Paying for school, books and
housing can sometimes be a
problem for students, but the
UNL Office of Scholarships and
Financial Aid can help relieve
the burden.
Guaranteed Student Loan
(GSL) applicaitons for first se
mester will be accepted until
Oct. 1, said Larry Apel, asso
ciate director of scholarships
and financial aid.
Students should apply for
money for first and second se
mesters by Feb. 1, 1035, Apel
said. By applying early, students
can borrow money for whst they
already have spent on tuition,
books and rent during their first
semester, he said. Students
should check to see if they still
are eligible for financial aid since
the government has changed
the aid requirements.
In the past, students were to
have passed one-half of the
classes for which they registered.
But now, Apel said students
must pass two-thirds of those
classes for which they are regis
tered on the sixth day of the
semester.
Students who already have
applied for'GSLs for fall semes
ter can pick up their checks the
first week of schooL Pickup times
and places will be scheduled
later.
Chris Va&ge, assistant direc
tor of scholarships and finan
cial aids, said cash advances
and book vouchers will be issued
from the north doors of the
Centennial Room in the Neb
rsaka Union Aug. 27, 23 and 29
from 8:30 am. to 1 1:30 am. and
1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The last day for
cash advances and book vouchers
will be Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to
1 1 :30 am. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at
Administration 113.
Apel said that students re
ceiving National Direct Student
Loans (ND5L) can get their
checks in the Nebraska Union
ballroom from 8:30 am. to 1 1 :30
am. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept.
1 p.m.24, 25 and 26. Students
should fill but applications for
second semester NDSLs in Oct
ober. Students can pick up work
study assignments from Aug. 17
through Sept. 3 at Administra
tion 112 from 8 am. to 12:30
p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. said

Students can start work imme
diately if they want to, she said.
Apel said that, Pell Grants,
unlike other grants, are always
available to thoss eligible, no
matter when the student app
lies. Pell Grants are strictly need
based grants and the govern
ment is obligated to give them to
thosa who are eligible, he said.
Short-term leans from UNL
also are available for up to $150
without a cosigner and up to
$1,000 with a cosigner, he said.
These loans, which are based on
the ability of the individual to
repay, are six-month loans at a
9 percent interest rate, he said.
Demand is high for these short
terms loans during the first part
cf the semester, Apel said, so
interested students should get
an appointment for an adviser
as soon as possible.
Budget approved;
tuition to increase
over next 2 years
While many students were off
campus this Slimmer, the NU
Board cf Regents was busy with
the 1085-86 budget and other
related items.
The $317.8 million budget
approved by the regents will
include a 12.7 percent increase
in state funding and a 10 per
cent increase in tuition and fees.

will have to request the $21 mil
' lion from the Legislature's Ap
. propristions Committee in Nov
ember, according to a Daily Ne
braska July article.
The budget will provide a 10.7
percent salary increase for UNL
academic and administrative
' staff, and a 9 percent increase
for UNO and UNMC faculty.
Non-faculty employees on all
campuses will receive an 11,5
percent salary increase if the
1085-86 budget goes through.
Other expenditures include a
10 percent increase for library
acquisitions, $1.95 million for
academic and administrative
computing and $2.9 million to
bring the university into com
pliance with safety codes.
The regents also passed a
resolution establishing a resid
ency training program in den
tistry at the UNL College ofDen-tistry.
