"It's all very well , strangers , for

Only gals shoot-birds out my way. "
' suppose you , have much l rger

stander , who had been telling ho r be
bagged some robblna over in Jersey in
the fall of ' 60.
"Now you're Ulking Ifingnage.
B'ars , bufialos , elephants , camels , gi

tigers year afore last that would make
you fellers weep with latter fer to see
'em , and people come fer a thousand
mile to see my coral o' polar b'ars ,

' Won't you take a little some
thing ! " aaked a man who had thereto
fore paralyzed the mob with wild duck
stories.
"You might stir a little sheet light-
nin' into come assafedtty , and gimme
a squirt o' vitriol into it , " observed
the stranger. "I'm accustomed to
powerful stuff , but I got hurt in a
seal fight , and hev to drink pooty
light now. "
"Tell us about it ! " chorused the
mob.
mob.The
The stranger sipped in silence a
moment , and then opened up : "You
see , the elephants bad been stealin'
my hens for some time , and I jest seta
a trap for 'em ; I bought a steamboat
and took off her hog chains for a slip-
noose , and fastened one end around a
hole about a quarter of a mile thick ;
I knotred for aartin that no doggoned -
goned elephant could start that ; then
I put an ostrich that * my daughter
had killed oa her way from echool
in the loop , and went to bed ; about
4" o'clock in the mcrning I heard a
row and found I'd got a buck seal in
the trap : he showed fight and I went
fur him , and for nearly a week It was
hard to tell which had the b.at of it ;
finally , I drowned him , and oat o'
that seal I got 'leven hundred bir'rls
o' ile and ( nigh onto a sqnar mile n'
skin , good fur , and worth § 10 a yard ,
but it crippled me financially. "
"How ? " dominded a breathlrus
listener.
"In the f 033 thet yer seal knocked
over my house and bu'ldin's and lore
up my arable Bile clear to bid rock.
Conldn't plant a thing. "
"Won't you try another drink ? "
asked a sympathizer.
"GImmo a little powered sulphur
and half a dozen red peppers in some
nitro-Rlycerine , will yer ? Doctor tays
I got to be keorful for a month or six
weeks. I got squar' , though , " he
continued. " "I kirn out ahead.
When I Rot to open thet ostrich L.
found a .fourteen acre farm , well
stocked and watered , egty-two ! miles
o' barb wire fencin' , three hundred
ton o' tiay and a Baptist church , all in
good repair , only the steeple was a

stranger. "
"Did you ever ijet the elephants ? "
inquired an Oyster Bay man , who
claimed to have walked over to Great
South Beach on the backs of a echoal
of bine-fish.
"Only nine of 'em. Only nine or
ten of 'em , stranger. I started a
sewin' circle in the church , and when
the elephants heerd the cacklln * they
thought It was chickens , and I got
eight thousand pounds of ivorybesides
six pounds that waa on gold plates

"Won't you try something morv ? "
queried an Eigle rrporter , who had
skirmished around tao outside of the
crowd during the relation of thea'o

"Jest drop atablespoonfnl of prcsaic

goin' heavy , I have got ecma business
this afternoon. I came down for a
Catling gun to see if I can't git some
o' them eight-eyed lions that's been
stealin * whales out o' my acquarlnm.
My eld smooth bore cannon busted
tha other day under a chaage of cook
stoves the baby had rammed to kill a
sea sarpint which was stealin' milk
from a pet cow he had been trainin' ,
and the discharge basted tha uscfnl-

want to git home pooty early , 'causa a

"Where do you live ? " asked The
Eagle man. "Where's your home ? "
"lam naturally a Nevada man , "
replied the stranger , "but It la too

and retired.

