Missouri Sports Information GUARD BRIAN GRAWER will help the Missouri basketball team against lowar State on Wednesday. If Missouri wins, it will be first place In the Big 12 Upstart Tigers, ISU meet for Big 12 lead By Jason Merrihew StaffWriter When Iowa State beat Missouri on Jan. 8, few would have believed a Cyclones-Tigers rematch this Wednesday would be for first place in the Big 12 Conference. But ISU and MU find themselves in a three-way tie with Oklahoma State for first place in the conference1 at 7-1. The last time they met, the Cyclones beat the Tigers 86-81. Since that loss, Missouri has been able to string together a seven-game winning streak over Big 12 competition, including a 21-point thrashing of Kansas. The Tigers, 16-6 overall, showed strong character in their last game, a six-point win at Nebraska. Mizzou had to overcome a 14 point deficit to beat the Huskers. The Cyclones (19-3) remain red hot since that January date. ISU has won six out of the last seven games. The lone loss came to the lb^-ranked Oklahoma Sooners in a 80-75 double overtime thriller in Norman. The Cyclones are currently ranked 17th in die Associated Press poll, while Missouii still remains unranked, but it is close to cracking into the poll. “Fve never been too worried about the rankings,” Missouri Coach Quin Snyder said. “I don’t think we’re a team that can make a claim to being ranked, but we’re playing well.” Missouri freshman Kareem Rush, this week’s Big 12 rookie of the week, has helped the Tigers greatly in MU’s last two games. Rush ignited the sec ond-half comeback against Nebraska with his outside shooting. “I don’t think we would’ve won either of the two games we’ve just played without Kareem.” Snyder said. Iowa State’s coach Larry Eustachy said he feels his star, junior Marcus Fizer, matches up better with Missouri than other Big 12 teams because of size. “We match up well as opposed to, let’s say, having him go against (Texas forward Gabe) Muoneke or Fizer hav ing to go against (Oklahoma forward Eduardo) Najera.” Eustachy said. NU women renew rivalry SWIM from page 16 NU Coach Cal Bentz said. The team that beat Nebraska last season was the Longhorns, and senior Helene Muller said that the competition with the foe from the South has become fierce. “There is definitely a rivalry there,” Muller said of Texas, “but Texas A&M is right up there, and Kansas is in gear right now.” “Physically, I think we’re all there,” Muller said. “We have saw some great swims on this team, and we’re going to see even greater swims.” Bentz said the next two weeks will be a combination of rest and mental preparation for the most important meet of the season. Lingering thoughts of the com ing Olympic Trials and the NCAA meet go out the window, Bentz said, when preparing for the conference meet. « “This meet will be our focus, and you have to place emphasis on con ference,” Bentz said. “It’s also important because you have to make time standard or you’re not invited to theNCAAs” Muller agreed with Bentz and even admitted that last year’s team may have approached the conference meet with a lack of focus. “The girls are into it a lot more this year,” she said. “You have to feed off your teammates’ swims, and the atmosphere makes you want to kill.” With it expected to be a tight meet at the top, every point may fac tor in, and Texas would appear to have an advantage in the diving. Diving Coach Jim Hocking says the advantage is far from certain. Hocking believes that sopho more Tamara Bernth may be a key Physics Laboratory Research Position Available $8.00/hour -10 to 15 hours week. We plan to be on their heels, and if they make a piistake, we can take care of them.” Bentz said that unknowns some times step into the limelight in meets like these, and he would not be at all surprised to see it happen with sever al athletes on this year’s team. “I’m sure there are several girls that will do that,” he said. “That’s kind of the way the season is designed.” Muller said she wanted the tro phy. “I’m a senior this year, and I want to win.” 1
