0 THE OMAHA DAILY BEEilTHUHSDAY OCTOBER 1 , 1801. THE SFECDLATIVE MARKETS , Higher Prices Ruled nt the Opening , but Soon Reacted. ANOTHER ALLIANCE WHEAT CIRCULAR , No Decided Itcfliilts Were Antici pated , lint HIiortHVcro Nervous and HtisliRd Initiicdlatcly to Cover. CIIICAOO. III. , Sept , 30. The marvels nil itnrtod nlrong and higher on the llounl af Trade tills morning but with equal unanimity tended with a reaction which left tlicm lower tlinn tliu closing figures of yesterday. In wheat a great deal of the Inill feeling of yesterday WHS carried over but perhaps the most potent feature In the higher oponlnit was the liisnrnnce of a third farmers' alliance 'Hold ' Your Wheat" circular. Wlillo Iho trado-gcncrnlly did not look for any decided results It made the shorts nervous and they were ready to cover at the tap of the trading bell. Liverpool was firm , but London was 4'J'1 totid lowers receipts here were about as expected , but tho-.o at Minneapolis and Dtiluth showed a fulling oil us compared with thu rec nt licnvy Inllow , though ttlll liberal Another bullish Item was a telegram from Duluth tell ing of very heavy exports , with more In hand to go forward. December opened at fromlMUc to IM'iO , against 07Jio at the close yes terday. The demand was a sharp one for a time , but then the shorts scare began to subside , weakness set In and there was a gradual drop to07".k' . The conti nental markets wc-ro reported weak , followed by Liverpool. Foreigners were said to lie re- KclMngln New York , and the clearances were only 2I.OJO tin. . 40,000 tin. from riilladolphla nml none from llaltlmcro. The Belling was pretty fiee after the first half hour , lleiim let ting go a big slice of his yesterday's pur chases , while the Mew Yorl.ers also had free BclliiiK orders on the market. llradstreets reported the Increase In the available eupply of wheat east of the Itocklcs lit 2,2tn.O o bu. and K > .oi,0 IMI. on tint 1'aelllu roast making a total Increase of ' . ' . ! 83.00 bu. The weakness eonllmicd during the last hour and on free-el.Ing by Itoam and others and continued bear news , December sold oft to 07V' , reacted some on reall/.lng puichases by sliortH , but weakened again : iml closed easy ut07'ic , the bottom figureof the day. t'orn was active and very strong most of the session but eased oir some latur. The Htrengtb was duo to the small receipts , only I2i : cars. This , with liberal out Inspection , nlarmcd shorts and started them to covering nml oll'eilng being llvht. bluhcr prices ruled. October corn closed yesterday nt Q'J'.e , opened nt f''l'jc , sold up to Mine and receded to Klo. Then when It became known that the estimates for tomorrow was for only 1'iOcars tnero was some recovery and at 12 o'clock the prlco was.VI'tC. During the last hour a good deal of corn was put upon the market and It sold oil' sharply. The oirerlngs were bv the early purchasers who sought to realise their prollts , but them were few buyers and October quickly slumped to 61 Jic at which It closed. it Oats followed corn and closed lower. Pro visions opened higher In sympathy with grains , but they itilolly | weakened and con tinued to recede most of the day. It was ex pected thattheclellvcrlesof October tomorrow would be heavy and most of the tr.iillnv Was In shlfMnu October deals to moro deferred futures. The general list recovered the tone and the upward movement mndo some progress , when just after noon tlio announcement was made that the dividend had formally been passed. The market hcsllatcil , and soon Missouri 1'a- clllc began to drop , and Its decline did not cease until well Into Iho last hour , when It liad touched Olf per cent. This drop , however - over , proved the fact that the geneial market will break away from all disquieting Influ ences , as the list refused to follow Missouri I'acltlc down , though Union 1'uclllc , as was nat ural , bhowed considerable weakness In the pressure at the tlmo. The sentiment may temporarily prevent a decline to an export , basis , but all repeat that dollar wheat checked exports , and with our largo surplus the Intrinsic value of wheat must bo fixed at about what foreign consumers will pay. Corn , unllko wheat , has ovcrvthlng In the hhupo of news In Its favor. Receipts were light and tlio do- maud food , but the pressure of sales by receiving houses brought out largo specu lative sa'.cs and the market broke In tlio ab sence ) of a .short interest to absorb ulTerlngs. At the closing dcullno buyers wi-ro IndlU'orcut and the market looks llko soiling lower to morrow. Provisions opened steady but re ports from western points Indicated larger increase of hogs shortly and puckers became heavy sellers of pork and ribs for January delivery which had a depressing Influence on lard in the face of cables quoting Gd advance In Liverpool. On any further decline wo favor purchases. CIIICAOO , 111. , Sept. 20. Konnett , Hopkins it Co. to S. A. MoWhortor : Another hold hack your wheat circular was in the nowspapois this morning and of course It had an inflam matory effect. Everything of this nature has an Immediate Influence , whether a bull or boar , no trader wants to bo short except for u quick turn , and at the least indication of dan ger , no matter how Improbable , there is a rush for cover , hence the sentimental buying con tinues and sharp bulges , followed by s'ow ' do- clluus , characterize the market. I'oroU'ii markets did not respond to our ' 'o rally. To the surprise of tlio trade prices a"broid : were generally tlio lowest for weeks ; clearances were also thu smallest for a lone tlmo. Three French cargoes were resold in Now Vork and very little new export business was roportcd. Kccolpts In the northwest uru still liberal , but our ad vices Indicate a moder ate reduction before long. Shipments from Duluth are law , but this Is probably owing to a desire to move the wheat before the close of navigation advances freights. Sensational nnd Inlfnmmatory literature will doubtless delay the decline , but It scums pretty sure to come. Longs In corn took advantage of the light receipts and good foreign demand to market thulr holdings quite freely , resulting In a sharp decline uf the old opiums.Yhilo long futures were decidedly easy , wo look for a downward tendency in the lat ter for some time. Tlio old options are u fancy deal. Cash oats were heavy , stocks are increasing and thu nuw re ceipts don't Hint a ready market except at slluht concessions in prices. May oats were relatively firmer. 1'rovlslons started oil strong , but yielded to the general weakness and were raided near Iho close by Iho hi ? bears. Prices on this slump are expected to go lower than on the last one. CHICAGO , 111. , Sept. UO. Swartz , Dupeo & Mc- Cormlck to K. C. Swartz it Co. : Tltero were left , at the opening this morning , a few of those bull Inlluences on wheat which were at at work Thursday , especially the Inclination on the part of shorts to got out , In addition there were some other bull factors , an alli ance circular fur Instance ami talk of heavy exports from Duluth among other things. The noteworthy buying of the morning was prusumt-bly for .shorts account probably for an old tlmo Chicago trader who now makes his headquarters at New York. Ills buying started a decline which lasted until the close. Very free selling by TnesJay's bust buyers. IndllTcrant cables , reselling by exporters - porters of the seaboard and curtain unsettling rumors added to tlio weakness. The close was at a decline pf lo from the opunim ; . December closed at the bottom. Corn started strong on very small receipts , It wound up weak on anticipation of very hoavv deliver ies Thursday. The disturbing rumor Influ encing the whuat market unquestionably hastened the decline In this grain. Corn le- culpts continue light , Kxports ate much larger than they woto. It/ls to bo berne in mind. However , that an enormous now crop of line quality Is made and only needs time to become merchantable. January provisions were sold on a very largo scale bv manufac turers. That and thu certainty of large de- llvurlus In Iho morning resulted In a sharp decline. OMAHA I.LVK UroVK JTAKKKTli.
