6 THE OMAHA DAILY BEEi'tyflUlWOAY , MARCH a 180k COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL General Speculation More Active than for Many Months- ALL OF THE CEREALS PARTICIPATED \Vlicnt Opened I.'imlrr nnil Slicnvnl No Symptom * of hlrciiRtli for an Hour , Tlien It Stiffened unit Koto to Slufy Ontg. CHICAGO , Mnrch 7. There wns moro sen- ernl speculntlvo activity on 'chnngo today than has been seen for months. Wheat corn , oalB nnd provisions all participated In tlio revival of trad a and each of I hem made money for thulr respective holders Wheat ID up Vic , corn % c , oats nearly Ic nnd pork 20c. Oats started tlio ball , which doctrinal the corn and wheat pits when they found themselves being wagged by their usually liumblo follower. Wheat opened cniilcr at 535Jc for May , us against fiO' c nt the close of tradB yes terday. It showed no symptoms ol Rtrcngth , however , for about an hour , but nt the end of that tlmo It began to itllTcn up nnd rose to COo. The weaker feeling nt the start wns due to the mildness nf the wc.ithor , which over the winter whc.it urea wns several degrees warmer than on the day before , but receipts here wcro only 75 cars , compared with ICO the same day n year ngo , nnd It wns pointed out that / . < ro weather wns not possible. The chnngo from the opening weakness to the strength Indicated by the recovery from GO ic , the lowont point of the early decline , to t > 0c was , to some extent , duo to the pronounced firmness nt Minneapolis nnd Ditluth. Minneapolis wired that receipts were likely to fall off materially there before long , although U Is dinicult to nee , with the premium which cash wheat demands lhara , that any falling off Is probable so long as there are stored Btocku In the Interior clcvatora .vhlcli can bo coaxed to the front. Some of the strength In the market was llkowlso due , It was Bald , to the preparations of the bhorta to encounter what they expect will bo n very bullish report from Washington on Saturday regarding. tlo ( stocks of wheat on the farms. The very bullish feeling In corn nnd oats also contributed toward Inspiring the wheat shorts with a. dcslro for icllef from their outstanding contracts. The clos ing cables came In firm , prices showing from 3Bc to 2iic advance In ( lour , nnd lierlln a % mark gain In wheat. Seaboard cltnr- nnces were comparatively light , amounting to only about 170,000 bu. In wheat and flour from the four principal Atlantic ports. The price , after reaching C0c , had several fluctuations between GOVic nnd GO o nnd the higher figures , with generally rapid ral lies from each slight break. The n'urket wns nctlvo and firm toward the end , clos ing at from GOlfcc to G0c. In corn there was pretty good bidding by Bomo of the largo concerns , whllo the offerIngs - Ings were moderate all day. The strength wns duo largely to the prospective smaller movement , advices from the interior Indi cating lighter offerings'nt country stations , and also to the active demand for cash , which Is In urgent request at higher prices. Local room traders sold curly , but bought back on the advance , which caused prices to advance sharply. Today's arrivals were small 273 cars and tomorrow's estimate Is placed nt 235 oars. The market bulged qulto rapidly on the announcement of the light arrivals for tomorrow. The market opened with n fractional loss and sold down Bllghtly when the demand Improved , shorts hastening to cover , and prices were ad vanced % c , receded V4c , ruled firmer , and closed with from % c toc gain. There was an nctlvo trade and very strong market In oats. Shorts bought liberally , and thcro was aho good general buying , which absorbed offerings readily. The strength In the cash market and the active demand thcro had much to do with causing prices to advance from % c to % c and close nt nbout the top figures , with n net gain of from % c to % c. The feature In the cash trade was the sale of a round lot of 100.000 bu. No. 2 In store at ' , ie under May. Receipts wore small , with no Increase expected to morrow. Provisions opened flrm on a lighter run ot hogs at the yafds than expected and an advance In prices. Free covering by the ehorts , nnd particularly In pork and lard , nnd the strength developed In wheat sent the market tip with but slight reactions , a Kood advance being scored. The paclcorn and commission houses wcro the principal buyers. A good volume of business was transacted , except that ribs were completely neglected. The market --later became com paratively qulot. A little realizing sent prices down to a limited extent , but they speedily reacted on moderate buying and then fell slightly , the market closing flrm for pork and easy for lard and ribs. Estimated receipts for tomorrow ; Wheat , CO cars ; corn , 235 cars ; oats , 120 cars ; hogs , 25,000 