i ; i ! i ' l * THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SUNDAY , DECEMBER 17 , 1893-TWENTY PAGES. 15 CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE JBos.nws Situation Shows Very Little Otaaga During the Week. [ COLLECTIONS ARE STILL FAIRLY GOOD I Jobber * Report m Moderately Attire Week tn All I.tnM , Ilollilar Uoort * K p - dally In Demand Hunk Ulemr- Ine * for the Week. The local Jobbing trade ilocs not show r. ucu change as reuards general conditions. I As a matter of fact change * are- tatting [ p.ico t > .it so gradually as not to be readily I apparent as viewed from dny to day. In Iccrta.n branches of the Jobbing trade the IhouJa. , tcason has produced some iraprove- { mcnt and those Jobbers who nro hanollns [ any number of lines of holiday goods speak of traJc as very satisfactory during the ! week /jst closed. Those Jobbers who are [ hand.mg only the regular lines of goods that I nro not in special request at this season of Ltho year do not bavo so much to say lia favor of the condition of business. I Ihus the Jobbers of hardware and dry goods [ report only a moderate business for the past [ week. The procers had a good trade in such limes as candies , nuts , raalns , etc. Business l a the line of boots and shoes was fair , but [ hardly up to what It was for the previous r week. r It is , of course , admitted on every side I that general business is far from what could I be desired , but it is also a fact that , in the I plare of the utterly unsettled feeling which lexUtcdonly a month or two ago , there is I now n fairly well defined basis on which to I ouild up a new prosperity. It is true that in Isome lines considerable uncertainty exists las to the future , for the reason that the I proipect of n new tariff system stares the I country in the face. L That the business situation is actually 1m- I proving admits of no drtubt , in the minds of I those who have intimate dealings with I merchants and manufacturers. While the banks could wish for a very much better demand - [ mand for money from the mercantile com- fmunity than actually exists , there are , I nevertheless , plenty of indications that busi- Iness men are beginning to use more money lln their various lines of industry. The In- Iveatoi- authority for the statement that teastern banks have lately been gratified at [ finding' concerns to whom they are always iRiad to lend , but who have not been borrow- ling anything of them for a long while , com- ling round and askipg for largo amounts. [ This Indicates that business men are obtain- I ing an access of courage and ore beginning I to enlarge their lines slowly but surely. I While the situation has improved and Lwhile much of the feeling of distrust so f noticeable , not long ago , has disappeared / Omaha Jobbers expect to see , business remain - | main rather quiet the balance of the winter. 1 This expectation would appear to be based [ on the absence of any visible cause that I might bring about any very great revival In ' trade. The Retail Trtule. The retail trade of Omaha Just at the present time is receiving the benefits of the holiday season. All , or nearly all , of the larger retail houses of the city report a good business. It is noticed , however , that while the number of buyers is as large as usual their purchases are hardly as liberal as in former seasons. Cheaper or small articles are given the preference by the buyers of UhrUtmns gifts. The retail merchants , like the Jobbers , do not anticipate a very large trade after the holidays. Bank Clearlnca. The bank clearings of Omaha show a de crease during- the pasc week amountine to 20 per cent. This is a smaller decrease than is shown by the cities to the north and west of Omaha. The decrease at Minneapolis Is Id per cent , St. Paul 4C , Milwaukee 4S and Denver 4'J. The cities to the south , hovv ; ever , make a better showing this week than Omaha. St. Joseph's clearings have de creased only 3.U per cent , Kansas City 10 , and St. Louis 15. The following will show the clearings at Ouiaba for each day of the past week : Monday $1.104.271.00 Tiif diV 1.O34.787.94 V.cilnpvhiy 73G.06.VG5 Tlinrsday 823.0U.7G Fridiiy 77(1.809.33 Saturday 7Q4.700.99 Total J5,233e09.66 AS 1 > OX SKEb IT. Omnlm' l're rnt Condition a Sharp Warn- Inc to .Moneyed Men. Mr. "W. H. Roberson , manager of R. G. Dun & Co.'s Mercantile agency in Omaha , speaking of trade , says : "Trade is not active for the season.ithough it is good inmost , if not all , staple lines. The recovery is very slow. Hopeful merchants and financiers freely predict improvement after January , 131)4. Money is quite a little easier and Christmas trade is better than last week , though not up to one year ago. ' The county is assisting , -UX ) fami lies this winter and moro are askiuc aid. The cnaritable organizations are also being drawn upon fur considerable help. Tbo fact is that probably lbOO people in Omaha are very much In need of the necessaries of life and a great many others art ) obliged to call upon more thrifty relatives and friends for help to pull through what promises to be a hard winter. Never theless some of the steady wage earners are bankinira little every month , and everybody is economising. This makes it hard for retail dealers aud particularly those who tire selling luxuries. "This brings lo the front a thought which I regret to call lo public