Call it home sweet home ■Students examine all the possibilities of living arrange ments for their needs. BY LAUREN ADAMS While college life has a wide variety of housing options, most students agree it is the people you live with that makes the place home. University Housing Director Doug Zatechka said above all, the decision for where to live usually comes down to a social issue. "live wherever you feel you will be able to build a group of friends that you can count on,” he said. Zatechka strongly recom mends that freshmen and sopho mores live on campus in order to get involved However, Zatechka said he recognized the desire for students to live off-campus with friends. "Sooner or later we all have to live on our own,” he said "I can see the merit in that” Sophomore education major Carissa Koenigsman said she saves money by living at home because she is from Lincoln. “I’ve saved alot of money,” she said “It’s true that you have to try harder to get involved. If you become involved with a specific group it really helps.” Koenigsman said although she might miss out on sponta neous activities with Mends, she enjoys her privacy. “You don’t always have to be in the center of activity. You can get away,” she said. Business administration major Alyssa Terry is also from Lincoln. The freshman wanted to live on campus to make the col lege transition easier. Terry joined a sorority and moved into Gamma Phi Beta this semester. “Living at home was just too far away, it was harder to get involved,” Terry said. “Now I can get to know people better and it's easier to do stuff on campus.” For others, dorm life is the only way to go. Junior Andy Krejci is the hall president atAbeL “I’ve pretty much made up my mind to stay in this dorm for as long as I’m in college,” he said. An electrical engineering major, Krejci has benefited from the learning communities at AbeL Although having his own place would be nice, Krejci said dorm life has too many advantages to pass up. “Having your bathroom cleaned for you far outweighs hav ing your own bathroom,” he said. Sophomore family science major Sarah Pankoke said she doesn’t mind doing a little house 1^—— work. Pankoke lives in Love Memorial Hall on East Campus. The hall houses about 40 women who all help cook and clean the hall, said Pankoke. Because of the extra work done fay the residents, their housing bill is about half that of normal resi dence halls. “Originally 1 was attracted to Love because it was so much cheaper,” Pankoke said. “But after I moved in I was so impressed. This place is so cool. It’s just like home.” Other students prefer a closer location to City Campus. Junior Alia Nurmohamed, a psychology major, lives at the Selleck Quadrangle. “It's a really convenient loca tion,” she said. Nurmohamed said she also enjoys meeting students from other countries. “Tve gotten dose to a lot of the people on my floor,” she said. Freshman math and philoso phy major Mark Stigge said he has also made friends with people that he lives with. Stigge lives at Neihardt and said he has found the atmosphere to be conducive to studying. “It’s a better environment for studying, just a lot quieter than other dorms,” Stigge said. AbuN neips with choices JtSUNfrompage4 These pages outline the prin ciples of the landlord-tenant rela tionship as well as rights and responsibilities of a tenant The guide also offers informa tion on the university’s free legal services should a student get in trouble with a landlord. Heather Harrison, a criminal justice major, said the guide was good because it tells you “every thing you would want to know.” She also said she liked the supplemental information the guide provided. “I doubt that a lot of people know that you can call the utility company and find out what utili ties have been in a place,” she said.
