Broadway panache, singular dance spice up Lied schedule BY JOSH NICHOLS Variety, so they say, is the spice of life. This year’s Lied Center for Performing Arts schedule is sea soned with cinnamon, basil, and a bit of curry - for some exotic flavor, of course. Judging by the 2000-2001 schedule of Broadway, celebrity, classical, dance and world music performances, the Lied has cooked up a meal for even the pickiest of taste buds. “There is a greater variety of Broadway performances this season,” Lied Director Charles Bethea said. “Broadway is the most pop ular single kind of event we pro vide at die Lied.” Broadway performances this season include “Ragtime,” “St. Petersburg State Ice Ballet Cinderella,” “Peter Pan," “Godspell” and the stage adap tation of the 1984 hit movie, “Footloose.” The Broadway performanc es will undoubtedly do well in ticket sales, but Bethea said he made note of other performers who may lure students. "STREB - Action Heroes” was founded by revolutionary choreographer Elizabeth Streb. The STREB dancers will be appreciated by those who enjoy pure dance combined with ath letics. “It is very risky, physical, relax earn NU credit with courses that fit your schedule Keep your options .open College Independent Study Part-time Student Program Evening and Saturday classes Enroll at any time. Bethea described the magi cian, acrobat, clown and dare devil as a gifted performer. Eric Larson, a senior com puter science, math and Latin major, said he has already put in what he described as a "huge” season ticket order. In his three years on cam pus, Larson said he has become a bigger fan of the Lied Center’s events each year. "They provide such a huge variety of entertainment," he said. "That is what is so great. You get to experience so many things.” This season, Larson said, he is excited about the Broadway production "Ragtime,” as well as STREB and the international music group The Chieftains. For most boy bands, it might have spelled disaster. But for 2gether, it couldn't have been more fitting. First created to spoof boy groups in an MTV made-for-tel evision movie, 2gether has crossed into the twilight zone from faux musical act to the real thing Well, sort of. MTV is putting the group back on television beginning Tuesday (9 p.m. CDT) in “2geth er: The Series” - a “Making the Band” meets “Spinal Thp” with a little bit of soap opera thrown in. The show follows the fic tional trials and tribulations of five boys who were handpicked by a man with an eye for good looks and semi-talent to create a boy group. (Read: boy-band guru Lou Pearlman and the cre ation of 'N Sync.) It's a joke that’s not lost on the group members, four rela tive unknowns and Kevin Farley, the brother of late come dian Chris Farley. To promote the new show, the band joined Spears at her recent concert in Irvine, where throngs of screaming adoles cent giris surrounded the stage. “It’s a wild thing to watch, to witness. I want to tell these giris, 'Listen, you're staring at a 35 year-old man,’ * Farley said in an interview before the per formance. “But I believe most people get the joke.” j I i 15 DRAWER CHEST 569 Cash & Carry TWIN MATTRESS AND BOXSRRiNJ^BXBJ I [FUTON
