LIFE IN LBADVILLE , A Colorado Missionary Tells of a Vestryman's Drinking Powers and How Chari table Subscribers Sud denly Skip Away. Philadelphia Press. The pulpit of tha Protestant Epis copal church of the Epiphauy , corner of Fifteenth and Chestnut streets , yesterday afternoon was occupied by Hjv. T. J. Mackiy , a missionary from Leadvillo , Col. , who delivered a brief but interesting discourse on mission ary lifo In Colorado. Beginning with a doEcription of the character of the country , its'pictnresquo grandeur , fer tile fields and pleasant climate , the reverend speaker proceeded to relate his experience iu the town of Lead- vlllo. vlllo."When "When I went to Laidville , " said he , "fifteen months ago , I found it a moat astonishing plsce. Instead of a hamlet I found a thriving town with churches of every denomination , five banks , five dally newspapers and braes bands at every corner at night. I was astonished and so would anyone else have been. The people of the Protest ant Episcopal faith were wor shiping in a small building , but I se cured the opera house , which is filled to overflowing at every service by earnest follows in blue shirts and with their pants tucked in their boots. They are made in tbo image of God , however , and have good hearts be neath a rough exterior. Laadville has improved solidly. I live in a house with two rooms , the walls and ceiling of whlsh are covered with can- TRS , whitewashed to hide the two-inch boards which constitute the body of the building. Thanks to the clemency of thu climate , my house is very comfortable - fortablo excepting when the rain leaks through tha roof. You will knotf that 1 am not com plaining when I tell you that I would net exchange my parish for the very bst in Philadel phia. My first vestryman could drink more whisky than any man in the town. Shortly after I made my appearance In the town my parish ioners invited me to a church sociable and upon going I was astonished to see the 'worthy people waltzing and dancing in the most scandalous man ner. To add to this there wore two streets whose entire length were made up of low dance houses. How was I to overcome such a gigantic evil ? I secured a hall , had the floor waxed , and after engaging a land of mnaic I lent ont invitations to all the young men of tha place to come down and have a dance. I instructed my floor manager , who , by the way , made lot * of money and skipped , not to allow any waltzing. The result was , that after enjoying square dances until 11 o'clock , ttto partici pants quietly dispersed. Some few said : "Wait till the preacher ROBS' , then we'll have a waltz , " bat I was too smart for thorn I carried the key of the hall , and did not leave until all had departed. Every other week I give such n sociable , and the results are remarkably good. This character of mission work would not do in 1'hil- adebhia or Boston , but it vlll do in Leadvi Is. It may seem un-j3odlike to practice such a course , but it ia the only way to reach hese people. When 1 first went out there tha con gregation used to applaud mo when I was preaching , but I finally got them put of such au unholy habB. Leadville is a great place for display funerals. No matter who dies the funeral pro- csssion is headed by a brass baud. When I buried Texas Jack , the part ner of Buffalo Bill , the corrode was headed by a brass band of 42 pieces. Leadville is also a great placa for titles. Everybody has a title. Cap tain ii pretty good , but to command attention one must bo a Colonel or a General. lam a sort of a General. I belong to five military companies and in my capacity p.a a militiaman I watch over my o aggregation. I have receiv ed hundreds of letters from persons living in Uhe esst inquiring after ab sent fathers , husbands , brothers and sons. Nearly every eastern town is interested in Inadville in this way. I am in need of $3000 for my church , and when I tell you that Laad- ville yielded § 15,000,000 worth of of silver during tbo past year yon will , no doubt , wonder why I come to Philadelphia for assistance. The ailver tl 3 mined was eent all over the country ; it did us no good , for in return the people only got enough to pay the wages of the miners. The people , however , give liberally of what they have. One evening I solicited money to enable me to pay the church debt and over$3,000was subscribed. Before I could collect the money , however , persons representing tiro- thirds of that amount had skipped. The place Is a perfect beehive ; people ple come to-day and are gone to-mor row. " Rev. Mr : Mackey concluded with an appeal for aid , which was supplemented by one from Her. Dr. Newton , both of which were re sponded to in a generous flow of con tributions. "Wnat Iowa Produces.
