'Never Ending Story
pleasant fantasy tale
By Ilsrk Hendricks
Daily Nelumskait EtiSWrltsr
The "Neverending Story is a
Warner Brothers movie about
a 10-year-old boy who is ad
justing to the recent death of
his mother. Produced by Bernd
. Movie
Review
Eichinger and directed by
Wolfgang Peterson (who also
directed "Das Boot",) the film
parallels the mood of Walt
Disney's animated classics,
where good and evil duel to
rule an imaginary realm.
The story begins as Bastian
Bux (played by Barret Oliver)
escapes being "canned" by
ducking into a bookstore. The
owner of the store, after
questioning Bastian about his
motives, tells Bastian about a
magic book and cons him
into taking the book by telling
him not to take the book.
Bastian proceeds to school
to find out that he is late fora
math test and decides to cut
class and start reading the
book in the school's attic. He
reads of a land called "Fant a
sia" where an evil "nothing" is
spreading rapidly to destroy
"Fantasia." He reads of magi
cal creatures such as giant
blue-eyed rock chewers, who
dine on gourmet quartz, and
of bats used as hang-gliders.
He also reads about a young
Indian boy who hunts purple
buffalo, who Bastian identi
fies with, and is shocked when
he screams and finds his
scream integrated in the book
he is reading.
In the end Bastian manif
ests himself into the story to
save "Fantasia."
The movie has nice Ger
man overtones, apparent in
the development of the char
acters of "Fantasia". The
Gnomes and the Luck Dragon
look as though they could be
illustrations from "Grimm's
Fairy Tales," and like the fairy
tales, the "Neverending Storf
has a moral never give up
on yourself and never stop
dreaming: Thsre are no bord
ers of the imagination. That's
sound advice for audiences
of all ages.
