By Josh Nichols Staff writer Tonight, Abendmusik will bring to Lincoln a musical group with six lead singers. Yes, six lead singers. SoVoSo, an a cappella group made of six individual soloists and com posers, will play at the First-Plymouth Church, 20th and D streets, in Lincoln. The group, originally assembled in 1986 by renowned vocalist Bobby McFerrin, sings a mix of jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, pop and improvisa tional music. The five members from'the original group, which was called Voicestra, are Melanie Rath, Joey Blake, David Worm, Nicolas Bearde and Rhiannon. The group performed with Bobby McFerrin until 1993, when he broke away to concentrate on composing and conducting. They renamed themselves SoVoSo the following year and picked up then sixth member, Sunshine Garcia, in 1995. The name SoVoSo means “From the Soul to the Voice to the Song.” Each group member is a skilled soloist and composer with diverse cfll 'turaj and musical backgrounds. SoVoSo’s unique sound is basedin the art of circle singing. . *; The press release on So.VbSo described circle singing as “ensemble support for improvised solos through -interlocking patterns that are sponta neously composed.” Described as playful, humorous and unpredictable, the sextet also tells sto ries and improvises characters on stage. - - “They are a charismatic group Who has a wonderful time doing what they’re doing,” said Sue Buss, executive direc tor of Abendmusik. Buss is responsible Tor bringing SoVoSo to Lincoln. " She first saw them when she attend ed a showcase “of p'erformers in Cleveland. Performers at the showcase were allowed 20 minutes to sell themselves to presenters. That is all the time it took for Buss and others in attendance to fall in love with the group. Buss said she went to talk to the group’s agent about booking them here Where: First: Plymouth Church - . 20th and 0 Streets When: Tonight 7:30 Cost: $20 for adults, $10 for students The Skinny: Culturally and musically diverse group sings variety of music. in Lincoln, and 37 other presenters had already hired them on the spot. “In 20 minutes, they had no problem selling themselves,” she said. SoVoSo’s members have been hon ored numerous times for their unique musical abilities. Awards SoVoSo has received include the 1997 Harmony Sweepstakes and the 1997 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.
