"Thut's n queer culling , " ealtl a gentle
man tlio othci' morning , aa ho read n
Btory nbout a man who.advertised for
bad boys to punish at so much apiece ,
or so much a week , according to the
work necessary ! "but , como to think of
it , there are ninny strange ways of mak
ing a dollar.
"For Instance , I live out of town In n
growing New York suburb ; but wo are n
little weak yet in the way of water
vrorkH. Hut that Is remedied by old
Peter , a town character , who pumps
our tanks full of water Uvlco a week ,
lie goes the rounds of the village and Is
known as hand engine No. 1. Ho Is a
master hand at a fire , being chief en
gineer , fireman and engine combined.
Once , and once only , Peter was ill , and
the place missed him more than It would
the doctor. " '
From a little advertisement another
Btrange business was brought to light.
It called for clients who wanted to bo
awakened in the mowing at any time
from iJi.'iO till 0 o'clock. Tills man , it
was found , had already quito a practice ,
but ho wanted to build it up so that his
Bon would also have a route. Ho said :
"Somo time ngo I was thrown out of a
job , and , look around as hard as I could ,
1 wan unable to find work at my trade.
My newsman , who kindly allowed mo to
look over the want ads ti. his papers ,
gave mo a tip one day by saying :
" 'I was hito in getting up this mornIng -
Ing , and it has kept me behind all day.
I don't know whether my alarm clock
went oil or not , and I think I have got
BO used to It that it goes olT without my
hearing it. Now , if a man would only
call at my door every morning it Nwould
bo worth half a dollar a week to him. '
" 'I'll call you for that at any hour you
r Kay , ' I replied quickly , glad to see day
light. The bargain was made there , on
the spot. I awaken him at . ' 1:30 : o'clock.
Then I know other men in the neighbor
hood who had to get up early , and before
the week was over I had -twelve cus
tomers at different periods from 25 to 50
cents a week.
"Where two men live near each other
I make a reduction , and whore a man
has a modest job I only charge him ' >
cents a week.
"Besides this I have transients who
want to catch trains , and in summer I
wake up excursion parties on the day of
the excursion and the day after. The
day after a holiday I am busy until 7
o'clock. I use my oldest boy , and also
Ills brother , but the little one is hardly
old enough yet. "
"Who are your customers ? "
"Milkmen , newspaper dealers , truck
men , bartenders , drivers , clerks and
laborers. "
"Any policemen or night watchmen ? "
"I wake 'em ' up if the roundsman is
coining. Once I found a policeman sleep
ing in a storm house. lie said he was
watching for burglars on the other side
of the street. lie had just got straight
ened out when Ills roundsman appeared' .
But I don't ' charge anything for those
wako-ups. "
"How much do you make ? "
"I'm making about 820 a week. I go
to bed at 7.or 7:30 : and got up at 2. I
don't need an alarm clock , and I don't
pay anybody to call mo , as I wake my
self as regularly as clockwork myself.
My patrons provide me with keys , and I
have got the job down so fine that they
toll mo I never wake up anybody but the
one who wants to got up. Some of my
ulcopors are so heavy that I lose time.
When this gets too bail I demand keys
to their rooms , ns it would never do to
lot one of thorn oversleep himself. I
never go away till the man tolls mo ho is
out of bed. "
"How do you manage It when two or
more of your customers want to be
awakened at the same time ? "
"That was a hard ono to solve at the
start , but I soon got around that by call
ing ono a little earlier than the other ,
and changing around so that each got
his turn at it. Some of my customers
use pretty strong language , but I don't
charge them anything extra for that. "
This man has a monopoly of the busi
ness in a largo district on the East Side ,
but the culling could bo developed in
any section of the city , and probably in
time a regular messenger service will bo
established , with uniforms and the mil
Banco ticks used by the district messes
gers.
gers.An author of long standing , as ho
calls himself , advertises thai ho will
write a book on any subject for anybody
for moderate pay. Ho was asked how
ho could write a book on something ho
know nothing about and ho replied :
"Easy enough , just as the successful
reporter of a country newspaper does , by
Btringing words together. It isn't what
iv man knows that makes his book sell ;
it's tlio readablencss that counts. A day
in the Astor library is all I want to
write a book on any subject , as I adver
tise. Some of the best speeches on the
tariff wore written by mo and spoken by
porno pretty big men before election. I
am ready to write the president's mes-
Bago for him , but I don't expect to got
the contract. I charge from half a cent
to a cent a word , according to the re
search necessary. Generally I can write
n book without any research at all. "
Quito a businesH-in renting umbrellas

