The UNL library system can be an overwhelming
experience, said Kent Hendrickson, dean of
libraries. With its 1.5 million volumes and 2
million microforms, the library can be Intimi
dating if a person is not familiar with it.
To get informed about all the services the
library has to offer, Hendrickson recommends
that freshmen take tours of Love Library and a
university foundations course, a three-hour, non
credit class that includes a section on the library
system.
The first thing a freshman should know about
the libraries is he or she must apply for a library
card. This can be done at the circulation desks of
either Love Library or Cy Thompson, said Anita
Cook, chairperson of general services.
Library cards may be used at UNO and the NU
Medical Center as well as any of the 1 1 branches
at UNL, she said. Library cards are good, with
annual updates, throughout a students NU
career. The first card is free of cost, she said.
Replacement cards are $5.
Many services besides book loan are available
to students. Through the interlibrary loan depart
ment, materials can be borrowed from libraries
around the world, Cook said.
In the microform department students have
access to hundreds of journals, newspapers,

phonebooks, college catalogues and magazines,
said Kate Kane, library assistant. Portable readers
may also be checked out she said. The department
is located on the second floor of Love and is open
during all library hours, she said.
UNL is a regional depository for government
documents, Cook said. "There is a wealth of
information" if people cared to look it up, Cook
said.
The computer search department can aid a
student doing research projects. With access o
over 400 data bases, the department can su. .
students a lot of time in iesearching, Cook said.
The cost depends on the amount of material
gathered but ranges from $2 to $30 or $40, she
said.
Unions are refuge from academia
By Chris McCubbin
Staff Reporter
Don't be fooled, a student union is not an
organized band of undergrads demanding fewer
tests and higher grades. The Nebraska Union is a
comprehensive community center providing
amenities that help make college life bearable,
said Daryl Swanson, union director.
Swanson said the main business at the unions
is food service. The Union Square fast food
service will be replaced this summer by a Burger
King franchise. The Harvest Room cafeteria
serves traditional meals and the Colonial Dining
Room serves a soup and salad buffet. The East
Campus cafeteria is open to the public.
There's a bakery on city campus and an outlet
for the UNL dairy store that serves prize-winning,
UNL-made ice cream and yogurt. A dairy store
will open in the East Union this fall while the
main dairy store is being remodeled, Swanson
said.
Recreation is also a big part of the union's
business. In addition to lounge and television
areas, both unions have rec rooms with pool
tables, video and table games. The East Union
includes a six-lane bowling alley. The city union
rec center staff coordinates tournaments in pool,
table tennis, chess, darts and others through the
regional level.
Dances, movies, concerts and special events
are held throughout the year in the ballroom and
Centennial Room in the city campus union.
Every winter the Nebraska Union hosts Wal
purgisnacht, an all-night party featuring food
and entertainment in almost every corner of the
union. The bookstores in both unions not only sell
textbooks, but almost everything necessary for a
student's life, including clothes, candy, cards,
copies, and computers.
