Hankers say the money market Is dull nnd quiet and express Home surprise that It should remain forsolong a time ns It has In It * present lethargic condi tion. David Todd : The Romance of His Life nnd Loving ; by Cavid Mat-lure , is a now book by the Cassell Publishing company , 101 nnd 100 Fourth avenue , New York. It is nn interesting narrative of a strong , self-contained , God-fearing man , whoso only approach to weakness in character is brought nbout by way of his heart. Accustomed , however , to repression , owing to a life of loneliness , a peculiar devotion to purpose and n self-communing mind , ho puts aside temp tation and full of the ono promise of bis life's happiness , mid , encouraging tlio good in him , brings it about by sustained herculean effort to assist a def inite weight. The plot of the story is not particularly now. A minister , loving like other men and more , with nil the concen trated passion nnd intensity of n peculiarly individual soul , nnd making a sacrihcc of his heart for right und truth , is'n picture that has been drawn for us before In the literary chart. But his rugged character , in the midst of the army -of sinners , his aloofness nnd indifference to the injury and insult fashioned by their venomous tongues ; his mighty conquest of self are extra- ordinnrially well told nnd have a vital interest. The dialect lines are capital the sturdy Scotchmen , with their sharp tongues nnd rough jiersonal wit , making some broadly humorous speeches that are de licious in their ( ] unintness. David Todd is the sum and substance of the story , and the author has made him n liguro of strong personal magnetism. The descrip tions are admirable und tell of close observa tion , ns the Inner glimpses bespeak remarka ble powers of divination. Somehow the happiness in the book docs not even silver the cloud of the death of poor little Mysie , or the life to bo lived by David Todd , when the sun of his hope 1ms declined. W. E. Norris Is an engaging story teller , nnd his last novel , Misadventure , published by F. F. Lorcll .t Co. , Now York will rather add to his popularity. His mtrratives lire diverting , clean , with no soaring attempts , urnl-just ns much philoso phy as comes naturally into the life of every day men and women. It is rather u nice cir cle of people ono meets between his book covers , and although thay do not add ma terially to one's intellectuality they huvo the soothing aftertaste of an evening spent In ugreenblo company. Ciclly Uligb , the heroine of Misadventure , af fects the reader as not quite consistent. Pictured us a self-willed , independent woman , untrammcled throughout her girlhood by any sort of authority , ono naturally expects homo- thing strong in affections. But she is de cidedly laodieoan in her heart affairs und makes her hand n sort of movable feast , giv ing it finally in about the only available quar ter. The men , with the exception of tlio wicked Morton Uligh and tbo blase , town- tired Mark Chetwode , are decidedly unmter- cstingbut quite possible as the means of a pleasant evening. There is a little pngo In favor of smoking , urglnir as an argument for nicotine the sedat ive effect on the nerves , mid n philosophic view of the accidents of existence as an after affect. The author ostensibly discourages the custom In women , but in reality deplores that this uvcnuo to consolation Is not bt-com- Ingly open to them , with so many restrictions of the soothing balm of the weed that one is inclined to bollovu him approving and a bit dishonest. The Century for April will contain n timely article on "The Slave Tnido in the Congo Basin , " by one of Stanley's pioneer oflleors , Mr. K. J. CJluve. L'lotow and his gang had become u stand ing mid nwful menace to the settlement , of central Wyoming : , und It was quite generally tifftved that extermination of the cruel old fox mid his followers wns the only reoouso of the whites , whoso existence was .0110 of nlnrmiii uncertainty. The mob traveled rapidly mid under cover. They would kill u family , not sparing women or children , bum ranch buildings und leave with the horses at daylight. In twenty-four hours they would swoop down upon another pioneer home u hundred miles nway and repeat the work of murder , incendiarism und theft. A cheerful bit of barbarism little Itnown to tliv world was practiced when l-'lotow mid his men huppened upon a flock of sheep. The tenders were shot down us they ran nnd the dogs knocked In the head nnd laid nsido for u feast. Then the braves , each currying n big knife with sharp point nnd keen blade , fell upon the trembling , bleatim ? sheep. They would grasp nn animal by ono bind leg nnd run the knife through the member just below the Joint. The other hoof would bo inserted iu the slit and there WHS the humorous pura- * dox of u three-logged sheep with nil four legs in sight. The poor brutes would dlo in great ngonv in about seventy-two hours. It wns slmplv impossible to extricate the uncut hind leg. 