T1IR OMAHA DAILY HEE : SUNDAY , SEPTEMHER 10 , 1893-S1XTEEN PAGES. If CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE The Financial Situation is Gradually Grow ing Bolter , PROSPECTS ARE VERY ENCOURAGING BoTornt IlniiM llnvn Hnnponul Tlielr Doori , Aniline Tim in M ttin American > llonnl Vlnwn of 11 I'lnnneler Jobbing Trniln IncrcnMtii ; . 7no past week has shown a splendid change for the bettor In financial nnd com mercial circles. All kinds of business show nn Increase in volume and prices are ruling llrmor. The bank clearances show a strong Increase over these of the past week and month , hut there Is still n largo decrease In comparison with the clearings for the same week last year. Kvcu with this poor showIng - Ing thirteen of tholoadlnR eastern and cen tral western cities show n greater decrcaso than does Omaha. Only two cltle show any increase at all. ' . . .V. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7(10,317.00 ( , In speaking about the financial situation yesterday , Cadet Taylor , vice president of the Globe Ixiau and Trust Savings bank , of this city , said : "Omaha has not experienced the currency famine which existed In Now York and all the eastern states during .July nnd .early In August. Had such a condition of uitnirs developed In thu west , our eastern financial friends would not have been slow to have sharply criticised such methods , but the west is always goncrous in Its criticism. "I was told the other day of an incident which happened in a city of five national banks in one of the Now Kni'land states dur ing July. The state was * shipping some line cattle to the World's fair , the freight on the same being $1,000. The check was drawn on n certain hank nnd ttio bank promptly paid it by giving a check on another bank. When the currency was demanded it was refused. The parties were left In the condition of bolnn long on checks and shoit on currency. After spending a day they finally obviated the diniculty by each of the live banks part- ine with Mill ) currency. "Money has been close in Omaha , but no nuch currency famine as describe ! above ha oxhted. Many of our banks hnvo not oven found it necessary to rediscount any paper. Of course , it would have relieved tlio .situation and made the pathway of busi ness men easier , to have taken advantage of the opportunity to rediscount , bat wo doubt if It was more than an opportunity. The situation was so much worse in the east than it was in Omnha that the bankers were Justified in depending upon their own resources. "Through the recent financial disturbance , there is nothing but commendation for Omaha banks , as a rule. They have not only taken caroof country banks so far as possible , but they have not permitted any legitimate business in the city to suffer. Hotween the May and July statements' the loans cf the Omaha national banks were reduced S'J.ttl'J.OW ' ) . This action speaks for itself. It shows the solidity of our business houses , nnd the ability of business men to meet and overcome , apparently , unsiinnount- able obstacles. If there Isany criticism that can be made , it is that banks have been slow to resume loans , but it must bo romoin- bored that the shrinkage in deposits -was continual up to thu last week in August , when the tide turned , as it always docs , after a craze has run out. Under such circumstances it would bo folly for banks to encour.ige any marked movement - ment in the loan department. Wo think Omaha banks havy boon a little too conserv- ntlvo In carrying a greater cash reserve than the managers of the lUnlc of England permit. Of course , they may bollevo that it is good policy to simply take the money of depositors and store it away in the vaults , but It is a kindly consideration shown to the customers that is not often mot with. Time , of course , will correct all these things , and bankers will again return to hanking. "Tho country is now seeing the good effects of the increase in the currency issue in the United States to national banks , but they have not availed themselves of the maximum amount to which they were entitled under existing laws. The tendency of national banks for some time has boon to take the minimum issue rather than tlio maximum. The shrinkage in deposits between May nnd July V/M Sl'JT.ClKi IKK ) in the national hanks of the country . 