Stocks The market opened firm and in the
first few minutes' business miccs advanced
i to 1J per cent , liefuro tlio first call North-
crn Pacific preferred broke 2 per coat to 50 ,
and the renoral list i to Ig per cont. Toward
midday a steadier tone pi availed , but after
1 o'clock the market became weak and demor
alized and Union Pacific dropped 4 $ per cent
to 70 , Missouri Pacific 3J to 8Gj | , St. Paul 2 to
91 | , Western Union 1 to 73 | . A dicllno was
brought about by rumors that Gould wan
seriously ill and that tha Union Pacific's an
nual ropsrt would make a poor showing , b\it
the decline wai materially assisted by the
continued liquidation for accounts of many
firms which will dissolve with the close of the
year. Tlio number of tli' sQ cliangoi was
greater to-day than over before. A heavy
decline in prices wo Konod mareins and a
great many small folders were forced to soil ,
which also had „ depressing influence on the
market. I ate in the aftarnoon speculation
assumed a steadier tone aud there wa a rally
of i to li per contjjin Union Pacific. The
market closed irregular , but in the main
weak. As compared with Saturday's closing ,
prices are J to ! } per cent lower , except for
Oregon Transcontinental , Oregon Navigation
and Kansas & Texas , which were J to 3 per
ccut hipher.
