Intellectual property proposal discussed ByCaraPesek Staff writer The proposed UNL policy for own ership of intellectual property, which includes software, Web sites and recorded lectures, was discussed and revised at Tuesday’s Academic Senate meeting. Members of the Academic Senate voted unanimously to accept a resolu tion calling for revisions to the pro posed policy for ownership of intellec tual property at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “It’s a very serious issue,” said Miles Bryant, Academic Senate secre tary. “We want to make sure it’s as right as we can get it” The policy was drafted last sum mer, and two forums have been held to explore the proposed policy. At the forums, faculty members said they were concerned with unclear definitions of terms like “substantial university resources,” “instructional materials” and “device-like software” in the proposed policy. The proposal lacked definitions for terms like a fac ulty member’s “own time,” Bryant said. Although the resolution proposed no specific changes to the policy, it does urge revision. Chancellor James Moeser agreed the proposed policy was in need of revision and encouraged faculty mem bers to help. In other business, the Academic Senate approved changes to the Academic Standards Committee. The 10-member Academic Standards Committee reviews the appeals of academically dismissed stu dents. Since UNL admission standards were raised in 1997, the number of appeals has also increased. The committee will be increased to 23 members. Another motion propos ing changes to the commitee was intro duced Jan. 11 meeting. The motion proposed staff mem bers, as well as faculty, be allowed to serve on the committee. It also recom mended deans appoint committee members. Many faculty members were opposed to the inclusion of staff mem bers on the committee, and the senate voted not the take action on the motion until its next meeting.
