For the first time since the 19G0s, the UNL
chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, the national honorary
society in philosophy, will meet.
The club, which meets at 4 p.m. today in the
Nebraska Union, was revived because of the efforts
of club President William Benner, a sophomore
philosophy major from Lincoln.
Benner, a reader of philosophy for more than five
years, did the necessary paperwork to reinstate
UNL as a member last December.
"I went to my advisor, Professor Robert Anderson,
and asked him how I could go about it," Benner said.
"I was determined to get one established."
Since then, Benner has worked to publicize the
club and has mailed invitations and letters to
philosophy majors.
In addition to philosophy majors and minors,
Benner said, anyone with an interest in philosophy,
including undergraduates and faculty, is welcome
to attend meetings and join the club.
Benner said he hopes 25 to 30 people will attend.
Charles Sayward, professor of philosophy, will
present a paper and discussion once a month.
"Ill really try not to make the papers really
technical," he said. "We'd like to have anyone come in
and benefit from it."
Benner said he also wants the club to hold
debates on current philosophical issues. According
to the constitution of the national chapter" of Phi
Sigma Tau, the society was founded "to popularize
philosophy among the general collegiate public. The
chapter is a means for developing and honoring
academic excellence and philosophical interest."
"It's really important to try to unite people inter
ested in philosophy and especially to create an
atmosphere for philosophy majors so they don't feel
outcast," Benner said.
In the lCGOs, the UNL chapter was active, Benner
said. He said he did not know why it ceased to exist.
Benner's interest in philosophy began when he
vyas looking for psychology books in his high school
library and found a philosophy book.
"I wasn't even aware of what the word meant " he
said.
He checked out the book and said he has been
interested ever since. He said he now owns more
than 400 philosophy books.