'I hat was the money withdrawn from ciret.i ition by reason of the panic. During the month of August over ? iiO.)00,000 ( ) of now currency was issued to the banks. To this Iiiiineiisn amount must ho added the 1m- portatlons of gold , amounting to nearly as much moro , KO that wo have a substitute today of very marked proportions , for that which has gone Into safety deposit vaults and stockings , anil has been withdrawn from the business world. "It required some little time to trot this How of currency started , hut it is working its way Into business circles with good effect. To this amount also must bo added the gold coinage of the country. The Treasury do partmcnt hii.sSU)00OOOor.iiOfli ( ) ) ) . ( > 00 In gold bullion , which is part of the $100,000,000 gold reserve. Tlio do maud for rediscounts is very light. "Locally , the situation is vcrv much Im proved. Thorn is a more cheerful focllng among th-1 bankers , reason has ngrli : roturncd to the people , deposits are no restored , business men are being accom modutod in a moderate way. and they nrc gradually calling back their furluughci workmen. The Now York banks are con tributing to the hotter spirit by let ting go of some of their hoarded gold and transactions in clearing house cer tificates are becoming a thing of the past. That Indispensable requisite for better limes , public confidence , Is also becoming manifest. Mercantile agency , through Manager W. H. Itobcrson , nays : "A careful canvass of the situation dcvolopos u decided betterment , which , though not so marked In some lines as in others , nevertheless Indicates a well do- lined improvement. "Jobbers are nil feeling and talking better. One of the largest in groceries said to mo yesterday : 'If our trade the balance of this mouth continues as good as during its first week wo will do the heaviest month's business wo have ever had. ' Others in the same line report butter trade , with no complaints its to collections. The principal of a largo dry goods house says they reduced their force during the dull time , and with present help have been unable to take care of this week's orders , sales being largo and collec tions good. Hats , caps , boots and shoes , drugs , hardware and lumber all show moro or less increase , tlio gain in the latter being mostly from country orders. "In retail lines the dry goods houses , while taking a cheerful view of the situa tion , are as a whole unable to moro than say 'business during the week shows a trillo increase , which , considering Monday being a holiday , is all that could bo expected. ' One of the largest houses sugu'esti that not more than 60 per cent of IS'JJ sales will ho recorded this year , this being based on tlio loss of work by a large number of persons and in n reduction In wages of other : ? . "Clothing and men's furnishing goods have been in better demand , partly on account of 'the stranger within our gates' attending the county fair. Leading houses in this class are well prepared to take earo of the much bettor trade expected to follow close on the arrival of cooler weather. "Tho feature of the wooic In banking circles was the reopening on Thursday of ttio American National bank , which event , after a hard battle under most trying cir cumstances. must bo conceded as rollecting much credit on its olllccrs , who , on being reseateil and taking up the lines once moro , are also to bo congratulated In the practical exhibit of conlldi.'nce shown by the liberal and increased deposits of many of their old , us well as some now customers. 'Hankers generally report money easier though not a snfllclent increase in deposits has taken place to warrant an invitation to even good customers to accept largo loans. Omaha bankers are , with much less reluct ance than shown a few weeks ago , aidins all worthy customers with necessary amounts , ami notwithstanding interior banks are likely to draw liberally , during the fall mouths , it is freely predicted that there will be/ money enough and to spare before the close of the em-rent year. A con siderable demand for farm loans is apparent in liberal ofterimis of this class of security , although , an a matter of fact , the loan com panies , with perhaps one or two exceptions , are , so tar as Nebraska is concerned , duing but little. "Lincoln reports grocery sales light , har ness dull , while lines affected by the reopen ing of a now school year are some bettor. Collections are still slow in most lines , but a better feeling is quilo general. Hanks are decidedly hopeful , their deposits being on a steady gain and a quiet improvement from this time on is predicted. "Grand Island s.iys : 'Trado hero will un doubtedly bo light during the fall and winter - tor , resulting moro on account of crops and prices than any general financial disturb ance , except so far as the trade of railway employes is concerned. Hanks are dls''ount- ing moro freely now than during the past three months , though in some cases extend ing paper , preferrinir to carry it a * past duo. Aside from applicat'ons ' from cattle feeders for loans for moderate amounts , there ap pears to bo vorv little demand for money. and thu banks generally are In easy financial condition.
