Omaha and Kansas City are two
metropolitan areas within convenient
driving distance of UNL. This makes
them excellent opportunities for road
trips to urban areas for local students
and faculty.
One fun way to cool off on a hot
summer day in Omaha is Moby Dick's
Waterslide, located at 7505 D street.
For one low entrance fee you can slide
all day. Peony Park, located at 81st and
Cass streets is Nebraska's largest
amusement park and also includes a
large swimming pool surrounded by
sandy beach and waterslides. In Kansas
City, Oceans of Fun, located at 1-435,
exit 54, offers over 35 attractions in
cluding waterslides, a million gallon
wave pool, and an "adults-only" pool
with a swim-up bar. One admission
price allows use of all park facilities.
Also located at 1-435, exit 54, is Worlds
of Fun, Kansas City's internationally
themed amusement park. For one
admission price, one can partake in
over 115 rides, shows, and other
features. Watch your newspapers, be
cause these two parks often offer
coupons for discount entrance fees.
The Joslyn Art Museum at 22nd and
Dodge streets has a large and varied
collection of paintings and sculptures
ranging from ancient to contemporary.
In Kansas City be sure to visit the
Line Creek Archeology Museum at 5940
N.W. Woukamis Drive. There you can
see a lifesize display of village life in
prehistoric times.
Racing fans can find two good race
tracks in Omaha. Bluffs Run, located at
1-2980 and South 24th street exit,
offers greyhound racing February
through November. Ak-Sar-Ben, at 63rd
and Center offers thoroughbred horse
racing May through September.
Rosenblatt Stadium at 13th and Burt
Murphy Drive, is the home of the
Omaha Royals baseball team. Concerts
are also performed there.
The Harry S. Truman Sports Complex,
on the eastern edge of Kansas City,
features the nations only twin stadiums.
Attend a Kansas City Royals baseball or
a Kansas City Chiefs football game
there. O'Rourke's Lounge at 14th and
"0" streets in Lincoln sponsors road
trips to K.C. Royals baseball games
throughout the summer.
If you are near downtown Omaha or
the Old Market, don't miss Center Park
Mall at 14th and Farnam. It is a great
place to take a break from whatever
you are doing, featuring waterfalls,
gardens, sculpture, and an amphi
theater where musicians often play. No
road trip to Omaha is complete without
stopping there.
Near the park is a place called the
Antiquarium, located at 1215 Harney.
Stop in for a cup of tea or coffee and
browse through books and records and
art on the second floor. They have
something interesting for everyone.
You are bound to get hungry on a
road trip. There are many places to eat
in Omaha. One good restaurant is Joe
Tess' Place at 5424 South 24th, featur
ing Missouri and river catfish and carp.
Another place is the G.I. Forum at 2002
"N" street. It is a club for Mexican
American Veterans, but it is open to
the public.
The Howard Street Tavern at 1112
Howard Street in Omaha is worth
visiting for those interested in the
nightlife.
My favorite Kansas City road trip is
an annual event, a trip to the Renais
sance Fair sponsored by the Kansas
City Institute of Art. Located just east
of Bonner Springs in Kansas, the fair
offers Elizabethan pomp and pagentry
spread out over 10 acres. Hear music,
watch performers tumble, act, and
juggle, eat turkey legs and drink ale,
buy handcraft items. The fair runs for
six weekends every year starting on
Labor Day. Admission is about eight
dollars, but for those in costume admis
sion is free.
