Stories added to festival

Story-tellers will spin their yarns of
Uncle Remus tales of crystalline
cobweb chasms and all for the
adults and children that trek to the
Flatwater Festival this weekend.
Jackie Torrence, Roger Welsch, Bobby
Bridger, Bob Manley and Kathryn Wind
ham will all perform this Saturday and
Sunday.
Each storyteller sports a different
persona, and all but Roger Welsch,
Kathryn Windham and Bobby Bridger
are listed as "suitable for children."
Jackie Torrence: Given the title
"the Story Lady" by the children of
High Point, N.C., where she started
storytelling as a reference librarian.
Filling in for the children's librarian
one day about twelve years ago, Torrence
looked over the prepared materials and
realized that, not having time to pre
pare, that she was going to have to wing
it.
Telling an old story from her child
hood enthralled the young audience. ,
"There was something in their eyes,"
she said in an article run by the
Christian Science Monitor.
"Somethingf about the reaction of
those children that told me that was
the thing I wanted to do."
Since that realization so long ago,
"The Story Lady" has been reviving Old
English folklore, and seeing to it that
tales once told by slaves involved with
