Conference promotes older
worker as viable person
One hundred people are expected to
attend a Governor's Mini-Conference
on Older Workers. It will be held May
14 at the Cornhusker Hotel to encour
age Nebraska businesses to hire workers
over 55 years old.
The goal is to acquaint the Nebraska
businessperson with the fact that the
older worker is .a viable person who
could be a contributing factor in their
businesses," said Darrel Seng, the Ne
braska Department on Aging public
information director.
The mini-conference is sponsored by
Gob. Bob Kerrey, the Nebraska Depart
ment on Aging and the Nebraska Depart
ment of Labor's Division of Job Train
ing. It is the first mini-conference on
aging in several years, Seng said.
"We are an aging society," Seng said.
Nebraska's older workers, 55 years
and older, are the most rapidly expand
ing work force in Nebraska, he said.
"YouVe got to utilize the older workers
more and more," Seng said.
Anna Marie Buchmann, vice presi
dent of Human Resources with Bankers
Life and Casualty Company in Chi
cago, will give the Keynote address,
"One Company's Experience with Older
Workers." The address will describe
the successes and benefits Banker's
Life received by hiring older workers,
Seng said. ,
