The 1984 Summer
Olympics will feature a
wind surfing competition
for the first time. Local
wind surfing enthusiasts
have a chance to show off
their skills at the Second
Annual Funboard Regatta,
which takes place August
5 at Holmes Lake, 70th
and Normal streets.
The event, sponsored
by Lawlor's and KHAT
radio, is open to both ad
vanced and novice board

UNL athletes that qual

country's Olympic team
include: Janet Burke (Jam
aica), Reynaldo Castro
(Dominican Republic),
Merlene Ottey (Jamaica),
Marcia Tate (Jamaica)
and Dennis Wallace (Jam
aica). Burke qualified in the
200-meter dash and the
4 x 100 relay team. She
will be joined on the 4 x
100 team by Ottey, who
also will run the 100 and
the 200. Ottey is favored
to capture the gold in the
200 and could upset Ameri
can Evelyn Ashford for
the gold in the 100.
Tate made the women's
4 x 400 team while Wal
lace qualified for the
men's 4x 400. Castro will
dive for the Dominican
Republic in the spring
board competition.
In addition to the afore
mentioned athletes, UNL
will also be represented
by several staff members
at the Games. Gymnastic
coach Francis Allen, who
coached the 1980 U.S.
Olympic Gymnastics team
that boycotted the Mos
cow Games, will assist the
gymnastics team in a var
iety of ways, but primariy
will be the team's trainer.
Also working the games
will be diving coach Jeff
H uber, Chuck Pool of the
Sports Information Office,
and John Scheer, assist
ant professor of health,
physical education and
recreation.
Huber will assist the
Dominican Republic's div
ing team, while Pool will
be working as a press
officer in charge of assist
ing photographers at swim
ming and diving events.
Scheer will serve as a gym
nastic judge's assistant
will appear in their place this
