terest in the matter is due principally to the
fact that it is its part of the contract to
maintain it forerer. An attempt was made
j esterday to form a combination amoaj ; the
bidders for the purpose of running the price
away up and poolinc the excess profit among
the twenty-four bidders , but two companies ,
the Missouri A'alley Bridee and Iron com
pany of Leavenworth. Kan . which has six
bids in. and a St Louis company , which
afterwards failed to bid. refused to enter ,
aud broke up tbe combination. Tb-ere promb
ises to be some lively times in the oouncil
when the awarflinp of tbe contract comes
up. ns considerable "pressure" is being
bronchi by several of the bridp-e men to soji
cure a fnvorable consideration of their bids ,
It was reported that there was a combinat
tion in the council in fnvor of some one bidv
der. but dihpent inquiry failed -unearth
any one who linew about it , and none of the
bridge men expressed themselves as dissatis
fied with the chances for fair competition.

A. Kroner , who runs a snirt store at 939 O
street , and Kroner it Saaw , who operate a
similar factory near Twelfth and O streets ,
are in trouble with the Clerks union. The
clerks claim that the flnns sipnod an agree
ment not lone : ape to close their stores at
C.SO , together with all other stores in the
same line. The acroomentvent into effect
the first of the month , but two weets after
wards Kroner violated liis agreement and
kept his store open. Today representatives
of the Clerks union filed complaints charp-
ing him with keeping open his establishment
in violation of the Sunday laws , and a bitter
fight is thus inaugurated.
The will of Jennie AL Hopkins was filed
for probate today. She bequeaths her en
tire estate to her husband , Daniel Hopkins ,
ex-warden of the penitentiary , to do with as
lie pleases , and at his death to be divided
among the children.

at the council chamber , has been indefinitely
