The thirtocnth annual stnto convention of
Iho Younc Men's Chrlsllnn nssocintlon Is
has Just closed lia session nt Hastings. It
wns ono of the largest nnd most onthusinstio
conventions ever held by the association in
this state. The attendance was lunjo nnd
the convention wow especially notnblo
for the spirit of harmony and earnestness
man ! Ics toil.
The nuiuml report of the state executive
committee wns read last Thursday evening
and was full of encouragement for the work-
era of the association.
There Is probably no other organization in
the sftto of Nebraska that has cxoorionood
so larco an Increase In momborshln during
the east year as the Youne Men's Christian
association. While the number of associa
tions has increased buUittlo during the year ,
vat the mombersbip has almost doubled.
This shows that the associations uro not
merely springing up in some places nnd
dying out in other places , but that , all the
associations are inarching forward in the
line of progress. Last year the total mom-
hersbii ) of all tha associations in the
state wa < reported at the statu convention ns
bolnc 2-50t. : The membership is now con
siderably over 4.000. There are thirty-four
associations in the stnto. Txveiitv-two of the
number nro city associations , ton nro college
nssociationa nnd two are railroad aisocla-
tions. During the past year thrcn associa
tions hnvn boon discontinued , but flvo new
ones hnvo boon organised. Iho now asso
ciations nnvo boon orennizcd at St. Paul ,
BenUolmnu , l nils City. Lincoln. Normal and
the Western Normal. Fourteen associations
maintain rending rooms and the overai'o
a ally uttemUnco at all of them has been Sll >
men during the year. That feature
is a very strong ovicloico of the
popularity and praotlcabllilv of the
association work. The fact that SIG men
have been found dally In the Young Men's
Christian association reading rooms of the
associations in Nebraska sneaks volumes for
tha practical bonnllts conferred upon the
voung men of the state b ? this gro.it organi
zation. Thcro ura thirteen associations in
iho stnto ttmtemploy secrotnrios. There : ire
seven "bovs branches" in the state , with a
total membership of .Mil.
According to the report of the executive
committee the stale work is it :
bolter condition , linnnclally , than over
before. The committee started in
at the bozlnningof the year with n doticit ol
S3.-1S7 nnd pledges to hi applied on that
amount of onlv ? P > S7. By persistent nnd
rnreful work the committee has reduced thn
debt to the trifling sum of Jj-4 , and there
nre pledges on hand amounting to $513 to
offset this deficit. During the year Just
closed there was sprnt tll.OOO in pusting for
ward the work throughout the state. A
marked improvement hus been imdo all over
the state in the facilities of the different
associations. Several associations have gone
into now nnd larger noartmcnts nnd the Lin
coln association has opened n splendid now
building. In Iho line ot college wnrlc there
has noon n very distinct improvement both
as to character of iho work done and the in
crease of membership.
