The Ncbrosknn will be sont to any ad dress upon receipt of tho subscription prlco which Is ono dollar a year, or fifty cents a semester. Contributions aro solicited from nil. Nows Items such as locals, personals, reports of moctliurs etc. are especially de sired. Tho NobraBkan will bo glad to Irlnt any contribution rclatlvo to n gen eral university subject, but the name must accompany all such. Address all communications to The Nebrasan, University of Nebraska. Many studonts aro nequlrlnR the hnblt of marking "notable points" and other wise enhancing the use of books with In terlineations and the like. This habit certainly renders ono's own books of val ue for future reference. It should not however, be extended to library books, as they aro public property. Such prac tice Is misplaced diligence and good will. Tho object of course, Is to let everyone understand that a certain point Is worthy of serious thought nnd that some ono hud tho foroslght to discover It. If nil students should read nnd mark the points especially of not to them, wo dare say that our books would become whnt might bo fitly termed a crazy quilt. Undoubt edly these Interlineations add to the thought of the author and serve as n val uable contribution to the subject, but If the practice Is tolerated we can easily foresee the nbsurdtty. Students' lines of thought are as varied as their habits. And for one to point out tho Important things for hundreds of other readers. It is to establish a precedent of folly. The books nre for public Inspection and ser vice nnd the dnmngc done Is readily per ceived. Because some aro accustomed to carve their name In public places for publli notice, docs not Justify the dis figuration of the new books which nre constantly being ndded to the library Let us check this spirit of lawlessness anil It will be to our gain. The university has been gutting some Unenviable publicity of late through the actions of a young man. who signs his nami ' Jan Slansky. student of the s.ate university'. It certainly Is not necessary for the authorities of the university or any one connected therewith to make n public denial of Mr. Slansky's alleged claim. A reporter of average Intelligence would doubt very seriously after a fuw moments' conversation with the above named person, that he was an exnmple of a university stuJont. We wish to say most emphatically that Mr. Slunsky has never been nnd doubtless never will ij a rogulnrly matriculated student at tnls university. His sojourn In our midst makts him far from a regular student. And we regrot that the state press has not recognized or ascertained the truth about this mnttor, instead of giving the unlvt rsity such undesirable publicity. Mr. Slansky lias his peculiar foreign traits, and his oddities quite naturally arouse some peoples' curiosity. News of such character may be entertaining and In a dfgree instructive to homo, but we pre fer that such write ups. especially when tin environment of the university Is con cerned, should not be given trustworthy rellanee. The publie should understand that Mr. Slansky Is In no way connected with ibe faculty or student body and his troull fs and iroas are far from being the fruits of college atmosphere The reading circle of the state tench- rs association has adopted the North W stern Journ.il of Education as their ijflh la organ with the understanding that Professors Caldwell, Fling. Luoky nnd Wolfp. shall make weekly contributions In their lino of work. This is certainly a praiseworthy recognition of what our faculty Is doing for education. We should be sensible of the distinction that tills action earrles with it. espeolally w' en it comes from kuch an Intelligent body of people as the Nebraska state teachers. The latter aro sparing no efforts to bring the graded schools In close touch with the regular unlvorslty work, and such a step has boon a long felt need. It will be recalled by tho readers of tho above namo'I Journal that many of our profes sors have boon constant contributors of invaluable articles on the methods of teaching different subjoctt. And the state achorn only took official notion after due forethought. Wo do not hesitate to say that this speaks well of the heads of tho abovo departments, and will with out doubt bo appreciated by all. Tho university is no moro u follower but a lender In tho cnvtBo of higher education, and If tho signs of tho present ImlloiUo nnythlng, tho mombcra of tho faculty nro going to inuko thomsolvos Inlluentlnl fac tors In western education. Now that tho faculty lias made riioh n, concession as to grunt a hnlf holiday for Hold-day exercises, I: remains with tho students to see thut tho dny Is mado u, success both onjoynbly so, nnd llnanolnlly so. The manager of the track team hopes to present tho winners of contests, gold and silver ns first nnd second prlzos for each ovcnl If the- prospects nre bright for a large nttendnnco, this will undoubt edly bo done. Interest will bo nddod to tho oxnrclnv this yonr from tho fact that tin- wlni i rs nr to represent rho unlvor it y In i he IntiM-oolleglato contest. A newspaper dispatch says tho Rev. Timothy Dwlght contemplates resigning soon from tho presidency of Yale. Endowment bonds to tho value of $400, 000, belonging to the university of Illinois aro reported missing and It Is feared that they have been stolen by n defaulting of ficial. Northwestern university is to perpetuate l he memory of Miss Frnncos E. Wlllnrd by a life-sized bust of white marble, which Is to be presented to that Instltut'jn dur ing commenccmen; week. A bill has been introduced In the state Senate of Tonnoseo forbidding any per son to linger or loiter on any street, alley, road or lane in tho vicinity of a young ladles' boarding school. Neither shall any one try to communicate secretly with the Inmates of any mch InsJtutlon, nor loaf, lurk, and loiter whoro the Inmutes of such Institution are likely to bo found. Six weeks ago the secretary of the navy wrote to Mayor Brlnor of Princoton, ic questlng that a copy of tho borough be forwarded to him, as is hud been decided to call gunboat No. 13. now being built. "The Princeton." The seal is to bo used in making up a design for the gangway planks. In a corner of the draft on exhib ition, reasons for no naming the boat and a descrltplon of the design are given. Lehigh university has been having a reconsideration of Its honor system. Com plaints were made that the system had not been working well, so for this rwison a mass meeting was called by the presi dent.
