Spade will perform tonight at 7:30 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Before his performance will be an opening act, which Spade himself arranged to bring to campus. Spade’s performance is spon sored by the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska, the University Program Council and the Athletic Department Ticket sales were sluggish at first, but they’re starting to pick up. Close to 4,000 seats have been sold, said Joel Schafer, ASUN president Tickets, which cost $12.50 for students, will still be available at the door at the time of the per formance, Schafer said. Before Spade begins his act, NU football and basketball coaches Frank Solich and Barry Collier will speak, along with cap tains of the football team, Schafer said. "It will be fun,” he said. Schafer said bringing Spade to campus sets a precedent for the coming years to recruit popular stars. No matter what the final count of tickets sold is, Schafer said he viewed the event as a suc cess, even before seeing the per formance. “Other than Husker football, what other event do you see 3,000 students show up for?” Schafer said. “Whenever you bring that many students together for any thing, it’s successful,” he said. Rachelle Winkle, ASUN Homecoming Committee co chairwoman, also called the event a success. “If students are excited, it’s a success,” she said. Winkle said arranging for Spade’s performance has been a learning experience that will help the Homecoming Committee in the future. Because of this gained knowl edge, Winkle said she hoped next year the committee could bring another big-name performer. The committee tried to antici pate what students wanted to see, and this year Spade seemed a solid choice. Now Winkle and other organ izers can sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labor. “I’m excited,” she said. "Now we just wait and let it happen.” Mercy. Is that loo much to ask?