attention , it is the lathargy of our wealthiest und most in fluential cltiicns tn regard to public matters. Can it bo possible they do not know that business is very dull and honest people willing and anxious for employment nro un- nblo to Und it' Can It bo possible that they are indifferent lo the future of Omaha I It would appear cither that they are supremely selnsh OB hopeless. The Commercial club is an organization number ing over TUl members , and yet ono can count Ihe active workers on his ttngers , and it is the hardest kind of work to get out a re- Bpectablu gathering of business men to dis cuss even thu most important public topics. This is wrong. The millionaires , the property owners and the business men will kill tbo city if tney persist in this policy. The Commercial club costs in dividual members a trills. Its executive oftlfcrs are wide awake and the commis sioner Is a ( rood worker. They ought to have and must have , the support of the oomif unity or their efforts will full utterly. Tins city needs just such an organization , and the moneyed ir.cn of Omaha must wake up and uCi | > . The development of the soao manufactur ing Industry In this city hai created a largo demand for cocoinut oil Omaha manufac turers buy the oil from New York brokers , who have It shipped from the South Sea IMands , It comes from pipes made of teak wood that wclzh about 2.SX ) pounds each , filled. Some Idea ot tne value of the oil maybe bo gained from the fact that a carload costs over J2.000. and it requires a good manv cars each year to supply the Omaha f actonc * . A San Francisco company has recently com menced the manufacture of the oil. and on Friday the first car of American mnde oil to come to this city was received by the \V. A. Page Soap company. The oil hm every ap pearance of being superior to the imported , and If it ran be made to compete in price U will , no doubt , soon supplant the South Sea islands' product In this country. The finance committee of the manufac turers association has issued a circular let ter to members delinquent in dues , which was mailed out yesterday. The committee states that it chocked up the receipts and disbursements and found everything in good shape with the exception that a considerable number of the members ara behind in their duo. There was duo December 1 $941 , of this I3S1 was for December dues , leaving a balance of (017 due from previous monthi. Produce Pointer * . Ed Lytle of the firm of Rlddell k Lytle. was un to Ptanton during the early part of the week. He found quail quite plentiful , but the weather was too cold to make hunting very enjoyable. It Is no easv matter at the present time to ( ret apples to fill country orders. Western apples constitute about all the supply there is , but they are meeting with a good deal of favor at the hands of buyers. The Omaha Dreduce market has not been very active during the week Just closed. In fact a good many houses are complaining that business is positively dull As to the market , prices have not shown much change. Should the consumption of buttcrino con tinue to increase at the same rate that it has during the past year , butter will cease almost entirely to bo an article of commerce in this market before very lone. The butterme sells to the consumer at about the same orico as country butter , but tbo retail merchant makes a much greater prolt in handling the butterine , so * that it is to his interest to push the sale of the latter. THAT CEREAL ADVANCED , HOWEVER Selling ; Orders from Xetr Tork Were Light nnd the Kxpnrteil Cold Failed to Materialize Stock * nail liomta. CHICAGO , Dec. 10. There vraj little life In the trade in wheat today , but with [ area cxx | > rt clearances and expectations of a decrease In the visible supply , cioln ? prices were a little h'eher. ' Compared with the closing yesterday wheat is about l.j'c higher ; corn And oats unchanged and provisions a trifle lower. _ The opcnlnp rprices In wheat vrero un changed with May at G7j'c. The drooping tendency of yesterday's market was con tinued for a time and prices declined. There was a rally , however , when it rjwas shown that the export clearances for the wecU in wheat , and Hour from both coasts were 3,217.000 bu. , compared with 2..V > 9,000 bu. last week. May advanced to C7 e , but the advance \rns soon lost. Selling orders from New York were licht , and the cold wave , which was expected to hurl itself upon the exposed wheat fields , failed to materialize. Early trading was light and the enthusiasm of the bears evap orated. May crawled down to G8tc. but there it ruled steady for a time and ad vanced slightly on light northwestern receipts. The newi became more bullish and the market ruled firm for the remainder of the session. News came from Minneapolis that the mills which were shut down there would all resurao next week. San Francisco wired tnat buying- wheat there for French account had ab sorbed about 2,000,000 bu. in the last few days , that thn price advanced there yester day and that buying still continued ou a heavy scale. An advance in wheat and flour at Paris helped to contirm the San Francisco news and the market closed llrm wilh May at the top figures of the day. Ma ; opened atOT c. soldoff ije. then % e and advanced c to the close at 678c. Tao corn market was featureless , with fluctuations confined to S ° range. May opened