If the summer of 1033-84 with
Return qfthsJedl and Staging Alive
was the year of the sequel, then this
summer will make ICS 4 the sequel to
the year of the sequel.
Summer movie- goers will be treated
to part two of the Raiders of the Lost
Ark series in the form of Indiana Jones
and the Temple cfDomn (opening May
23 at the State), and Star Trek III

at the Cooper). Cannonball Run II
and Oman II prove that even bad
movies will get a chance at a second
audience.
But the highlight of the summer will
again be comedies. The most expen
sive and promising of the lot should be
Ghostbustrs, a $40 million modern
day ghost chase set la New York City,
with Saturday Night Live alumni Bill
Murray and Dsn Akroyd handling the
laughs. Behind Ghostbus&ersthe movies
to look for are:
1) The Natural with Robert Red
ford The advance press kits indicate
this will be one of the few movies aimed
at a mature audience this summer.
Still, even with Bedford, baseball movic3
are a hell of a hard sell. Notice the
abundance of oromotions.
2) Gremlins by Steven Spielberg.
Another in Spielberg's unique line of
science fiction with an apparent goal
of combining Poltergeist horror with
E.T.'s charm. Given the track record,
it's the best bet going.
3) Supergirl Nevermind that
the producers of the Superman series
reealed that even this no-miss series
could grind to a halt with a dumb
script and silly story (Superman III).
But apparently the producers have
found a story to wrap Supergir l around.
The movie, which stars an undoubt
edly gorgeous newcomer by the name
of Helen Slater, will be held until July,
after the Gremlins and Star Trek III
tffejun their route. That might be a
risk if the kids are a little bit special
effect blitzed and leery of a female
superpower by then.
4 Best Defense This is Eddie
Murphy's last training-wheel fib. Next
time out, producers might let him take
top billing after finding that he goes
over well with white partners Nick
Nolte, Akroyd and now Dudley Moare.
It's also due in late July.
5) Once Upon a Time in AmsHca
Don't be fooled by the title. This is
this year's ."epic," with Sergio Leone
directing what should be brassy, loud
and possibly unforgettable. Robert
DeNiro b back in character with James
Woods and Treat Williams as backups.
It's set in the 1930s, and it should set
well with people looking for a real
story this summer.
Meanwhile, the first of the summer
products are already beginning to ap
pear, or creep, into movie theaters
almost everywhere. While Lincoln still
hasn't got some of the spring's top crit
ical hits (These are Spinal Tap, Reuben
Reuben, The Stone Boy) some of the big
market summer releases opening last
Friday around town, and others are
due next week. Among that group,,
look for Firestarter with Drew Barry
more to be a better film than the last
Stephen King adaptation (something
about corn, wasn't it?). Among those
already showing, Brcakdance and The
Bounty show a lot of early promise.
The Bounty, starring Mell Gibson and
the directing of Dino De Laurentis, is
yet another remake of Mutiny on the
Bounty, but the all-star cast is more -than
enough to make a familiar story
fresh again. 5
Sixteen Candles is the last remnant
of what was the biggest trend last
spring. Teen-age sex movies. But that
really isnt all there is to this funny
sit-com on wheels. Molly Bingwaldcar-;:
ries a lot of sincerity into her role as
Samantha, who is lamenting her lack
of a steady on 'her sixteenth birthday.
But while she's chasing the school
hunk" (Michael Sehoeflkg) she's being :
chased by the school "geek" (that's the

title the film gave him), Anthony

A lot of the gimmicks are aimed at
that high school age crowd, but Six
teen Candle has a. bit of sophistica
tion to it that the uglier films of the
type, Porky 's, The Last American Vir
gin, etc. didn't have. The kids here
seem real.
Now on the other hand, while 'Six
teen Candles is playing at the Stuart,
Footloose still holds court at the Dou
glas Three across the street But the
crowds are likely thinning out for that
somewhat disappointing film arid go
ing to what everyone knew was going
to be a bad Mm.
Hardbodics is a shameless, faceless
and degrading 05 minutes of film cat
ering to Midwestern youth who long
for beaches with beautiful bodies and
unen ding sun. Top that off with a rock
- soundtrack, and ' you Have what ' you""
call a hit.
The problem here Isn't that it's not
fun anymore. Hardbodies, whose ads
promise-you nothing, is so numbing it's
not funny. The lead character is a shy
ster who cons three middle-aged beach
visitors to try to seduce the "hardbo
dies" who are the "pretty young things
at the beaches," by the scene.
"These girls only want the better
things in life the best of the best.
They want to be dialogued. You prom
ise them the best, and youll get them,"
says the main character at one point.
And, the film goes on to show that's
true - that except for the main char
acters' girlfriend and her two friends,
the rest of the women in the film are
treated like so many toys for the men
to play with. There's no chance that it
might even be a fair deal. No, these
women are just plain duped and out
smarted into bed by the men, and I
guess that's supposed to be applauda
;ble. Like the other Bogmeats before it,
it's just dumb and offensive.

MTV-style energetic show
; s Review By JONATHAN TAYLOU
Being largely unfamiliar with the music of the
-Thompson Twins, I accompanied some friends on a
three-hour roadtrip to Hastings just to seethe show.
We all agreed it was well worth the drive.
For a majority of the near sell-out crowd at Hast
ings College's Kiewit Gymnasium, "Home of the
Broncos" Saturday night, it was like being on loca
tion for the filming of an MTV vid eo. Mainly because
" Music Television has been the only source of expo
sure for the Thompson Twins in Nebraska, and
.secondly, the computerized lighting system com
bined with the modular stage, silhouette effects and
dramatic fog resulted in an extremely slick concert.
The group consisted of Tom Bailey, lead vocals,
. keyboard, guitar; Alannah Currie, vocals, percus
sion; and Joe Leeway, vocals, keyboards, percussion.
They presented their style of energetic, funky, heav
ily danceable English Pop complete with the unique
hairstyles and costumes that have been their trade- ;
mark.
Whether the crowd was cheering appearance or
the music played by the Twins was a question ans
wered when they played older songs such as lies,"
