At the beginning of every year Mr. W.
II. Vitndurbilt makes it an invariable cus
tom to take a careful inventory of his
immense property. _ Ilia strong boxes
are then opened , their contents counted ,
and from the total the prnlit for the year
is reckoned. In January , 1883 , ho told
an mtimirto friend , who had dined with
him that day. that ho was worth $191 , *
000,000.
"I believe I am. " said Mr. Vanderbilt ,
"the richest man in the world. In En
gland the Duke of Westminister is said
to bo wortli $200,000,000 , but it is
mostly in lands and houses. It dees not
yield him 2 per cent. A year from now
I shall bo worth moro than $200,000,000 ,
and will have nn income c < nml to G per
cent on that amount. "

A few days ago Mr. Vanderbilt sent

the czar's peculiar handwriting. It was
Jilted January 15 , 1884 , and was evident
ly his last balance sheet , which by over
sight had been folded inside another
paper. Of course the secret could not be
kept nnd the figures reached The Jour
nal. An error or two may have crept in
on their travels , but in substance they
tell tho'followiug :
Mr. Vanderbilt has registered in hid
name and in coupon bonds , $54,000,000
in 4 per cents , maturing in 1907. He
has .atoly added to those $4,000,000 in
O.V per conto and yet retains n triilo over
$1,000,000 in C per cents. The 4 per
cents uro worth 124 , and the market value
wf his governments to-day is $70,580,000.
But the bulk of the wealth of the king
of millionaires is invested in railroad se
curities. Ho holds 240,000 shares of the
Michigan Central stock , 300,000 shares
of the Northwestern , including 80,000 of
the preferred stock , and n block of
Omaha , 200,000 shares of Lake Shore
andi20,000 ; shares of Now York Central.
Besides this are similar amounts in a
score of other stock , among which nre
Ruck Island , of which ho hold 29,000
shares , and lackawanna , where the to
tal was 20,000 "f the others lie had in
all 21,840 ; a grand total of 930,840 shares
of stocks.
Of various railroad bonds there was an
aggregate of $22,120,000. nnd of state
and city bonds , $3,200,000. In miscel
laneous securities , manufacturing stocks
and mortgages the sum of about $2,000-

Reckoning at yesterday's prices tno

Thus every day they earn for him $28-

added to his hoard. Besides this ho cal
culates to aiako $2,000,000 every year by
fortunate sales. His reinvestments last
year , ho calculates , did this.
This rich man lives well but not lavish
ly , Last year his ordinary expenses , he
stated recently , were but a trifle over
$200,000. In this is not included such
luxuries as his great ball , on which ho
expended $40,000. His attire is modest ,
and does not indicate a Crouaus by any
muans. Mrs. Vanderbilt , too , although
dressing richly , is uy no means extrava
gant , iifthough her diamonds cost her
lord $150,000
Since Mr. Vanderbilt made out his
balance sheet some unimportant changes
have I eon made in his investments. He
has d'sposod of some of his Lnko Shore
stock. Lost week a firm of his brokers ,
Messrs. Barton , Davis & Minor , were
largo buyers of the Rock Island , taking
in ono day 9,830 shares. Since then it
has not been possible to dispose of any
quantity of this except at considerable
concessions. In his Michigan Central
corner ho altered also the figures of this
took. The chimgo is merely an increase
of his holdings of railroad securities at
the expense of his loans and surplus in
come , for the czar does not keep a largo
bank account. Everything must boar
interest , ho believes. (
