Gettin 9 a feel of the farm
Lincoln pre-schoolers pet a sheep at the Block and Bridle's
annual Kids Day on East Campus.
Audrey Weston, a special education teacher at Eastridgs
Elementary, said Kids Day is a concrete, hands-on expe
rience that students need. She said students spend the week
before the trip learning farm vocabulary in the classroom.

OCS (Army Officer Candidate School) is a 14-week challenge
to all that's in you. . . the mental, the physical, the spirit that are part
of what makes a leader.
If OCS were easy, it couldn't do the job. It wouldn't bring out
the leader in you, or help you discover what you have inside.
But when you finish and graduate as a commissioned officer
in the Army, you'll know. You'll know you have what it takes to lead.
And you'll be trim, alert, fit, and ready to exercise the leadership skills
that civilian companies look for.
If you're about to get your degree and you want to develop your
leadership ability, take trie OCS challenge.
Call your local Army Recruiter, and ask about OCS.

Tutor's tips dissolve science phobia
. By Ann R&siaisssesi
Daily Nebrssltxa tiff Reporter
Albert Eistein once said. The
whole of science is nothing but a
refinement of everyday thinking."
Many UNL science students
would tell you it's a lot more than
that, or at least seems to be.
Unfortunately, most of the diffi
culties students face in science
arise from the inability to relate
to the laws and concepts of science
and get a true feel for the subject.
"Every new law you learn you
must study in the context of
what you already know," said
Vyay Tatkar, a math and science
tutor at UNL's Educational Learn
ing Center. "You should try to
understand the interrelations be
tween laws and observations and
not view them as isolated facta"
Tatkar said it's important that
students be systematic when tak
ing notes in science courses. He
suggested students leave a large
left hand margin in their notes to
fill in later with key equations
and phrases to be reviewed and
referred to when solving prob
lems. "Take notes on ideas, not
words " Tatkar said.
When reading your textbook
you will come upon many new
terms. Tatkar said you have to
know exactly how to apply them.
"See what it's limitations are, in
what context it will work and
when it will not," he said.
As in mathematics, Tatkar said,
solving all assigned problems is
essential.
"When you approach a certain
problem," he said, "make a list of
what is given and what is to be
found. Try to develop a chain of
logical steps leading to the answer
and express these steps in the
form of equations. Finally, corre
late the processes you have used
to the concepts and principles
you have covered in class."
Tatkar said by fitting the con
cepts into a broad view and see
ing how observations in the lab
support these ideas, students can
obtain a feel for the subject and
dissolve the phobias they may
have for studying science.
