Fall sports lineup features quality fare outside football SPORTS from page 15 events. It has put in for a bid to run the NCAA Championships itself. Time of playing: The team plays on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. The best you’ll get is usually general admission. But it’s orth it. C cssions: A full assort men i ad relatively cheap. Souvenir crap: Plenty of it. :her notables: Trophy case full of awards. T-shirts contests. Husker drum line displays for t’ e big maL at are some ti ,g to see. Soccer: Nebraska was one goal away from the College Cup last season, the women’s soccer equivalent to the Final Four. NU expects to be among the top-five teams in the nation this season despite graduating a good por tion of a strong defense. In the spring, NU tied defending national champion North Carolina. Time of playing: The Huskers play at Abbott Sports Complex, just north of 70th Street and Comhusker Highway. It’s a drive - probably quicker to go the Interstate. Look for the giant windmills. Friday nights, while it’s warm, and Sunday after noons are typical playing times. Concessions: Quality. Other notables: Occassional whiff of the dog food plant dur ing a windy day; stunning sun sets; if your car breaks down, there’s a body shop across the street. Basketball: It was a lean year for the men’s team. With the hiring of Barry Collier, things are looking up slightly. But the atmosphere of the Bob Devaney Sports Center is still sorely lack ing, at least for men’s games. Despite 4,000 fewer fans per game, the women’s basketball team draws a more charged-up crowd. Coach Paul Sanderford runs a full-court offense and is trying to bring in national pow ers. In three years, Nebraska has developed a rivalry with nation al-ranked Iowa State; both games came down to the final possession. Tickets are free for the women’s games with student ID. For men’s games, tickets got a lot cheaper to try to save Danny Nee’s job, so prices might go back up. Student floor seating fills up quickly, and then, they send you to the rafters. Time of Playing: Saturday, Sunday for the women, Tuesday and Wednesday for the men. Concessions: Yes. Longest line can be found at the Goodrich ice cream station on upper level. Runza and Fairbury hot dogs too. Other notables: HuskerVision, for those who want to watch it, and an NU walk of fame on the upper level costs a chunk of money, yet few people look at it. But’s it worth one walk-through. Wrestling: Turmoil was the password for the Nebraska wrestling last spring. The coach, Tim Neumann, was forced to resign ever allegations of under the-table payments to former wrestlers. Then a new coach, Mark Manning, was hired, though he wasn’t the preferred choice among wrestlers. So, yes, it’ll be a fun year to watch. NU wrestles in the Bob Devaney Sports Center and the Coliseum. Concessions: Usually. Other notables: Not that many people have seen real wrestling. Nebraska is often among the top-ten teams in the nation, and the Big 12 Conference (which only fields five teams) is one of the two or three strongest nationwide. Parents also can help their children adjust to college life. Zatechka advises parents to be there for their children and talk, to them about what’s going on in their lives. Students might appreciate a subscription to their hometown newspaper or letters and e-mails from family and friends. Some students have difficul ties adjusting to the academic demands of college. “Encourage them to get help the first time they have problems,” Zatechka said. “It’s easier to work things out at the beginning of the semester.” Tutors and academic support are available for stu dents having trouble with class es and exams. Often, time is all it takes to get over homesickness. “Tough it out. Wade through it,” Zatechka said. “Things get bet ter.” A Gift that \ remembers... •«m0k.