is necessary and the umbrellas are

But foi- the fact that Jay Gould took
particular pains in llfo to provide u rest

which would bo inaccessible to ghouls ,

have succeeded in their efforts to spring

Mr. Gould's- body and hold it for n ran

Uoiild mausoleum In Woodland ceme-

the raid. The only foundation for these
stories is that George Gould has re

the newspapers which scored n , "beat'1
on the giioul story have fallen under
suspicion of having issued themselves
The stories have cuiihod n uneasiness
in the Gould family , for the tomb of the
dead financier Is as impregnable as a
Fort , nnd it would bo next to impossible
for body snutehers to make a successful
raid.
It is not specially guarded as has been
atcd , but two men in the employ of the
cemetery corporation puns it three times
: in hour'tluring their nightly rounds and
examine the entrance to see that every
thing is intact. Besides that , the mausol
eum is fitted up with three separate
"ghoul alarms,1' ono cuoh on the outer

the compartment in which the bodies of
Mr. and Mrs. Gould i-esU Those alarms
are connected by underground wires

the wires break , as thov would do if an
attempt were made to force an entrance
lo the tomb , the alarm boll would bring
the keeper and his assistants to the spot
in n jllTy. Mr. Gould had a mortal fear
of having his body stolen , and he pre
pared against such a contingency years
ioforo his death. Ho did his work well.

The charity ball was held this year In
the Madison Square garden and was n
jreator success , socially and financially ,
than any of its predecessors. Everybody
that is anybody in tlio particular sot over
which Mr. Ward Mc'Allister used to pre

were revelations of the dressmaker's art.
Mrs. Kdwurd Cooper , who with White-

carried Sll.'i.OOO worth of diamonds with
lior whuirshu took up the line of march

building to the other. There were many
other ladies who'wore fortunes on their
dresses , and it was estimated by ono
capable of judging that there was $1,000-
000 or inoro in diamonds present. Tlio
affair netted 817,000 , very small interest
on so much collateral , but bettor than
nothing. It goes to the Nursery and

A writer in the Recorder hits off a
current rumor in this fashion :
It is now whispered that Mrs. Cleve
land is going to have a s'hush !
It is said that she has gone to Buffalo
to toll her mother that s'hush !
If the charming report bo true it will
bo the first time the white house has

Good news travels like wildfiro.

How empty the honor of naming a

When people find nu article much superior
to anything of the kind they have ever before -
fore used , they nro almost sure to toll their
friends nbout it , and especially if they know
of sonic friends needing such an article.
Dealers nlso soon learn the true vnluo of
their goods , and when they have an article
of unusual merit they will almost iiivrfriably
mention the fact to their customers. This
accounts m n great measure for the largo
sale on Chamberlain's Cough Uomcdy. Hero
is an Instance : W. Ij. Needhnni , a prominent
citizen and business man of Orrsburg. Mo. ,
has been selling Chamberlain's Cough
Keinedy for several years and .recommends
it to his customers , because in his experience
it has proven to bo the best for colds , croup
and whooping cough. Ho says itjs the most
popular medicine that ho handles , and gives
the best satisfaction. 50 ceut bottles for

A Hepe-w Story.
A story that has gone all over the
country was first told by Mr. Dopow
when ho was pitching into the demo
crats and accusing them of constantly
changing their position on the currency
question and on the tarilT > issuo. It was
about a spotted coach dog that would
not wash , wiys the Boston Advertiser.
The husband of a lady In Peokskill
got rich in tlio foundry business , having
beon.proviously a moldor. So the wlfo
sot up a carriage. Some ono told her
she ought to have a coach dog , otherwise
the establishment would not bo com
plete. So she came to a dog fancier in
Now York and bought a nice spotted
coach dog. A week or so afterwards
she was out ono day and got caught in a
tremendous rainstorm which washed all
the spots oil the dog. In great fury c
wont back to the dog merchant and
wild : "You scoundrel , why did you
cheat inn by selling mo this dog as a
coach dog ? "
Said ho : "It's all right , madam , i
did not cheat you. Ho is a coach dog
but there is an umbrella goes with him
which I forgot. "