Protection for Home-made Storks ,
Chicago Tribune.
The fimila sex , as atrpresent con
stituted , , may ba divided inlo two
comprehensive classes viz : women
who paint and women who paint chi
na. The Utter class may be subdivided
into women who , ior some inscrutable
reason , paint soup-dishes and butter-
bowls , women who paint plaques with
gaunt storks engaged in one legged
reflection upon colossal frrga several
miles away ; women who paint tiles
with eui'floTCors ' which are Catherine
wheels and with elm trees growing in
firwer-pits ; women who paint fans on
fistirons ; and women who paint Gir-
gmtaua monsf.rcsil.tes upon screen ? ,
blue owls upon pink trees , green
ships sailing upon yellow seas ,
cat-tails growing in deserts , and
morbid Japanese women envel
oped in patchwork dolmans. Thi ?
latter class ot women who paint things
have recently been brought into close
relations with the Untied States
supreme court and the treasury de
partment. Tha story Is brief but
touching. It seems that some one at
tempted to brine into New York a lot
of plates with pictures on them invoiced -
voiced as cblnaware , wj h tbe foul
intent of defrauding the revenue by
paying only the duty that would bo
collected for ordinary wash-bowls and
stone jugs thet have never baen trans
formed into symphonies of color by
the esthetic young woman. The cus
toms officers seized and held the sym
phonies , and the case went into litiga
tion. The lower court was esthetic in
its 7iewr , and had evidently been
trained at homo to distinguish be
tween a Kioto atcrk and a Kankakes
swamp heron , knew a dado from an
intermediate , and had honestly striven
to so conduct itself that it should be
worthy of the andirons which Its wifa
had raked out of h r grandmother's
gurot.t Consequently tt bald broadly
that tha value of pictures painted by
hsnd depended upon the skill of the
particular'artist wac painted them.
In crurae of time the caaa went into ,
the supreme court of the Uultefl
States , and the venerable ( oKljgentle-
men who compote that august body ,
having no blasted esthetic neu-
sense about them , no sentimental
pining for stork * , devil - fisb
grub-worms , dragons , and other mon-
etroaities that now form the staple of
modern art , acd who cm't tell a sym
phony in cjlor from a page out of tha
Nibelungen Trilogy , deliberately sat
down upon the whole tning and held
that no amount of paiutlr g upon china
conld mike it anything bat china ;
consequ'nlly , that painted plates , no
matter how nioely they are paiufsd ,
are onlf plates , and only as aush are
dutiable. Under this rule they be"-
come decorated china or porcelain
ware , and pay only 10 ten per cent ad
valorem duty , Instsad of paying 50 per
cent ad valorem , as paintings on china
or porcelain.
Such a decision as this mutt be sn
iron which will enter the soul of the
young woman who paints things , for
it must naturally tend to stimulate
the importation of painted plates and
jugs , and by so much diminish the
protection ff > rded to home 'mado
plants and jugs. In this there ii a
great piinctple involved. Jt makes
no difference that onr young women
who piint things will grow whortle >
berries on oak trees and cocoanuts 01
ground pine ; that they will plaster ,
everything m the house from the
kitchen table to the old trunk ia , the
attiowlth evidences of their handi
work ; that they wi'l ' swarm every
ceiling with fl > cksot fans ; that they
will persist in having the most extra
ordinary storks chase the most extra
ordinary butter files across mountains
that are as big as 'Hick
ory nuts ; or that they will make bull-
rushes blossom out in water-lillee ,
and fljur de Us grow on running vines.
This is nst to be considered. Home
industry must be protected. If our
laundresses cannot get along without
fUUrons adorned with storks and
green violets , shall we ba 'compelled
to buy the foreign effete stork because
onr domestic stork painters cannot
compete ? Is onr homo talent , with
all its charming gruteequerip , its
cheerfully incongruous symphonies of
color , its pre-Raphaehtio naivete ,
which , with innocent and childlike
audacity , tpuros all formulas of , con
sistency , and revels in infinite
varieties of the most dazzling effects ,
to be imperiled because the venerable
old gentlemen of the supreme court
are not up in the canons of ' 'sulc'hah"
and the rules of decorative art ? By
no means. It is time for the young
women who paint things and for the
decorative art societies to rise and
move upon congress in a solid phalanx
and demand that it shall passan act
that will huiry these foreign pots , and
jug ? , and soup plates out of ihe
country , and stimulate our own dish
es to the maximum of high-art
creation There is ro recsom why
under proper protection and
encouragement our norna art should
not grow and expand to that degree
that oyery min can ie-wo his house'in
the morning as elaborately decora'cd '
and touched up as r.n Oriental arab
esque , and the pooree1 , humblest cab
in can have a stork upon ita wash
boilers and fans aud oat tails npon its
wringers and ironing boards. The
work of art will not bo completed un
til every laborer can carry a Limoges
dinner pail and smoke his Faience
pipe at night under his own h.iud-
pilnted figtreo. But this cannot hap

