THE OMAHA DAILY DEE ; SUNDAY , JANUARY 14. 189-i-SIXTEEX PAGES. CONDITION OF OMAHA TRADE r Business Still Held in the Doldrums of Post- Holiday Dullness , ONLY CHANGE NOTICED IS FOR THE BETTER traveling Men Are Out Again unit Are Meeting with I'rtlr > Hccr , Though Merchant * Are Ituyinc for Inline * dliito Coimumptlon. Dunn ? the month immediately following the holidays the weekly review of business conditions and prospects Is largely a repeti tion. Tlio stagnation which Is common to all lines of trade at this season admits of but lltilo comment and Is accepted by business men as a dose of medicine which they must take once n year. Some of them may bo In clined to make wry /aces , but ns a rule they rejrard the situation philosophically and build tbclr hopes upon the future. While the last week has brought but little ihanRC In local business txmdllians , that lit tle has been on the rlelitsldcof the ledger , ind Is accepted as an Indication that the iltuatiou is not so bad after all. Rome mcr- thants complain that business is not what U should be , out there was never a season to prosperous that the saino wail was not tudible. The preat majority of the jobbers ind merchants report that they arc doing til and in many cases more than they had any right to expect in such a year us the present. Traveling Men Out. The last vreelc has practically chronicled the beginning of the business of the year ivtth the Jobbing trade. The traveling men have been called In during the holidays , and It is only recently that they have gene bacK on the road. Most of them arc now out nnd the remainder will follow within the ucrt few days. The men who are out have re ported'a fair business in all line ? . Orders uro not as large as usual , as very few dealers are buying slock for future delivery. IJusI- ness Is conducted on the conservative basis taught by the past six months of adversity. \Vtiilo single orders do not loom up to the usual expectation , the volume of trade Is steady , and in the end it is exacted to ag gregate a considerable per cent more than was anticipated. Some of the flrms have sent men out to new territory during the week with gratify- inir results. A local dry goods house re- reived a lone list of orders from Colorado tnd cither points in the southwest , and the Iowa men who have gone out have met with lair success. Money is still hard to get and many customers are asking for time. Most Df these , however , nro paying their ac- : ounts in part and jobbers generally profess to be well satlstied with their collections. Jtctall TrmJp Oillft. The retail trade Is quiet and most people ire only buying what they actually need , ( n dry goods some of the incrchauts have jfTercd special Inducements to clear up their heavy goods and report a satisfactory busi ness. The clothing trade is not what it was U this time las : year , but 1S93 was an ex- teptlonally good year ana dealers are not complaining. While some improvement has been notice able during the week in general trade no very marked chance is looked for until the " ipring lines are on"the markot. The spring trade is what the majority of the jobbers are pinning their hopes on. The fact trial coun try merchants are only ordering what goods they need and can pay for encourages the Idea that the spring sales will be unusually heavy for the times , as stocks will run very low and require general replenishing. AS .v iis it. nutlneim 1'ronpcttn Not nattering Enter prise * ' Ilelni ; luahd. W. H. Robot-son , manager of H. G. Dun & Co.'a mercantile agency , speaking of tlio trade situation iays : . "Thcre.has'becn almost no life in tbo Job bing trade during the week , and retail dealers , outside two or three largo estab lishments , are complaining. Collections keep up very well and money is abundant enough at banks , with very llttlo demand for It from the best Hss of borrowers. Country banks are calling for some money. Tbo stagnation of busi ness generally is commented utxm on all sid s because many shrewd people predicted easier conditions by this time. The fact is prospects arc not good for any Immediate recovery. "Locally , interest centers now in the union depot enterprise , and it is probable a proposition .for bonds will shortly be sub mitted to the people , as the tfrst definite itcp toward realizing the passenger station it the foot of Farnam street. Everybody agrees that the location 1s the best thr.t could bo found and most of our citizens would probably favor a reasonable bonus , though these are not good times for asking people to go into debt. "Tho beet sugar enterprise is making headway , and the Commercial club is reachIng - Ing Its strong right hand out to grasp soma other undertakings which mom a good deal for Omaha. If there is a revival pf business and a recovery from the present want of confidence in the future , this city will see better times as soon as the spring is fairly open. "Tho sufferlne poor of Omaha are being fairly well care. ? . 'or by the various char- Hublo organizations and the churches. That many worthy men are drifting about really anxious for work was demonstrated by Hev. Mr. Clark ono cold day last week. He obtained authority to employ flfty me-n on the streets. Their remuneration was to bo thrco plain meals nnd a piace > > .o sleep on the Hoer in Kcst-uo hall. When Mr. Clark called for volunteers llfty-soven men stood up and fifty-two stepped up to bo pivcn employment and followed their benefactor to the streets , ivhcro they toiled hard for four hours , some pf them with bare hands and without over- Wats. The story of today's operations on the Stock exchange can bo told brlolly. The speculation was devoid of ani mation and the volume of business extremely .light even for Saturday. The improve ment in the London market for se curities , moro encouraging reports of trade prospects and the placing of tlio tariff ugtl income tux clauses of the ways and means committee bill into separate measures had the effect of glvlnp a strong tone to the opening dealings , causing an ad vance of from V to J < per cent. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Poor Export Damind and Free Selling Sent Wheat Down Again. THAT CEREAL START ED UNUSUALLY WEAK Under Henry t'rmmiro to .Sell It ItrgKn n Decline Mlilch Continued with I'evr Iteactluiit Tnrouchuut the Boston of the Day. CHICAGO. ' Jan. 13. The poor export de mand and free selling sent wheat down again today. May closed with a loss of % c ; May corn closed KC lower , May o.its % c lower and provisions finished with pork slishtly higher and lard and ribs a little lower. Wheat started weak with May tfc lower at BiJ c and under heavy pres.num to sell begun a decline which continued with few reactions throughout the session. The weak ness was attributed to the smaller clearances , the exports of wheat and Hour from both coasts belngreporledabout'sOO.OOOuu. smaller than the preceding week. The receipts at primary markets were a little smaller than during the preceding week and opera tors looK for a small decrease in the visible supply , estimated at from 800.000 to 500.000 bu. Cables were not encouraging. Export clearings were small yesterday and agere- gatcd JMO.COO bu. The speculative offerines were fairly largo and exceeded the demand. Domestic markets were quiet and easier. Swarti-bupee Baldwin- Kennett-Hopkins , - , t'arnutn nnd other big traders sold per sistently , and May closed but Vc from the bottom ficurcs of the day. May opened at 05 * c , lost ' c , rallied Kc , lost Jtfc and rallied 'fcc to the close at tu c. Corn was moderately active at times with the feeling manifestly easy , and flishtly lower prices occurred. The action of wheat , together with sales by several prominent operators , were the principal factors in creating depression. The lack pf outside pcculativc interest was instrumental in bringing about the easier sentiment. Re ceipts were rather heavy , estimates for Monday's receipts were liberal , and May closed but c above the day's bottom figures. May opened at 33 * < , c , advanced ' c , lost ? gC and reacted ' 1,0 to the close at 3Sc. Pressure to sell caused a weaker feeling In the oats market. May opened " ( .c lower , at 30 ' 4c , and after advancing H'c on a little buying , declined ? ! , o and closed at the day's bottom figures , 3y9'e. The provision market opened active and lower on receipts of Ilvo hogs being 8,000 over the estimate and lower prices for them. On somewhat limited offer ings the feeling was steady , except that ribs were weak and comparatively lower than anything else. Pork , was more active than anything else , and , after scoring an ad vance over yesterday's timl figures , reacted to the opening figures of the day on support being withdrawn and the offerings a little more free , with lard and ribs rul ing steady. Subsequently a little bidding sent prices up again , the market ruling firm , finally reacting to a limited ex tent and closing steady. Compared with last night May pork is r > c higher , May lard lOc lower and Mav ribs 5c lower. Closing prices , however , are stil fully a nickel better than the close of last week. Conditions continue much the same as they have been so fai this winter. Aside from the usual qovcrn mcnt estimate the only attempt to ap proximate the future hoj ? supply is found it : the annual exhibit and estimate ol the Cincinnati Price Current. Il ts but fair to say that this estimate meets the views of the bit majority of those in the trade , although therei are notable exceptions , and amcnt ; Ibctn some of the shrewdest men in tlio busi ness. The Price Current's llgures as as fol lows : lie-turn1 ! and estimates show the total west ern parkins .slnco November 1 to bo 2,780.000 , RCalnst 3O3OMIO year HKO a decrease at date of 250,000 lies . The weeks total Is 325.000 , compared with 225,000 the prccedlnc week , and 290OOOfor the corresponding period last year. In n.vird to expectations for the remainder of tliesi' < u-on. St. Louis , Kansas t'lty and Omaha , und we. have necessarily been oullscd te > adopt licures In our calculations which seem insti lled by all the avallaulo evidence , rather than the acceptance of Individual statements for such ( Kilnts. H Is clearly the expectation of Uiotrade that the number of boss to bo marketed during January and 1'ehruury wlllqtsito decidedly ex ceed the total for corresponding months last vear. TliN finds support , from all sources. \Vlth tlio ev.-eptlons of > lu l\ City and I-ouls- villo all the prominent points count on a de cided pain over January uud February last year. A consolidation of estimates submitted from the minor points and figures accepted for the larscrc nter-i Indicates a tola ! of 4 , 050,000 hois for the winter season , uncling March 1. as the western packing. This compares with 4.633.OOO shown for last wlntor , und implies an Increase of something over 3UO.OOO hopsu apparently probable. Tor the remaining portion ot thu season last year the packing was 1.605.OOO hoss. and If the. totnl of 4,950- 000 bo reached this season It follows thai 2.170.OOO must 1)0 packed subsequent to thli date which would be a gain of OGo.UX ) over corresponding tlmo last year. On the b.isl.sof the estimate suggested , the packing for the remainder of the t.unson woulil average ) 310.000 hogs pe-r week , compared wltli last season'.s average of 230,000 for the corresponding spending period. \Vlillo recognizing the probabilities ol a considerably enhanced production ol provisions this winter , compare-el with last year. It Is propei to bear In mind the fact that the Indicated total falls short of any previous season In eighteen year * ; that notwithstanding the fact that the winter season has moro than hall passed away there l.-t far less than ordinarily of accumulations of product for tht tlmo of year , and also , with chancej favoring some gain In the spring months , there Is ground for the view that there will be no burdensome offerings ol hogs or of product for many months to come , and possibly at no time until late In the sum- incrKcaMui , If in factsiu-h conditions should develop before another year. Ills trues tbr.t the season has been ono of Inducuiuunt for enlarging the proeluctlon of swim- , and also that It has been more than ordinarily favora ble with reference to hualth of stock. lc.ir llud tlie Iteht of It. Rccfipts today were the heaviest in nearly a month , und the quality was in tlio main very good. Dealers are wondcriuK whether the predicted heavy markeitine df hogs has commenced or this is simply a spurt fol lowing tlio recent sharp advance in prices. Dealers were all prepared for a lower market texluy on account of the weakness in provisions at the close Friday- . Liberal receipts and lower markets east still further assisted the bears und the market opened all of lOo to 15c lower than Friday. There was a peed demand , bath from local houses and shippers , and trade started out brisk at the decline.