c off at 3J\c. and sold up to S9s'c , where it closed. Bartlett. Frailer and N. B. Keam sold early in the day , and what little buying there was had puts for its basis. Dullness continued to be the feature in the oats market. Offerings wore licht and buyers scarce. May opened unchanged at 30' c , sold up Sc , lost fo and reacted L c to the close at the opening figure , the fluctua tions following those of corn. The provision market opened steady , but weakened with the early decline in wheat and failed to sympathize with the later firmness in crain. Heavy estimates for Monday's hoc receipts were a depressing Influence aud closing prices were lower all around. Compared with last night January pork is 2 , ' 'c lower , January lard , 7.1i'c lower , and January ribs. 7 > jC lower. More business was done batween 10 and 12 o'clock on the Stock exchange today tnan on any day of the week that has just ended , but the dealings were mainly on the bear side and the peuoral tendency was toward lower prices. The market opened dull -and irregular , but In tne main lower , but soon developed a fair degree of firmness , Sugar being the leader. .Large purchases were made in an effort , it is said , to compel the shorts to cover , it beinc reported that the chances were more favorable to a better susrar schedule in the tariff bill. A reaction took place before half an hour had elapsed , which was merely fractional , except in the case of a coupla of usually Inactive stocks. This was checked by the development of an active buvinp movement in General Electric , and there was a pretty general improvement. Sugar adancin ? 1'i per cent , Rubber 1 per cent , and AVneelinp i Lake Erie preferred 1 * per cent. Shortly after 11 o'clock the baying became lighter , which emboldened the bears , who attacked Supar. the otner industrials , the grangers and other shares , with the result of brine- ing about a decline rantring Irom ' 4 to 2V per cent. In the final dealings there was an attempt to cover on the part of a few shorts , which resulted in a recovery of a small frac tion in some shares and gave a shade firmer tone to the speculation at the close. Most of the shares are , however , lower on the day's transactions. The bond market was generally weik throughout the day on a fair volume of business. The course of cattle values has bocn unin terruptedly doxvnward. In addition to the usual ante-holhiay dullness in the rat tle market , the prevailing stringency in the money market Is hurting the con sumptive demand , and in consequence the dressed beef men have no difficulty in tilling their limited orders at lower prices. The bulk of the receipts are half fat , warmed up and shortfed cattle , and these kill out very unevenly. Cattle that looked cheap in the pens killed out dear , and eattlo that looked comparatively high priced ou the hoof killed out more than worth the money. In order to be on the safe side buyers have endeavored to get everything cheap , both peed ntid common. The com paratively liberal supplies have enabled buyers to take off fullv 25c ou all grades this week , except , perhaps , the fancy stock , of which the supply has been too limited to cut much of a flgiiro. - ' Tnule. Dull biUurdajTnule. The market today was but a repetition of the five preceding days' trade. Receipts were not heavy , nor was the quality any thing extra. There was the same indiffer ence on the part of buyers toward anything not fat or in good condition. Prices were hardly quotably lower than Friday , but they were not any higher. Business was slow on all but the better grades , ana altoecther the entire supply was light. It was late in the afternoon before thf last cattle had gone over the scales. Fair to ( rood l , iO to 1,400-lb. steers sold at from J4.M to $ t.3Z. There were no really good to choice beeves in the yards. Poor 10 fair stuff weigmng from S.V ) to 1.200 Ibs. sold all the way from -5 to J.T75. A few western cattle wcra received , but they were mostly butchers' stock and feeders. - There seemed to Ue a litt.o more life and tone to the cow market , this being due more to the rather limited supnly than to any im provement in the demand. A bunch of very choice conifed c-ovrs brought S3.r > 3. Really choice cows have sold all ripht all week , but the general run of the offerings arc selling all of a quarter lower than a week ago. Sales today Included poor to choice cows and heifers at from J1.23 to $3.25 , with fair to good stuff largely at from S3.13 to 1.70. Common large calves and yearlings were slow sellers at from ? ' - to SI , while fair to choice veals were in active de mand and flrtu at from $ . ' 1.75 to $3. There was a fair inquiry for rough stock of all kinds and prices were firmly held , common to very coed balls , oxen and stags selling at from SI.05 to $ a. Tnere has not been much life to the feeder market all week , but the trade today , as is generally the casn on Saturday , was particularly dull. Supplies have not been heavy , but with the demand from the coun try also restricted the market has weakened materially , and while really desirable feeders are not more than lOc or 13o off on the common light and rousrh stock there has Occu a declinu of from 15c to 2.V. Good to choice feeders are quotable at $3.UO@3.50 ; tfair o coed at f2.7rx , : i.oO. and common and btockers at J.OO < .rJ.50. Itciirrsentallve 5ale .
