Speculation nt the Stock exchange during the early hours of business was quiet and strong , nnd the changes comparatively slight. Hock Island wns the feature , advancing tol5 against 123J at the close yesterday. In the afternoon Louia\lllo & Nashville , Union Pa cific and Western Union wore bought freely. A loading boar in Union Paclfiu attempted to cover , but the stock ran up so rapidly from $1 $ to 83 | that tha boars secured only a\ory email amount. Western Union stocks showed vurked strength , Tlio shares mentioned 01- ettod a favorable influence on the general list , and higher prices wore recorded all nround. THE WEEK IN CHICAGO. Special Dispatch to THE BEE. CHICAOA , February 15. Board of trade markets have ruled active and irregular dur ing the week. Prices of grain have coered a range of 3@Hc , closing to-night at the lowest limit. Speculation was very large , and while mainly on local account the supply of orders from outside was liberal. The main features of coin and wheat were the covering of the shorts of each , a slight decline and the taking of profits by the longs on every rally. Trad ing wiw largely of a scalping character , deals with that intent ranging from 5,000 to 3,000- 000 bushels. There is a material and con stant decrease reported in the visible supply , and the demand for export and home con sumption is steadily increasing. The prevail ing opinion on 'change la undeniably bullish , and it la generally remarked that outside sup- yport alone is needed to make higher prices a certainty. Provisions were steady. Pork rose about TOc , afterwards declining slightly , and lard proportionately. The clique under provisions haa dropped part of its load , Tha present -high prices appear to be sustained by scarcity and dearness of hogs. The supply is entirely inadequate , the packing season terminates two weeks hence , and the total product is .greatly . below that of laat year. 1 Dry goads are active for the season , prices buoyant and higher , and a further rise apt - | t > e.ira not improbable , especially in woolens. Groceries are steady and going off well. Boot } and shoef , clothing and millinery report improved conditions. A good sign that idle capital is searching for investment is the incorpoiation of many now manufacturing enterprises. Heal estate jirojecta especially are numerous , Inrgo and popular. Banks are discounting readily at \orylowrates. The story that certain Now Vork banks proposed sending gold to Europe to loan because the London rate is higher U uontradlctod. The demand for bonds and good personal securities is largo as over. Al together the financial situation is very cheer ing nnd s the year grows older every sign appears of UK being prosperous and Ihely. QHA1N AND 1MIOV1SIONS. CHICAGO PKODCOE.
