Web site gives students Career Services provides job information 24-hour access to jobs BY KRISTEN ELIAS Forget searching endlessly through the classifieds and don’t spend time mailing countless resumes to businesses. All it takes to find a job is access to the Internet and a visit to Husker Hire Link. Husker Hire Link, http://www.unl.edu/careers/ge neral/hhl.htm, is a UNL Career Services sponsored site that allows students to apply for jobs without even leaving the com fort of their dorm room or apart ment. The link offers students 24 hour access to job and intern ship listings and gives employ ers direct access to students' resumes. “It's very timely and allows a wider range of students to be served,” said Christine Timm, assistant director of Career Services. The link is open to all UNL students and alumni and allows anyone to search the web for businesses in the area or com panies looking for UNL stu dents. “I think it's helpful for stu dents to have a spot to go where employers are looking specifi cally at UNL students, and it provides a convenient one-stop shop for employers,” Timm said. t “It's very timely and allows a wider range of students to be served." Christine Timm assistant director, Career Services Linda Schreiner, project assistant at the Student Employment and Internship Center, said the link was easily accessible. it s nign speed, ana stu dents can access it from any computer,” Schreiner said. To use the site, students must purchase a registration packet, which costs $20 for cur rent students and $50 for alum ni. Once registered, they must create a login name and develop a resume. Registered students can use the InfoUSA on-line database to generate a list of potential employers in a field and also receive a publication focused on job searches in their field. For more information on the site, visit the Careers Services Center in room 230 of the Nebraska Union. read the Daily Nebraskan online www.dailyneb.com ■The university center holds career fairs and offers counsel ing and resume services. BY JILL CONNER Matt Ganow needed a job. Ganow, who graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in 1993, is researching career and graduate school options for his ftituie. He’d heard of UNL’s Career Services Center and decided to come back and give it a try. "They helped me a lot My field was education. They gave me insight to secure employment,” Ganow said. Ganow used the Career Services Resource Library, which provides information about jobs, and has attended on-campus career fairs as part of his search. Other UNL students looking for a job can find what they are looking for at NU Career Services Center. Career Services, located on the third floor of the Nebraska Union, helps students find jobs through career counseling, online resume services and career fairs. “There tends to be a lot of opportunities but students are overwhelmed,” said Larry Routh, UNL Career Services director. To narrow down these options, students can speak with a career counselor or take assessments to learn about themselves and their interests, Routh said. Students can walk in the cen ter and immediately sign up for a time to see a counselor. The coun selor on duty sees someone every 20 minutes. Last year, nearly 5,000 stu JoshWotfe/DN Janie Hartman, an accountant with SJSQ Consultants and Associates, interviews Jennifer Struthers, a graduate student, in the Career Services Center Wednesday. dents went to the career fairs, Routh said. Career Services is hosting its next career fair October 10th. The Career Connections 2000 Fair will have a lot of national representa tives from companies, firms and schools, Routh said. “For all students, any major, you name it.” Routh said. Students can also use Husker Hire link, the Career Services’Web site. “Husker Hire not only gets resumes in front of employers, but also gets students on-campus interviews,” said Routh. The fees to post a resume are an initial fee of $20 for one year and $10 for following years to re register. The Web site lets employers fill out a short questionnaire assuring credibility, and employers can search through all posted resumes. Last year, almost 26,000 resumes were sent out to employ ers, Routh said “I’ve gotten several interviews through diem, so it’s worked pretty well,” said Micheal Peterson, a senior computer engineering major. Peterson said last year his friends used Career Services and found jobs when they graduated. Their example urged him to use Career Services’ resources. Students who plan to graduate soon are urged to use die center. “A student who is graduating in December of2000, May of2001, or August of 2001 should be in right now, signed up and inter viewing,” Routh said Many organizations only recruit once a year - in the fall - he said.
