THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SUNDAY. .QOTODER 12 , 1800.-TWENTY PAGES. IDE CONDITION OF TRADE , pie Week Generally Unproductive of New reitures , TARIFF INFLUENCE ON VALUES SLIGHT , r Tnule In Dry ( Joods A Few liiuiKCH In fSrncorlci llnr < l\vnro and Lumber A. Decline In Produce. The week past has not boon very prolific in how features so far as trade Is concerned. The r.e\v tariff has cither directly or indi rectly caused some changes In values , hut lamest most lines they have not beca very pro nounced. In dry goods tlioro ha * bocn a fair trade for thcseason. Quito a number of mall orders have been arriving nnd some ro-orders froia dealers who are running low on sotno special JlucJ. ; Ncar-by merchants have been laving In wlatrr stocks , so that the total volume of trade has been fully us crooil as could bo cx- pecto.l. At eastern point * the trade Is re ported In a very satisfactory condition , the opening week of the month having witnessed a fairly largo trade at Jobbers' hands. A \vcek or so of cold weather Is needed to glvo snap to the retail trade and stimulate It with n now Ufa. The .situation , however , Is strong nnd full of encouragement nnd Jobbers are looking forward to a fair trade right up to the clew of the scasoa. A few changes will be noticed in the quo tations In groceries slnco a wcoit ao. Sug- Kostions of a really now character are not very plentiful nnd operators go over much thoolil ground la commenting upon the slt- untli'ii. ' Local and out-of-town dealers are . . picking up trade and of course reducing sup- ' * ' * ] ilies. and must In tunny cases soon tind it jiece-isury to seek renewals and these In turn have to be selected from ac cumulations that are under generally fair con trol with a few so situated that onfy a very inoiiurato addition to the call woulil be likely to act a * a stimulant. The tariff question un fortunately remains as a disturbing factor to some extent at eastern points , the ruling of i the custom house ofllciuU In regard to the ap plication ol now rates anil the necessity for inakinir many withdrawals under protest , possibly Involving lawsuits to obtain a set tlement , creating annoyance and dissatisfac tion. tion.Jobbers Jobbers of hardware make wo of the same word tu expressing the condition of the trade as was used last week , "good. " Among the changes worth noting is the decline in wire milt and the tinner feeling In tin pinto. At eastern distributing -points it is stated that surface appearance * indicate a rather quiet condition of affairs in the iron and steel trader , and no facts coino to light that would afford any reason to suspect that affairs nro nny brighter below thanj.ibovo the surface. Certain it Is that no oxtcnslvo transactions in llnished or partly linished productions are talkoil of , nor is there any sign of Creator Inquiry. Crude materials are likewise - wise without movement other than the routine , and moot with merely fair demand. On rails and some lines of soft steel price * are somewhat unsettled , although very llttlo If at all lower than they were last week ; but pig Iron fairly holds its own In the absence of any considerable accumulation of supplies. Advices hy cable rellect considerable irregu larity In tno speculative branch of the Hag- llsh market , but uo change otherwise nornow M developments calculated lo withhold tbo Halo W of foreign products in this market. High BfcCi < grade American foundry pig Iron being still for' in light supply , Is firmly held nt former f prices , but low grade fqundry and mill irons ore barely steady. f The wh > lesulo lumber trade has not been as f heavy as dealers would lilco to see It. The most noticeable feature in. the-trade in country produce has been the extremely largo V receipts of chickens and the consequent do- ' cllno in prices. The sales have beca large , ) hut dealers have fouud stocks accumulating ' on their hands In spite of all their efforts. The market la eggs has been v * ry steady and tlioro has been no change for over two weeks. The supply of good butter has been light aud V arrivals have sold freely at stiff prices.