'rids ' ingenious cruelty was somewhat , varied by cutting a hole in one ear mid thrust ing n foreleg into It , destroying the ability to travel unless the car tore , which hnpponcdloo often to suit the redskins. In half u day these Indians would destroy a band of fi.OOO sheep. They considered this work a great lurk. Tfiis Flotow , whose mime has never been interpreted , was the biirgcst , chekies > t , shrewdest and most repulsive looking Indian I over set eyes upon , writes n Cheyenne cor respondent of the Chicago Herald. lie win more than six feet tall , straight , brand shoul dered , thick necl-od and well muscled , willi deep chest. In battle with Indians ho. was reputed the equal of live combatants. No white man ever lived ftho could bundle him. Added to his unsurpassed strength was in credible agility and perfect knowledge of all styles of warfare. His craftiness kept bit own men on their guard. They Judu-iously kept from the tyrant's path when he was angry. lie well understood English , but ivoufd converse only in bis own tongue , and never did h sjK > rt any of the roumrkablis toggerv issued his people by the government , excepting not wen the blankets , for tin-so 1m exacted from the Nnvujns. The wretch would como boldly into settlements to trade , with blood still on bis hands , mid was the cleverest of swappers. So soon ns possible nfter Flotow's descent on Kawlins n party of men sworn to kill him started on the trail of the band. They wom followed by a detachment of cavalry from Fort SSteele. Lieutenant French , us brave a body us ever wore a uniform , assumed command 'f the entire party when tlio civilians were overtaken. In just a week ( and it was nn exciting sea son ) the pursuing party landed on Flotow in tamp nt evening. The rods were in n w Id und isolated mountain ravine uiul hud neg lected to plueo sentries. Though surprised , tlio Indians made a gallant light. The oppos ing forces numbered about the sumo , but thu chargers had the advantage , and then tb'-y ' were simply determined to win. They itrud bv volley and received no response after the second round. A dozen dead nnd dying Indians lay within fifty yards of their camp-lire , and great was " tho"dclight of both citizens and soldiers to Hud Flotow ju.st recovering from the sh rk caused bv bullet grazing his side. In ten minutes ho was all right physically , but bis mental distress was iKvp. His chagrin threw him into silontr age. He only glared nt b-s captors nnd held Ids tongue. Flotow was made a prisoner of war. Ho was allowed to ride bis own beautiful pony nnd had nn escort of four men. At night , nfter the llrsl day's bomcwrtrd march tlio captive chief was given a place und a blanket beside the campiiro with a guard of six citizens nnd nn equal number of regulars. Lieutenant French made the squad quite u speech. He said that it was beneath the dig nity of nn American soldier to maltreat n captive fee and that abuse of Flotow would probably result in his reduction to the ranks or complete dismissal , but to allow a prisoner to escape was an ineffaceable blot on the honor of the army. " 1 charge you , " said the ofUeer , "to treat the big Injun with all the con sideration duo n prisoner of war. but if bo makes n move shoot him down without hesita tion. You may kill him , but let there bo no escape. " It was pretty well understood among the men that they were to put Flotow out of the way before daylight. About 11 o'clock the camp was pretty quiet. A fun-loving veteran who had been with Grant In the Wilderness nnd who had fought Indians on the Platte , jabbed his bayonet into the lire and lot It como to n wnile heat. Flo- tow was silling with his head between his knees and do/ing. The soldier lishcd hiii bayonet out of the embers with a couple of twigs nnd very carefully laid it across the sleeping chief's feet. In mi instant the red steel sank into the moccusinod.toes nnd Flo- tow , with a shriek of pain , Jumped high in the air. Five or six shots broke the 'stillness , ntid the deail body of a red-skinned llund fell across the camp fire. The corpnral of the guard reported that the prisoner had made a wild jump us though to break for the bushes , and Lieutenant French complimented the men on theirlldelity. Flotow's remains were placed on a horse mid brought to Itawlins , where his grave U still pointed out to visitors. CHANGn7 > K TIM 13. "Hock iHlunil lloiite.
