Courtesy Photo Tommy Lee Jones plays Ashley Judd’s parole officer in “Double Jeopardy,” a film remarkably similar to “The Fugitive.” Suspense, creativity lacking in ‘Jeopardy’ JEOPARDY from page 12 Rapid pacing of Libby’s time in prison increases the intensity. Close up shots are used to intensify con frontation. Numerous long tracking shots track back and up from Libby’s close-ups to reveal the larger whole that condemns her. While in prison, Libby learns her husband is still alive and living with their son and her best friend. Befriended by two other women in prison, Libby also learns of the con cept of double jeopardy: A person may not be convicted of the same crime twice. Libby’s prison time is tedious and similarly painful for the audience. Countless transitions from Libby awake in bed to her phone calls establish her mundane daily routine. Six years later, Libby is released on parole to Travis’ “last chance house.” Travis faces his own demons and drinking problem while attempt ing to control the paroled. Immediately, Libby breaks her parole and other laws as she begins her cross-country search for her son. Travis is then forced to hunt her down. - The search that follows provides the hints of suspense that lead Libby back to her husband. Of course, you can conclude the film’s ending and each of the characters’ absolutions. Watch for a scene in a New Orleans cemetery that is a direct rip off of “The Vanishing,” both the Dutch/French 1988 version and the U.S. 1992 version. This scene, along - with the hints of “The Fugitive,” pro vide insight into Hollywood’s chain of creativity, or lack thereof. In a film more concentrated on determination than suspense, “Double Jeopardy” is really just fueled by Judd’s performance. It is Judd’s intensity, bewilderment and determination that add a sense of intelligence to “Double Jeopardy.” i— ■ 311 creates diverse new album 311 “Soundsystem” Capricorn Records Grade: A 311 has done it again. “Soundsystem” is arguably the most diverse album created by the five men from Omaha, known for their blend of rock, funk, reggae and hip hop. 311 released three albums in three years (1993’s “Music,” ’94’s “Grassroots” and ’95’s “311 ”), which propelled it into an internationally known powerhouse. In 1997, the band delivered “Transistor,” which debuted at No. 4 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart. In June 1998, the members began writing and recording “Soundsystem” but released a nine-track album featur ing favorites from 31 l’s early days titled “Omaha Sessions.” In November ’98, “311 Live” was released, allowing the band’s devotees to own a 14-track concert-in-a-box. On Oct. 12,311 will release its fifth studio album under Capricorn Records: “Soundsystem.” The album’s 13 new songs are a sonic stew combining the best elements from each of 31 l’sprevious albums. The first single, “Come Original,” is already in radio circulation and is the obvious pop choice for radio play. “Soundsystem” is littered with reverb, digital delay and danger effects, giving it an outer-space connection that 311 concentrates a lot of effort on. More obvious record scratches are welded into “Soimdsystem” than any other 311 release. The album also capi talizes on the multilayered vocal assaults of Nick Hexum and S.A. Martinez. ’’Can’t Fade Me” is the perfect showcase for all of these elements. Martinez and Hexum contribute tag team rapping to this high-energy com position. Martinez’s turntable mastery is fully evident in this track as well, tying the whole song together. The next track, “Life’s Not a Race,” makes a hard switch to salsa-rock. This tune’s lounge-style tempo finishes off with a flawless mixing effort by Scotch Ralston, the mixing genius behind 311. The most rewarding track from “Soundsystem” is the final selection: “Livin’ and Rockin’.” After six years, 311 has finally written a song to combat the energy emitted by the hidden track on “Music.” The song incorporates an electrified jungle dance beat with tight tongued rapping, consistent yet reckless drums, lightning-quick guitar riffs and characteristically self-assertive lyrics. 311, “Soundsystem” and the accompanying tour are “on a mission of positivity,” said Hexum in a press release, “to balance out all the bad vibes, the anger and the bad news of the world.” The album lives up to its wishes to build incomparable live songs and elim inate negativity. 311 has a way to turn a bad week good with a single swipe of its musical wand. -Andrew Shaw IF YOU ARE HEREBY I Nebraska! i;! nrranvv ar vmznrnBrai \ § East Campus Cl?
