Conferences and individual schools may
determine appearance limits for regional
packages.
The CFA-ABC plan has established
"windows" time periods set aside on
Saturdays for local, national and cable
telecasts.
The 11a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT time period is
reserved for local telecasts of CFA games.
From 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. is reserved for
ABC, and Saturday evening Is set aside
for ESPN telecasts.
According to the Sporting News, other
conference television packages include
the Southeastern Conference'3 $6 million,
1 2-to-1 4 game contract with Atlanta Super
station WTBS (Lincoln, cable Channel 4),
the Ivy League and Eastern Public Broad
casting Station outlets, the Big Ten and
the Nashville-based Spoils View that supple
ments the CBS package, and Notre Dame
and MctroSports.
The scrambled college football televi
sion picture had its origins in 1977 when
the major conferences formed the CPA
and hired former Big L!(;ht commissioner
Chuck Nelnes to lead the group.
. In 1031, NBC offered the CFA a $180
million contract to break from the NCAA's
exclusive contract with ABC. While the
CFA was considering jthe offer, the NCAA
threatened sanctions against the member
schools.
Earlier this month, Neines told a Con
gressional committee, "Facing that threat,
a majority of the CFA voted to decline
NBC's offer. But the NCAA's action, more
than anything else, fueled the now-famous
lawsuit by the universities of Georgia and
Oklahoma against the NCAA that even
tually brought college football to where it
is today."