head. The leading futures ranged as follows ; Artlcicil | Open. | Higli | Low. I Close. Wheat. Ono I'alluro on 'CluniKe Follows the Deal In Sugur. NBW YORK , Mnrth 7. The announce ment of the suspension on the Stock exchange ot tbe firm of Hunter , Clark & Jacobs , made shortly before the close of business , was somewhat of a surprise , as It wns not known o bo Involved In any operations on the wrong side of the market. As the sequel proves , ho firm was Involved by Mr. Clark , one of tu members , who signed the firm's nnino tea a number ot fifteen-day privileges In Sugar nt SI , pocketing the proceeds of his sale of irlvIlcKcs nnd then , when the market umped up on him , leaving the llrm , which ; new nothing of his operations , to redeem his paper. After paying out some ? SO,000 ho firm made an assignment , not knowing low many moro privileges wore outstanding. lad Clark's little speculation been EUCCCSS- ul his operatlona would never have come to Ight , but with a 12 per cent loss lu Night hero was nothing left for him but to con- ess or run. Nothing Is known of his where abouts , and , us the llrm refuses to make any statement regarding Its affairs before tomor- ow , Its liabilities cannot bo ascertained bo- ere then. That this should have been the only casualty of the Sugar squeeze Is a mut er of congratulation to the street , but Inas much as It has developed a now method of railing for private profit on the .credit of ha flrm , there Is a dark side to the picture. Today's share speculation was In marked contrast to the excited trading of yesterday. V strong tone pervaded the market and al- hough thcro were frequent , and , In the case of Sugar , wide fluctuations , the net result of ho trading was the establishment of a ilgher range of values throughout the ntlro active list in a majority ot the specialties , vlillo the few declines recorded were In the mailer fractions. Sugar was feverish In the arly dealings. Iluying orders were on the loard at tlio opening , which moved the quo- atlon up rapidly , the advance , however , icing EOCII checked by Bales to realize profits , vhlch caused a reaction. The shorts of yes- crdr.y began to buy at the lower figures and he stock responded quickly to these pur- liases , touching 95i , & , Just C per cent above ast night's closing. This was the top figure f the day , from which a break ot 2V4 per cut was subsequently made. In the later callnga the quotations wcro moved back 1U per cent , with a recovery of yt per cent , and a final reaction.ot Vi per cent , leaving a gain n the day ot 3 % per cent , The Evening 1'ost says ; Today's etiarp re covery In silver bullion Is the moro remark- nblo from the fart tnftt It accompanies talk of the most positive , kind regarding the 5 per cent Indian Import tax on Oliver , lly Way qf nddcd perplexity , the council offers within the last week ot 21,600,000 rupees a sum not approached In recent months have been freely taken and the ruling prlco today Is higher than ft was n fortnight since. This Is undoubtedlya'favorable sign , because the real embarrassment of the Indian gov ernment had as bad nn Influence In London as our treasury's recdht troubles had In this country. Moreover , In so Inr ns the Indian council finds It possible to sell Its own ex change , to precisely ( hat extent the boards ot the "presidencies" will bo released to eano the Indian money market. The same In fluences which arc likely before long to od- vance the price ot all commodities will equally act on silver. Yet It Is clear that continued Increase In American shipments must weigh down the London sliver market , moro especially It an Indian Import duty were to check the casern demand. fho following are the closing quotations on .no loading stocks ot the Now York exchange lodny ; Atchlson Northern Pacific Adanm KxprcHs. . . lee No. P.ic. pfd Alton , T. There were moro fresh cnttlo on sale today than wore -hero on any one day last week , but the reports from Chicago wcro rather encouraging nnd the trndo was In very fair shnpo nevertheless. There were n few bunches of very good heavy beeves , but for the most part supplies were made up of n very common lot of cnttle. Shippers were good buyers of the heavier grades and nt prices strong to Go nml lOc higher than Tuesday , good to choice 1,200 to 1'IOO-lb. beeves selling readily at from $3.50 to $1. The fair to gooei stuff nnd the Inferior grades , having no outsldo competition , did not sell n grent deal better , but cold more freely. It was n good , nctlvo , healthy market through out nnd buyers 'soon effected n gooJ clearance. Cows and mixed stock were not in ovcr- suimlv nnd for that reason sellers ex perienced no difficulty In realizing fully steady prices for their holdings. There wcro not over thirty loads on nalo all told nnd they soon changed hands.
