Sorry Ma, forgot to take out my mind:

"No, really Mom, things are
going great. Really. Oh, yeah
school 's going just great so far
. . . My roommate? Uh, yeah, he's
just great too, Mom . . . yeah,
we re getting along fine. Just great,
Mom. "
As I hang up the phone, I look across
the room at my new roommate, who will
no doubt become a trusted friend and
confidant for the next school year, and
probably for the rest of our long happy
lives as well. My gaze casually falls on
the freshly shaved side of his head,
then ambles down to his tie-dyed Para
chute boots, pausing momentarily at
the Megadeth t-shirt just above the
torn red leather cutoffs.

The sign on the door said my new
roommate's name was Ralph. Ralph
didn't seem to be much of a conver
sationalist, but maybe he was just
kinda shy. So far we've talked twice.
The first thing Ralph ever said to me
was, "Don't use these needles, man, I
don't know you ain't got AIDS or
something."
That was yesterday, when we'd both
moved in. Today's conversation was
when Ralph said, "Hey, did I loan you
10 bucks yesterday? If I did, you can
pay it back now."
Even though today was the first day
of classes, 1 feel like I've learned a lot
already, even though I'm not sure what
any of it means. In Algebraic Philosophy
we had a quiz already. The only question
I remember was "Is there a God? (Show
your work.)" And tomorrow I have a five
page essay due in anatomical compo
sition on "If you had three hands,
where would the third one be and what
could you use it for?" And in economics,
1 have to read three chapters of "Dress
for Success."
Ralph is talking to his girlfriend,
Thistle, about the time he snuck enough
cigarettes into Job Corp to pay his bail,
and I'm trying to figure out where you'd
get pants like that, and why. Ralph
goes silent for a moment so I look away,
'cause Ralph seems kinda shy about
being looked at. I accidentally look at
Thistle, who's leaning out the window
naked and yelling at people on the
sidewalk, and I get embarrassed. She
seems really friendly.
Other than Ralph and Thistle, I
haven't made any new friends yet, but I
think two girls in one of my classes
were pointing at me and smiling, so
maybe things are looking up, if I can
decide what to say to them. And Mom
was worried that I wouldn't meet any
body. Mom told me to get a job so I could
have extra spending money, but I don't
really know what kind of place I should
go to or who to ask. But I see here in the
paper that they'll give you 10 bucks just
for some blood. I wonder how much I
have? Does it hurt? They sure don't
have stuff like that back home.
I was thinking about going to a
movie, but Ralph and Thistle don't
seem too interested right now. In fact, I
think they might have forgotten that
I'm still here. I don't think I'll inter
rupt them, though.
Boy, this is going to be great. My
hometown doesn't have a theater, but
Lincoln has a whole bunch of 'em, right
downtown where you can walk to them.
There's even one on campus, but I've
never heard of that movie.
All my friends back home said I'd be
homesick in two days, but here it is the
second day and I've hardly thought of
anything back home at all. Like Mom.
And her lasagne. And geeze, I'm making
new friends already.
I wonder what my major should be.
Mom says I should be an engineer or
