ClltCAOO , III. , March 8-It was a slow day on
'change today. HuKliicss was meager and
nuctuatlonssllght. Compared with yesterday
closing the prices are as follows : Wheat Uo
higher for May , corn lie higher , pork from 214C
to Go lower , lard 2"c lower for May and from
7'-Jc to 10c lower for later deliveries , fibs Do
lower for May.
Theru was a general disposition to wait anil
BOO what the government report would show-
as to the amount of wheat In farmers' hands.
The price of May wheat In New Vork was
quoted as tow as 70o or only 2ic ! over Cnlc ipo ,
whllo the leglllmato dllTerence Is about lOc ,
and May In Minneapolis-sold as low as GGV ,
thu lowest price yet touched this season. All
this seemed to Impress traders with the con
viction that wo were materially out of line
with other markets and look'-d fora speedy
adjustment. Hence there was not much disposi
tion to trade. Prlco changes were conllned tea
a range of'ic.
There was rather moro disposition to sell
July wheat today , which sold at from 'I ? to V :
dl count , ns compared with the prices current
for May. The reason assigned for thu weak
ness In July was that the weather was consid
ered fimmiblo In the winter wheat districts.
Corn operators were discussing t he govern-
mentcrop report and some of tini ; shorts were
afraid It would bo bullish. This caused
fuither covering nnd at the same time pie-
vented unv liberal selling. The wet weather
waHiiUo favorable to the long side as t was

to a dec'llno of fiom 10c to lOc for live hogs at
the yards and the quality of the receipts

I buying by HID local operators the market advanced -

ing prices , Some teall/ing later carried t bo
market down below the opening figures. I liu
subsequent trading was maiki'd by an upward
tendency , the market closing .steady.
Kstlmated receipts for tomorrow : \\heat ,

A VOTING MACHINE ,
Invention of an Onmlii : Man Thill l'ri < ml < p
lo Maltn Vutlnit I'nny.
A contrivance which Is termed n voting
machine has been invented by Albert Hjo-
borg , a resident of this city. Its chief pur-
IHise , us claimed by the Inventor , U to nmko
easy and rapid the process of voting , to lire-
vent fraud in elections nnd to obtain quick
returns.
The Inventor Is now engaged n > on n mo-
tnlllo model of the machine , which will bo
finished In about six weeks. Ho will then
give these who desire to Inspect the tnachlno
an opiKirtunlty to do so.
Mr. Sjoberg , the Inventor , was born In
Sweden , is n machinist by trade nnd was nt
one time superintendent of n foundry and
machine : shop In his native country. In 1878 ,
at the exposition of Jonkoping. ho was
awarded the llrst prize for a carpenter's
tool ( ) ( which ho invented. Coming to this
country In 18711. ho followed his trade until
Ib8l. when , owing to physical Injuries then
received , ho was obliged to give It up. Since
then he has been engaged principally hi the
newspaper business.
Tlio machine uhieh helms now invented Is
described as a box t tree and one-half feet
long , eleven inches high nnd twenty inches
deep. It has 100 keys , which work some
thing like these of a cash register. Tliev
are painted of different iulors to distinguish
the different parties. These keys when
pressed down become locked in such n way
us to prevent the easting of more than one
vote for any particular person , and are yet
capable of such adjustment as to allow the
electors to vote , for example , for throe out
of nine senators , where three onl.x are to bo
voted for At one eml and on the side oppo
site the keys is a lever , which is raised and
lowered b'.v the voter after lie has cast his
ballot. This movement throws those ku.\s
which have been pressed down , hack
again into position , ready for the next
voter , an alarm sounding at the same time to
indicate that he has i'.mshed. On the tup of
the box is a slide which remains locked until
the polls are closed. Upon removing tills
there appears a covering of glnss and be
neath the glass n system of wheels ( there
being one for oaoh kov ) upon which the
number of votes cast is ronlsteivd. provision
being timdu for the registering of as many as
l.HK ( ) votes. From the numbering upon those
wheels Is the Html result obtained.
The process of voting , should this mncnlno
he employed at our elections , would be some
thing like this :
Tlio voter is admitted to the room whore
the judges sit. Ho is given no ballot , hut
steps immcdiitcly to the machine. He sees
a row of keys of various colors au.l properly
labeled before him. Ho lluds upon closer in
spection that , the red keys , for example ,
represent the democrats , the white the
republicans , and a combination of the two ,
the Independents. Ho llnds also that if ho
desires to vote a straight ticket ho need
press down but one key , but not so If he
wants to "scratch. " Wo will suppose that
lit votes a mixed ticket. Ho sees at the left
end three keys njxjti which the throe candi
dates for governor are named. He presses
down the red key. voting for the democratic
candidate. This key remains down and la ,
together with the other two keys , securely
locked. < Ho cannot cast another ballot for
candidate without and
' raising lowering
the lever at the end. But this would sound
an alarm and indicate to the Judccs that
JJ | had finished. This , therefore , ho dares
not do , for it would deprive him of
the right to vote for candidates
for other oftlees. Contenting himself with
the one vote for governor , ho passes on to
th next set of candidates , and so continues
in ho comes to the nine senators. Ho
wants to vote for the republican candidates ,
lie picks out the three whlto keys , and
presses them down , thus securely locking
them and the others. In this manner ho
proceeds until he reaches the last sot of can
didates. Ho then raises and lowers the
lover , this throwing all keys back into posi
tion and removing all evidence of the char
acter of the ticket ho voted. The alarm
which is sounded by the movement of this
lever tells the judges that the voter has
linishcd easting his b.illot and that the ma-
ehinu ; is ready for the next voter. The keys
can ; be manipulated very rapidly , the time
consumed in voting a mixed ticket being
much shorter thatf that now required.
The box is kept in the custody of the