Sa-ed by.Her Calves.
PhlladtlphU Press.
The ntllllty of a pair of patent saw
dust calve * wn strikingly illustrate
oil Saturday. ' Shortly after 4 o'clock
in the afternoon a mad cur , pursued
by two perspiring policemen , dashed'
into E ghth street from Walnut and
caused such a flutter among the petti
coats as that locality has seldom , wit
nessed. Among the feminity that
was flouncing nlong was n
nymph who flings her shapely
lees before the footlights of the
Grand Central Theitre. THfs female
could not face a rabid canine , so she
bandied up her petticoats and made
a dash with tbe others for safety. Her
legs , which had served her so wejl
before , did not go back on her this
time , for the mad dog. probably at
tracted by the develodment below the
knee , drove his poisonous fangs'into
her stocking and went howling on
The ballet dancer , more dead thsn
alive , was dragged into a drug store ,
where an eager and anxious crowd of
men carefully examined- her -legs
Their fears were allayed , however ,
when the discovery was made that the'
canine had only destroyed the naw-
dust padding which the youngwoman
had tied to a lean shank to give "It
roundness and attractiveness. The
eager , anxious and sollcitious men
departed much sadder and a * "heap
wiser.
More sea Serpents ,
porulon TVcgraph.
Another serviceable installment , of
the sea serpant has come to Hand. We
do not vouch for it , but onthe , aur-
fac3 there is nothing very incredible
in this monster. Jt was not "tbefslza
of a hirrel , " nor had it a mane , nor
did it comport itself unbecomingly.
As a matter of fact , the thickness Vf
tha great worm varied from four to
nineteen inches , but its length was-j-
slx'y five feet. By far the most satis
factory point in the narrative , how ;
ever , is this that both ends
of a BOI ferpont have now been
seen. Hitherto only tLe bead ex
tremity has been reported upon , leavj
ing tha ultimate result of the creature si
completely a matter of conjecture
that the whole of the Ifraken camd to
be discredited altogether. In the
present casa , the successful fishermen * ,
finding they had "something" on the
hooks , began to haul in. They hauled
in fifteen feet of It and began to get
pnzzled. But they went on foe ten
feet more , and then their host was
full of it. So they passed up the
head end to the yawl they were lying
by , and paid it out like a hawser !
The men on board tied the fish around
the foremast aud aff a"g rjn , and at
last , with a flop , the creature c'imo.to
an end. It mcainred sixty-five "feet ,
and resembled nothing more'dre&dful
thai 'ra silver-c.i&le. " What waa hi

There is a go d deal of feeling
among the fsrmtrjc nirannityin this
part of Iowa over-Alleged outrages at
the hands of patent right men. The
trouble seems to originate from an in
discriminate ) Isiue cf right to various
persons for the same things from the
patent office at Washington. The
parties concerned secure an Interfer
ence on some generally-used , patented
article , and then send agents thrcpgh
the country , levying blackmkll on
farmers who have nnwlttinglyxottended
against the law. Tha favorite scheme
joat noij ii to levy tells on 'drive-
wells , upon which there is a"patent ,
but with which an Interference has
subsequently been granted by thepat-
ent office to another person. , Jit the
information comes to ns , informers
are now going through the'coantry ,
and-wbenever they find a WiellJtliBy
tell the farmer that he has been guilly
of an infringement upon their rights ,
for which he can ba heavily fined and
sent to prison. Country people , as a
rule , being in gieat dread of lawsuits
in the federal courts ; fall an easy prey ,
