow trade. Offerings were compara tively meager , and buyers soon had the twenty odd loads gathered In nt prices strong to Do and lOc higher than the close of last week. There was not an oversupply of calves on the market and prices were firmly held on all mutable offerings. Rough stock ot all kinds sold freely at good , strong prices. The trade In stockers and feeders was good as far as It went. The demand , however - over , exceeded tlio supply considerably , and as a result prices ruled sharply higher on suitable offerings. It Is pretty common stuff that has to sell under $ : ! now , and the better grades are selling readily nt up around $3.75. Representative sales ; DRESSED J1EEF. 2..1930 285 . . . .
