Huskerfans make presence known FANS from pagel Apparently many Irish fans did, allowing Nebraska fans to fill vast sections of the stadium and irritate Notre Dame Coach Bob Davie and many of his players in the process. Along with Churchill, junior math major J.R. Goodenough won lottery tickets and made the road trip. “It was an awesome sight,” Goodenough said. “I really appre ciate all the stuff they do here. The game was really an emotional rollercoaster, and it’s something I’ll always remember." Although many students enjoyed the tradition and land marks on the Notre Dame cam pus, including Touchdown Jesus and the Golden Dome atop the Administration Building, they were not about to trade football teams. “They have all the pomp and circumstance, but we have it right here where it counts” said Riley Peterson, a senior political sci ence major, as he tapped his chest, “the heart.” Two students who made the trip despite not having tickets were Andy Nickel, a senior biosys tems major, and Mike Butterfield, a senior civil engineering major. Along with a few other mem bers of their group, they watched the game on TV in a recreational vehicle near campus. “We wanted to show our sup port for the Huskers and show Notre Dame what real football pride is,” Nickel said. “We travel well, and whether or not we have tickets, we’ll come. I’ll bleed red till the day I die.” Butterfield also had no qualms about making the 10 hour drive east of Interstate 80 to South Bend, even without a tick et. “We’re all about supporting the Huskers and being part of the Big Red army,” Butterfield said. “Even though we didn’t have tick ets, we were part of the 40,000 Nebraska fans who showed up in South Bend. I look forward to the Irish coming to Lincoln next year.” The game was much closer than many Husker fans bargained for, and Nebraska fans felt the stress of seeing their No. 1 ranking and national championship hopes take a tumble. “If I had been hooked up to a blood pressure machine, any doctor in the country would have been scared for my life,” Butterfield said. He wasn’t the only one, said Chris Lewandowski, a senior sec ondary education major. “I about died during the game,” he said. “Heart failure. I’m taking years off my life here." As overtime began, tensions ran high. In her seat high above the end zone, senior pre-nursing major Sarah Reichmuth agonized over the Huskers’ fate. “Oh, my God, I can’t take this,” she said. In overtime, Nebraska held Notre Dame to a field goal. Then, after converting on a critical third-down-and-nine play, the Huskers won when quarterback Eric Crouch scrambled seven yards for a touchdown on a keep er to the left. Immediately, the tension escaped like air released from a balloon. The uncertainty gone, Nebraska students broke into ela tion. Many students embraced. A couple of students dumped beer on their fellow Husker fans. After jumping up and down and celebrating with her friends, Reichmuth was finally able to relax - but only in the fashion of the typical tough-to-please Husker fan. “We never should have been in this position, but a win is a win,” she said. “And I’ll remember this for the rest of my life.” SMOKERS? ■ men and women ■ 19 to 55 years old ■ nonsmokers ■ availability: variety of schedules available ^MDS Harris Together, We're Making Lives Better 621 Rose Street Lincoln vuva.mdsharns.com rcrt recruit htm EARN UP TO $725 Call 474-PAYS .
