Stocks There was a Blight reaction in the
stock market to-day , but prices were again
bid up in the nUrrnoon so that the loss was
recovered ami the final prices in moat casca
this evening wore fractionally higher than
closed yesterday. During the first hour the
market won dull nnd drooping , but with ono
or two exceptions the lowest pncei to-day
were leaa than J per cent below yesterday's
final figures. Shortly before 2 the whole Hat
became strong nnd more active , and before 3
o'clock the losses of the earlier part of the
day were all recovered , with very few ex-
captions , nnd price * were higher in most cast a
by n small fraction than opened. All Bo-
called Gould stocks were remarkably dull and
responded feebly to the afternoon advance ,

The Good Old-llinca

who arc longing for tbo good old times ,
don't remember much about the good old
times , " oaid a well-known Ornngo county
fanner o ? this town. " 1 can remember
when wo used to haul our grain , butter ,
pork and rgga nil the way to Nowbnrg ,
goliig ono day and coming back the noxt.
\Vo generally got 15 cents a huahol for
oate , and 10 cents a pound for butter.
Sovonty-fivo cents a bushel for wheat was
a fancy price. If wo gtt 0 or 8 cents n
dozen for eggs wo thought wo were doing
well. Nice corn-fed pork , dressed , wo
carried It to market for $2 a
hundred. The .butter wo put on the
market in thoao days was the gcnulno
Orange county article , yellow us gold and
liard as a walnut. 1 have cold tubful
ifter tubfnl of butler nt 10 cents a pound
that would net mo 75 cents easy If I had
it or nny llko It to nail now. That was
before the Erie railway came through
icro nnd pnt us np to selling our milk in
stead of making it Into butter. Wo
lidn't have any limo-kcpt eggs to sail In
; hcso days , either. As for UXOB , I paid
$10U $ for my farm of 100 acres when I
irra getting 10 cents n pound for butter.
3n the BBIUO farm now I p.iy § 42.50 , and
[ have sold my entire dairy of milk for
what is equal to more than three times 10
couta n pound for butter. There is a
; oed deal of humbug in this mourning
after the good old days , and I know It.

Col. John A. Washington , who had In-
icrited Mount Vernon and sold It to the
Jndies' association , was well known In
ho eocial circles of the city whlca bore
; ho uamo of his distinguished ancestor.
So accepted a commission In the confed-
srato army early in the war , and was
dlled In September , 1801 , whllo out on
i rcconnalesinco with three other officers.
Secreted In a bush by the roadside were
a number cf the 17th Indiana reclment ,
and as Washington nnd his companions
a mo up the road the Indiana boys nroao
'rom their place of concealment nnd fired.
Washington fell from his horse on the
irat round , having received three bullets ,
; wo of which passed entirely through his
3o3y , entering at the right breast ; an-
> thec of the quartet wai nleo hit , but the
; wo remaining unhurt managed to got
ilm away by supporting him on his horse.
The body of Washington waa conveyed
; p thn quarters of CoL Waggoner. Ho
ivcd for the space of half an hour , and
n over spoke save to utter oneo : "Oh ,
my Godl" The next dny his body waa
lent to the rebel camp under a HSR of
race. In the pockets of Washington
were found 8100 In United States gold
currency and n splendid gold watch. His
dress was now and of the most elegant
