Dotcutivo Vaughn of the metropolitan po lice force is llgurlng just now as n public benefactor , but ho doesn't know it. It is by permitting himself to become n laughing stock and butt of ridicule at which people- can smile audibly uud grow fat. Ana this is what they are doing , so that the gray-whis kered sleuth is unwittingly contributing to the good health and enjoyment of the entire commufiity. As ts well Known , a Missouri Pnciflc train was hold up and robbed at West Sldo several weeks ago and Mr. Vaughn has lain awake nights spending , in his imagination , the reward that would bo his when ho landed the robbers in jail. Ho wailed for a cluoand it finally camo. A couple of thieves who were under the surveillance of the policosaw that they must square themselves with the authorities or they would bo unable to pros per in their unlawful calllnij in Omaha. " So one of them wont to "Mr. Vaughn and intimated that ho know a thing or two if ho could bo assured that his identity would bo coucoalea. This was readily promised and the dotcctivo was given a "doad straight tip , " to the effect that u county uud city olllcial , who for the present shall bo namulcss , hud engineered the tram robbery and had received tholr share of the plunder from the cane they had employed to do the work. Those two olllcials , who by the way were soon to go out of ofilco , had just arranged for future occupation by purchas ing a saloon , and the veteran Hawkshaw al once declared that ho .saw through Ino whole thing. The men had planr.nd the train rob bery in order to get money to buy the saloon. Why , of course they hud the case was just ns clear as mud , and away wont Mr. Vaughn to got a little more evidence nnd claim the reward. The designing thief had told him that one John .tohnsou had led the gang em ployed by the instigators of the robbery , and Mr. Johnson was promptly arrested and landed in jail , charged with being a suspi cious character. The story of his wonderful catch was too great for the detective to keep locked within his own bosom , so a credulous reporter was taken into his conlldonco and the details of Dotocllvo Vaughn's ' -clever capture" were horaldcd to an admiring world. Johnson was put in the "sweat box" nnu sedulously pumped , but of course ho told nothing , simply because ho had nothing to tell. The man hadn't nerve enough to put tils hand in a sugar bowl , to say nothing of robbing a train , and the court discharged him , while Mr. Vaughn looked regretfully after him as ho faded out of the door. Still the dotectivn wa * not discouraged. Ho was satisfied that the aforesaid cfllcluls were guilty , and for days he haunted the vicinity of their saloon watching every ono who went in. He tucked his xvhiskora inside tils shirt , buttoned his collar up around his ears , and passed the regular patrolmen on their boats without giving a sign as to his Ul entity. And this ho has kept up to the present time , whllo thu two thieves , Shelby and Ciarlich , were given op portunity to do their work unwatchcd. Ono night a peddler was held up at Flf- tocnth and Mason streets , add these two men were arrested on the following morning for doing the job. The victim refused to inilontify them , but after they were released said that limy were the men , but that ho was afraid they would kill him if ho said to. Shortly afterward , a room on South Thir teenth street was entered by thieves who look $114 worth of clothes , aim the same two men wo a again arrested ana the clothes found In tholr possession. They are now In | all awaiting trial und Detective Vaughn Is still at work with the Information he ob tained from them endeavoring to run down the officials. And the city pays Mr. Vaughn 170 a month.
