University police warn students of magazine scam BY JOSH FUNK A group of magazine-selling con men that targeted Iowa uni versities earlier this month may be coming to UNL and police want students to be wary. University Police said the con men were believed to be headed west when they were last spotted Oct. 10 at a Des Moines, Iowa community college. “If it sounds like it’s too good to be true than it’s probably no good,” University Police Assistant Chief Mylo Bushing said. The group went into resi dence halls on the community college campus and conducted ‘ surveys door-to-door. Bushing said they targeted women. After a student filled out a survey, the con men would offer two free magazine subscriptions. Bushing said that after the student gave phone and address information and signed a form to seal the deal, the con men pres sured and threatened students to give them $40 cash. A similar scam was also reported at Iowa State and the University of Iowa before the Des Moines incident. Bushing said solicitors are not allowed in UNL residence halls, and students should make sure a salesperson is legitimate before buying anything. There are several things to look for when determining if a salesperson is legitimate, Bushing said: ■ Salespeople should not Selleck resident ticketed for alcohol in his room Loud music led University Police to underage drinking in Selleck Residence Hall early Monday morning. A Community Service Officer heard loud music and students talking about mixing drinks in a room on the second floor of the 8000 building around 2:15 a.m., University Police Assistant Chief Mylo Bushing said. When an officer arrived, he contacted 18-year-old Thomas Pullen, who lived in the room, and asked to come in, Bushing said. The officer found glasses with traces of amaretto and beer in them, and Pullen was ticketed for being a minor in possession of alcohol. No containers of alcohol were found. Two men receive drug, paraphernalia citations in Abel Ine smell of burning marijua na led University Police to an Abel Residence Hall room where a half dozen people were suspected of using the drug Sunday morning. After a CSO reported the smell at 4:25 a.m., an officer came to the fifth floor room and got permis sion to enter from a student leav ing the room, Bushing said. Inside the officer found five people, and asked them who had the marijuana. One man, Michael Bernard, 18, pulled out a plastic bag of suspected marijuana and a small pipe from his pocket, Bushing said. Bernard is not a UNL student but is from Lincoln. He was cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Bushing said. Under similar circumstances, a University Police officer investi gating the smell of marijuana cited a fifth floor Harper Hall stu dent for possessing die drug late Thursday. When the officer contacted freshman Patrick Ulrich, 18, in his room, Ulrich produced a pipe and a bag of suspected marijuana, Bushing said. Officers also found a 12-inch glass water pipe with residue of die drug and a homemade filter. Ulrich was ticketed for possessing less than an ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Threatening e-mail sends officers on search for authors Lincoln Police are searching , for the authors of two threatening e-mails sent to city council mem bers earlier this month after the city passed a ban on public nudity. The e-mail, which threatened certain council members with physical harm, were sent through the e-mail links on the council's Web site, Lincoln Police ChiefTom Casady said. Casady said that public offi cials normally receive criticism, but “these two really crossed the line.” If caught, the threatening authors could face charges as seri ous as terroristic threats, a felony. Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 475-3600. Compiled by Josh Funk need personal information such as social security numbers or permanent addresses. ■ Salespeople who ask for cash only may be questionable. P Legitimate salespeople should be able to provide identi fication and a company name. ■ Lincoln also requires door to-door salespeople to obtain a solicitor’s permit that they must show on request. ■ If you feel pressured to buy, don't. Ask for information and find out how to buy later.
