THE OMATIA DAILY BEEt WKDNESDAY , NOVEMBER 1 , lb COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Remarkable Period of Liquidation NoloJ on 'Ohango Yesterday. WHEAT WENT DOWN ON ALL SIDES neuron All Around U'pro Simply lnri ly - Inif to llotdrr * of Hint Cereal All ruction * Were Aiixluua to Sell. CHICAGO , Oct. ni. Tlioro was a most ro- mnrKnMo period of liquidation on 'Cliatipo today anil strange to say It was caused by the repeal of the silver law by the senate. The contrary effect had been looked for and It came H J n genuine surprise to dealers. Appaicntly everybody In the trnde , big and lltllo , uero last week all loading up for the advance tlmt was expected to follow * the favorable action on silver. When the re port came each holder was to bo shrewder than his fellow traders and sell on the bulgo. So unhcrsntly wes this idea'carrlcd out tliat there was no chance for a bulge. Instead of n jump of lo In the price , on which the bulls might secure profits , there was was a break of Ic straight at first prices. This was startling to the leaders who had heavy lines on hand. Once the Belting was started there soemcil no end. While Chicago traders were selling out they had the mountain of wheat hold by Now 4 Yorlc houses to frighten them. _ Baltic and East Indian and other foreign ports shipped ! for Europe for the week over 5,000,000 , bu. of wheat. Bight primary wheat markets had nearly u.Mo.onObu. of wheat tccolpts for two dajn. The visible supply increased WH9.000 bu. , or 1,000,000 bu. moro than estimated. The llgurci nil around wcro simply paral.v/- ( up to holders. It was soil , sell and keep on celling. There was no plonlc , however , aim- ply liquidation. Fiom CO o on Saturday the December prlco started at CTiJfc , and the decline never stopped until it reached C3 ( fo at 1 o'clock. und TOVc. The heaviest selling of the day uns during tlio last hour. Dispatches from the northwest said receipts at Minneapolis and Diiluth would fall off after this week , but the bcnrs would not allow the bulls un disturbed possession of even that little item of comfort. They said rccolpts might dimin ish at Minneapolis and Duluth because some elevator men up there had arranged for money to carry wheat In their country houses , but that farmers' deliveries would bo none the less heavy for some time .vol. Everything else of a speculative character was adversely affected by the heaviness of wheat , but there was comparatively Uttlo doing except In the big pit. Corn acted as if , but for wheat. It might have advanced , and oats also resisted any expression of sympathy with the demoraliza tion of the leading cereal. Corn closed ut a rite-lino of ' o and o its % c. Provisions wore heavy and the decline at the close for January delivery was 15o In pork , -jjC iu lard and lOc In rihs. Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat , 140 cars : corn. 935 cars ; oats , 155 cars ; hogs. 20,000 head. No board tomorrow on account of Mayor Hnriison's funeral. A bear market under bear conditions partly describes the course of speculation on the Stock exchange today. The event which had been for weeks looked forward to as the precursor ofa forward movement had come to pass und yet stocks were going down at a rate which threatened disaster to the stability of values of even iho steadiest securities on the list. Wall street , had to a largo oxtcnt , dis counted the repeal of the silver bill last week and this custom of the professional clcincut 1ms becoino so well known that the vicarious operators 1m vo begun to gamble on this propensity themselves. The general public which does not trade on the Stock ox- chanRO and which h.is been reading of the dominating Inllucnco of tlio silver question on speculative values , naturally expected to sco u-boom on the stock market this morn- fno mid nnsKflilv n fnu * bunha Ht/1 imti.n upon the exchange and Itift their ilccces be hind as evidence of their good lalth. But to the street the fruits of victory have Ugcn readily picked and it Is now time to make a turn on the other side of the account. The weakest spot in the market , was selected as the point of the Ural attack , and Sugar which had been uimuly Influenced by manip ulators from inside the company was made tlio objective point oCa flerco drive which quickly extended along the llnq. Western Union , Hock Island , Chicago Gas , tit. Paul. Burlington and Northwestern wcro affcoted most severely but the entire list in a lessor decree. London 'was n heavy seller , marketing stocks bought at the low level of the days of panic. Liquidation was being effected by the di rectors of the bull pool In Western Union. In expectation of a slump , stop-loss orders had been placed in blocks for the leading shares and these quickly reacted , added to the offerings placed on 4 nmrkot already overweighted with stocks put out solely to send it down , and prices did go down , halt ing occasionally , retracing their footsteps now and again and nt times during the afternoon recovering a good portion of the vantage ground , but only to move bade again to n lower level than before. It was a boar market merely because the loading operators considered that by less effort n greater prollt was to bo inndo on that sldo of the account.
