Qnge carries off the honor In the inatvidnal competition 0. X. 3Pull second OOO people present. Tho exhibition drill by the Varsity Rifles which hns boen promised for some time waB held in tho Armory last evening. It was enjoyed by an audience of about 500 which bestowed liberal applause updu tho boys whenever they executed a movement in a mannor deserving it. Tho hard drill they have been doing for the paBt three weoka was quite notico able and showed a decided im provement since their appearance last Ohartor-day The program was started by the appearance of an awkward squad. The men wore drilled in all the preliminary movements in cluding the setting up exercises. Tho audience did not see anything particular in their movements, to applaud, but wheneuer "uncon Biously" a cadet turned in the wrong direotion, it seemed for some reason or other, very amus ing to tho spectators. This was followed by a squad iwhich drilled in the extended or der, by commands sounded by the bugler. The cadets showed their knowledge of tho various signals by executing the commands with promptness and precision. It was then but a few miuuteB until the Varsity Rifles appeared, four sets of fours, arrayed in their spotless duok trousers: It was their first appearance (the duck trousers), and gave a natty and neat look to tho men, which is lacking in the regulation uni form. The small available space in tho Armory greatly hampered the movements, and did not allow the boys to do themselves justice. There was hardly enough room to got an oblique movement started. But despite this, the drill was tho best that has been put up by the cadets since the crack company which won the qup at Omaha, dis banded. Some of the movements' were extra well executed, with a machine like preoision which showed what was possible in the men. The company was commanded by its regular captain, 0. A. Ell iott. His commands, with hardly an exception, wore given in a steady, clear voice, and in a cool and unostentatious maimer. Cap tain Elliott has a strong voioe and an- ease in utterance which ap pears to very good advantage in his position. The final was a spell down in which all the members of the company took part. It was quite interesting- to- tho spectators, al though in many instances they could not hbo wliv nortnin men woro requostod to "fall out," MoBt of them stood up for quito a whilo. until caucrht bv some tech nicality. In ooming from the ngnt snoiuaer to trail arms " by tho numbers" about a dozon suc cumbed to tho orror of oxeouting this movement by two distinct cadonced motions. Oharlov Pulis and Harry F. Gage woro the two last men to stand up. Tho tormor was counted out on a very slight mistake, and tho honor of winner of tho spell down was awarded to H. F. Gage. When this was an nounced his fellow cadets lost no time in tossing him, whioh was done with a will. THE GLEE CLUB Will Appear In Lincoln About the First Week In May.
