Act brings honky-tonk to Lincoln GENTRY from page 11 tempo tune, debuted in Billboard Magazine’s top 10, and their current ballad single, “Lonely and Gone,” is working its way up the charts. Also fea tured on the album is “All Night Long,” written by Charlie Daniels, who makes a vocal appearance on the track. Their sound definitely isn’t pure country, and Montgomery isn't afraid to give it his own label. “We kind of call it hillbilly honky tonk,” Montgomery said. “It’s in your face. What you see is what you get. We just like having fun.” With just one compact disc out, Montgomery said the duo wasn’t afraid to play some cover songs in concert-as long as they came from one of its heroes, who include the likes of Daniels, David Allen Coe, Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and, of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers Band. “They say they’re outlaws and stuff,” Montgomery said of his heroes. “We’ve been doing the same thing for years. We call it having fun, but if they want to put us in the outlaw company, what better company can you be in?” Montgomery also looks up to his brother John Michael, an Atlantic recording artist. Both Eddie Montgomery and Gentry played with John Michael before he was signed. Still, Eddie insists that his brother didn’t hook him up with the record deal. “John-boy’s always there,” Montgomery said, “but when we did this, we believed in our music. If we couldn’t do it ourselves, we didn’t want to do it.” But even with a record deal, Montgomery says, not much has changed - except they no longer tote all their equipment in a ’73 Pinto. “We just like having a lot of fun,” wnwri iTvvivR The Facts Who: Montgomery Gentry Where: Guitars and Cadiacs. 5400 OSL When: 9 p.m. Friday Coat: $14 TheSMntiy: “Country’s newest bad boys" come to Lincoln. We just like keeping it in your face. “We ain’t never done nothin’ else. When you grow up that way, it’s what you do. When you love it like we love it, there’s nothing else you’d rather do. We love to keep playing and entertaining. I guarantee we’ll always be found in a honky-tonk near you.” -!-2---( _i_ Comedy acts venture to Grove If your in the mood for a laugh, you can kick back tomorrow night with three guys named Jabber, Swob and Kenny. The Royal Grove, 340 W. Comhusker Highway, will feature three nationally-known comedians. Kenny Howell, Jabber Gold and Swob Bob will be on stage Saturday at 8 p.m. The host, Swob Bob, is an Omaha native who does stand-up nationwide and has spent the last two weeks working in Atlanta, said Mike Wier, show organizer. The headliner, Kenny Howell, just returned from a stint at an army base in Germany, Wier said. Howell, who has appeared on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, is a rec ognized comedian from Los Angeles to New York, Wier said. Like Howell and Bob, Omaha native Jabber Gold is just returning from a road trip. He did shows in Michigan last week. Thanks to Wier, more national acts may come to Lincoln in the future. Wier, who manages and orga nizes shows at Cleopatra’s on 66th and A streets in Omaha, said he has another show booked at the Royal Grove in a month. Saturday’s event is a 19 and over show with $8 tickets in advance and $10 tickets the day of the show. “It’s going to be an awesome show,” Wier said. ‘99 Bikes On Sale All ‘99 bikes on sale nowl From Trek, Specializedand Klein, all come with life time free adjustments.
