Interest Is on the Increase as to tins result of the meeting of transcontinental lines now In 7 > repress at Chicago , the likelihood of an agreement growing beautifully less as the general passenger ngonts of the lines \n \ it ) ' tcrest come to understand the real Import of the Canadian Pacific's demands. Two dif- ferentiaU are nsked by the "Oanucl ; ' ' poo- pie , one from Victoria to San Francisco of flO flat , the other from New Whatcom to Seattle of f8 on first dlasp and fT > on second class , which they seek to apply to the whole transtntasouri territory. But the passenger nconts of the other liuus immediately put their foot down on The propositions submit ted , with the rer.ult that an agreement is seemingly farther off than ever. Unless something definite is decided upon It is learned , on what is considered rood authority , the Great Northern and Union Pacific will withdraw from the mooting and let the Canadian Pacific fight It out on lines previously drawn. As to the first jiroposltion there seems to be a feeling that the differential should be allowed , .as thoiwater haul from Victoria , British Columbia , to San Francisco is nearly TOO miles but -would "be suicidal to allow the differential asked for by way of the Shasta route with onl.a . water haul of somottinp like 100 miles , winch the gentle men now in Chicago contend cuts no figure in the matter whatever and should not be allowed. Mr. Hill is on record as having said he would flrht a diflerenthil if but a dollar , and Mr. Hill usually keeps his word , in which event the chances of agreement are few and far between. At least that is the consensus of opinion nmotic ' the passenger agents in Omaha Should'no agreement be reached the merriest rate war on Pacific coast busi ness will be inaugurated that the west has seen in years. ' Stniri'd nil Eutlrc Fall uro. CHICAGO , Jan. 10. [ Special Telegram to THE BEE. ] The conference of transconti nental lines in the Great Northern hotel adjourned sine die this evening without lirvinp reached any ncreemont. In other words the mooting which lasted an entire week was an entire failure. Not one pro posal advanced , as between the Canadian Pacific with Us See line connection on one side and the American lines on tne other , was accepted. All efforts at compromise by committees were failures , and the final adjournment was taken this evening after a protracted and stormy session. Everything in the confer ence hinged upon" the question of differentials demanded by the Canadian Pa- cihc from St. Paul to Kojth Pacific coast and California points From St Paul to "San Francisco Tia Victoria and steamer it asired. 10 first class and PlO second class , and would not recede Jrom this position. The other lines would cone-ode nothing hiclier than f2 first-class aud' ' ? . " > second-class differ ential via this route. jVia the Puget Sound and Shasta routes the American lines were uotwilling to allow jl he Canadian Pacific any differential. The meeting brace tip witn a good deal of bad feeling and it is now extromelv probable that the transcontinental passenger rate war will be resumed -with greater iury than ever. The Canadian . .Pacificwill - undoubtedly edly continue its policy of making differen tials -whatever rates the other lines may put In effect to "North Parific coast and Cali fornia points. At any rate the situation has uofbeon Improved byjhe protracted confer ence now ended. - - Traveling 7if enff r Actmts. " NEW OULEAXS , .Tan. 10.
