Indiana grabs leads wimless teams top pros
By Steve Harvey
THE COLLEGES
On a day when Mildcats were falling all over the place
here a Kentucky, there an Arizona the irony was
that the meeker species from Evanston, III, was the one
that turned ferocious.
Of course, Northwestern was playing those laugh-a-minute
guys from Minnehaha (3-4). Still, the Mildcats
had to pay for their 31-28 victory. They were forced to
surrender the Bottom Ten lead to Indiana (0-7), whose
defensive line recently finished second in the ballot for
the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize.
Meanwhile, No. 10 Notre Dame (3-4) dropped the
Bottom
latest meeting in its classic rivalry with the USC Game
cocks. Yes, another loss for Irish coach Gerry Faust or
a victory for job-seeker Howard Schnellenberger, de
pending on how you look at it.
Incidentally, Arizona coach Larry Smith, who said
earlier that the Bottom Ten editor should be "taken
outside and shot," actually lined up his team in a shot
gun formation against USC. However, when the ball was
snapped, the quarterback wasn't looking, and a 19-yard
loss resulted. The Bottom Ten editor didn't witness the
play. He was hiding under a seat.

good enough to shut us out."
THE PROS
With two NFL flowerhouses still winless, the voting for
the top spot was close this week as 70 Bottom Ten
selectors picked vanishing Buffalo, 64 picked Houston,
and three picked President Reagan as the debate
winner.
Buffalo (0-8) seems to have adopted a policy of letting
the chips fall where they may with its passing game. Hie
Bills chalked up four intereceptions against Denver in
their latest aerial circus.
The city of Buffalo hasn't had so much comic relief
since the 1969 Bill team, which went 4-10, but really
distinguished itself by trying to convert O.J. Simpson to a
flanker.
But now, let's switch back to New York for an NFL
update...Chicago has scored yet another touchdown to
take a 44-7 lead over No. 6 Tampa Bay. Obviously, the
Bucs are upset that their inaugural record of 0-14 may
be worsted this season. Now, back to the live inaction...

CRUMMY GAME OF THE WEEK: BayGreen) (1-7) vs.
Detroit (3-5).
THREATS, THREATS: The USFL announced that any
owner who divulged details of last weekend's meetings
would be fined $50,000. Or if he didn't have $50,000, he
would be fined 10 new footballs.
QUOTE BOOK: Redskins receiver Calvin Muhammad
says he was traded by the Raiders because Vith my
personality I didn't fit in. I'm kind of quiet." Only the
Raiders would be accused of getting rid of a player
because he was NOT a troublemaker.
BUT THE DUMMYS LESS THAN SIX MONTHS OLD:
When Baltimore cartoonist Mike Ricigliano took a life
size dummy of Dolts owner Robert Irsay to an Indianapolis
Philadelphia game, he was forced to pay full admission
for the clown.

UCLA at Arizona State (-7V): Bet UCLA. Ariz
ona State poor at home in big games and vs.
UCLA's class. Even seeking revenge, it is 1-3.
Colorado at Oklahoma State (-30): Bauer says
bet Colorado at 17 or more. History does have
some surprises. Colorado is solid on the road as a
large underdog and Oklahoma State is a bad
home favorite.
Georgia (-5V6) at Kentucky. History strongly
favors betting Georgia. The Bulldogs are at their
very best here, 70 percent against the spread vs.
type and spread.
Michigan State (-5) at Minnnesota: Bet Michi
gan State if under -10. The Spartans are on the
road again, but they own the series.
SMU at Texas (-7): Bet SMU as dog. History
loves SMU on the road in the big ones, plus this is a
road series.

Daily Nebraskan Senior Reporter
After two long months of train
ing, the UNL women's swim team
has something else planned for
this Saturday night.
Coach Ray Huppert's team is
scheduled to hit the water in
Columbus' new city pool that eve
ning for an intrasquad meet at
6:30 p.m.
Both the men's and women's
teams will compete at the meet,
which coincides with the ded
ication of the new indoor pool.
Both squads will be split up into
two teams, Red and White, and
the men's and women's team
scores will be combined."
Huppert said his swimmers are
looking forward to the meet.
The kids are all excited to get a
meet in," he said. TheyYe tired of
working out and working out and
working out."
Columbus' city leaders invited
the swim teams to break in the
new pool, and Huppert said he's
glad they did.
"It's a real honor for us, and
we're very pleased to be able to
swim the first meet in their new
pool."
Huppert said he's optimistic
his team will have an excellent
season. The Cornhuskers finished
second in the Big Eight last year
behind perennial-powerhouse
Kansas. With a talented bunch of
newcomers on hand to help some
solid veterans, the coach said, the
Huskers may dethrone the Jay
hawks. "I think this is a great op
portunity for us," he said. "Kansas
lost a lot to graduation. If we
keep everybody healthy, it could
be very close between the two
teams."
Four freshmen and two junior
college transfers are expected to
affect the Huskers' run for the Big
Eight championship, Huppert
said.
Two of the freshmen are swim
ming far from home this season.
They are Erin Hurley, of Buffalo,
N.Y., and Renee Coffman of Rock
viile, Md. Hurley should provide
help in the breaststroke and inter
mediate medley relay, Huppert
said. Another freshman, Penny
Stanek from Omaha Gross High
School, swims the backstroke and
and has great potential, the coach
said. Another promising new
comer is Christy Forsberg of
Minot, N.D.
Two California swimmers
transferred from junior colleges
this year, and should provide some
added experience, the coach said.
They are Nancy Stauffer of Los
Altos and Cindy Hampel, who
hails from Danville.
Top returners include Emily
Ricketts, a junior who won the
200-meter freestyle at last year's
Big Eight championships, and
Dana Powers, a sophomore who
took conference honors in the 50
meter freestyle. Redshirt sopho
more Shauna Gilmore returns
from a shoulder injury.
Susan Cashman, an outstand
ing sophomore who swims the
400-meter intermediate medley
and the 500-meter freestyle, will
miss the first half of the season
with a shoulder injury. But Hup
pert said Cashman should be
ready to swim by January.
Nebraska has a young team,
fifteen of the 23 swimmers are
either freshmen or sophomores.
But that doesn't worry Huppert.
"We have more returning ath
letes that have placed at the
conference level than we usually
do," he said.
The Huskers open their season
Nov. 2-3 at the Big Eight In
vitational at Lawrence, Kan. The
first home meet is set for Nov. 9,
when Air Force will visit the Bob
Devaney Sports Center for a 4
p.m. meet.
