Thursday, June 11, 1987 Glassy Eye Comic book guy gets help from two wholesome women and, for the first time in a Godzilla movie, a hippy guy with a headband and a thing for phallic symbols (he eats lots of corn on the cob and bananas.) They all go to a tired military guy who is so hip that he's 'Americanized' and says stuff like "damn" and "1 reckon." He calls out to Monster Island to summon Godzilla (Elvis stomach circa 1977) and Angorus, aspikypot-and-pan scrubber. In another first, Godzilla and Angorus talk to each other (Grandmaster Flash scratchy record noises: satanic messages, cats being tortured). Friday 4:45 a.m. WOWT ch. 6 "Hollywood Canteen," (1944) Robert Hutton, Dette Davis A real cornball WWII flick where tired, lonely, GIs can go to the Holly wood canteen and get pie-eyed and dance with Hollywood stars who are just like us regular folks. Robert Hut ton, who later ended up in.movies like 'Invisible Invaders," "Trog," and "The Slime People," stars as the hot dog GI who wins a date with Joan Leslie, who is just like regular people. Other regu lar people appearing are Bette Davis, Mommie Dearest, Ida Lupino (one of the few women directors in Hollywood in the '40s and '50s) and in a very funny scene, Peter Loire and Sydney Green street. John Garfield's patriotic spiel here apparently wasn't good enough for the House on UnAmerican Activities. Nice to look at but empty-headed as only the Warner Studio could make 'em. Worth a look though. Stoke up the VCR. Saturday 10 a.m. WTBS ch. 4 "Five Million Years to Earth, " i CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING CALL 472-2S8S $2.75 minimum charge per day on commercial ads. A spaceship is unearthed under Lon don's subway system and inside are dead aliens that look like grasshoppers. The ship has an energy field, that, when tapped into, reveals the history of a superior alien race that through evolu tionary experiments created human kind from apes. This is the third film in Britain's "Professor Quatermass" ser ies. The first two, "The Creeping Unknown" "Enemy from Space," are rarely shown anymore, but are quite good. Saturday 1:30 p.m. WGN ch. 2 "Tarzan's Desert Mystery," (1943) Johnny Wissmuller Weissmuller, the famous non-actor who could swim really well, gets the contemporary treatment here as he fights Nazis! Made by the RKO studio which was owned by Howard Hughes. Saturday 3:35 a.m. WOWT Insomniac Theatre "The Mummy 's Hand, " (1940) Tom Tyler, George Zucco In 1932, Universal studios released "The Mummy," starring Boris Karloff as Im-ho-Tep, a 3,000 year-old sweetheart, Princess Ananka. While the '32 "Mum my" has scares that are perhaps a little more cerebral, the four Mummy films of the '40s are well-made little thrillers, with the Mummy all the more frighten ing because the creature is simply a lumbering murderer who kills with lit tle or no motive. "The Mummy's Hand" features a script full of hokum that benefits from Zucco's ripe performance, great make up by Jack Pierce, and some nice sets. 1000 SUNBEDS. Sunal-Wolff. Save up to 50. The Mummy's best dialogue: "child ren of the night, they howl about the hill of the seven jackals when Kharis must be fed."
