UNL faces two broadcasting options 'Ocean Rain'

The NCAA can no longer monopolize the televis
ing of college football games.
The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 Wednesday to allow
colleges to make television deals on their own. The
ruling could shoot down NCAA contacts with ABC,
CBS and WTBS.
According to Justice John Paul Stevens, the
NCAA violated the Sherman Antitrust Act by con
trolling the number of games on television and com
pelling the networks to pay a set price, which drops
if negotiated with colleges individually.
Before Wednesdy's ruling, a college which nego
tiated its own contract faced sanctions including
expulsion from the NCAA and being foridden to
compete against an NCAA opponent in any intercol
legiate sport.
UNL faces two options concerning television nego
tiations. It can either negotiate its own contract or
join a group plan.
"No one knows for sure what is going to happen,"
Tom Osborne, Nebraska head football coach, said.
"I'm sure the university will sit back and look at all
the possible alternatives."
If Nebraska picks the group plan, it could select
from several, including an NCAA-network deal, a
Big Eight negotiating division, or the College Foot
ball Association plan. UNL Athletic Director Bob
Devaney met Wednesday with CFA members in
Chicago.
Currently, Nebraska's only television commitment
is with CBS, a nationally televised clash with UCLA.
The Supreme Court ruling threw a monkey wrench
into the contact and Osborne is unsure about the
future of the telecast.
"I hope the UCLA contact will still be honored," he
said, "I dont know if the contact is void, but I hope it
will still be carried through."
Another proposed football broadcast involves NU
Regent Robert Simmons, who is lobbying for a silent
game (no announcers) telecast of every Cornhusker
football game on the Nebraska ETV Network.
Osborne said the new negotiating techniques will
not change much this year because the proposal
came so late, but it will affect the television ratings
this fall.
"It may help the ratings because it makes games
more attractive," Osborne said. "It will probably be
beneficial to schools with more appeal."
Many college coaches and athletic directors claim
the ruling will help only the athletically strong uni
versities and leave the weaker schools out in the
cold. Osborne said he disagrees.
"I don't think anyone wants to see the rich get
richer and the poor get poorer because that will be
bad for college football in the long run," he said.

perfect addition to any album collection.
And now here's something that belongs in the
unusual and offbeat category. Trevor Horn, for
merly of the Buggies, is up to his crazy antics again
now as coordinator of a grou p by the name of Art
of Noise. "Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise" ZTT Is
land was a product of this band which can almost be
seen as an artistic political stand against the indus
trialization of England and London in particular.
The album is even dedicated to the father of the
assembly line, Henry Ford.
"Who's Afraid Of..." is mostly instrumental except
for a few varied moans, grunts and shouts which
may be human. "Moments" is a song consisting of a
walk down a cobblestone street near a church. It
sounds like some sound effects from a late night
horror flick.
That is just one segment from the whole album.
The rest consists of all different types of noises.
Amazingly in spite of appearances, this is an excel
lent album.
